    Abstract: A method of chemically modifying the poly (methyl methacrylate) (hereinafter "PMMA") clad surface of an optical fiber to introduce amino groups. N-butyl lithium in a suitable organic solvent with ethylene diamine is applied to the clad surface of the optical fiber in a substantially oxygen-free atmosphere, such as nitrogen, at approximately 10.degree. C. to 40.degree. C. for about one to two hours. A pH-sensitive dye with isothiocyanate functionality can be bounded to the modified clad surface resulting in a pH sensor based on fiber optics.

    Abstract: A vaporizer that may be used in high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) is closed. The vaporizer operates on the principle of airblast atomization. The vaporizer provides inhalation anesthesia and is adaptable to the high pressure requirements of a high frequency jet ventilator. The apparatus consists of a main tube or body which defines a passageway. Vaporization occurs by the principle of airblast atomization inside the passageway. The open end of the main body adapts to a connector of the endotracheal tube. A gas supply needle extends into and is centered within the lumen of the main body and directed along the axis of the body. The gas supply needle may be positioned horizontally and gas is jetted through it from a high-frequency jet ventilator. An inhalation anesthetic supply needle intersects the main body in general proximity to the gas supply needle. Preferably the inhalation anesthetic supply needle intersects the main body in a generally perpendicular manner to the gas supply needle.

    Abstract: A rubber compounding resin which is low fuming, nonhygroscopic and low in free resorcinol. It is made by first reacting resorcinol or other phenolic compound and styrene or other vinyl compound in a molar ratio of 1.0 mole of resorcinol to 0.25 to 1.0 mole of styrene after which formaldehyde or other aldehyde is added in the amount of 0.5 to 0.7 moles. Alternatively, the resorcinol can first be reacted with the formaldehyde after which the styrene is added. The composition resulting from the above procedure has been identified as having the structure ##STR1## wherein X is hydroxyl, hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. An intermediate in making the above compound has been identified as having the structure.

    Abstract: Low fuming and less hygroscopic rubber compounding cashew nut shell liquid, allylphenol and alkylphenol modified resorcinolic novolak resins are made by condensing (A) a resol prepared by first reacting at least one monovalent phenol having the general formula (a) ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 may be selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, an allyl, an alkyl of 1 to about 20 carbon atoms and an aryl having about 6 to about 12 carbon atoms, with methylformcel and/or furfural in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, or optionally reacting at least one monovalent phenol of the above-mentioned general formula (a) and cashew nut shell liquid, with methylformcel and/or furfural in the presence of an alkaline catalyst; and then (B) reacting the product of Step (A) with at least one of the compounds having the general formula (b) ##STR2## wherein R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 may be the same or different radicals selected from the group consisting of --H, --OH, --NH.sub.

    Abstract: A process for chemically removing surface hydroxyl groups present on an aluminum oxide supported rhodium catalyst that is suitable for use as an automotive catalyst in controlling automative exhaust emissions is disclosed. The process includes removing the hydroxyl groups from the aluminum oxide supported catalyst by silation at a temperature preferably equal to or greater than about 450 K so that the conversion of active metallic rhodium Rh.sub.x (0) to oxidized rhodium species Rh.sup.(I) cannot substantially occur by reduction of the active hydroxyl groups. The silation is carried out by exposing the aluminum oxide supported rhodium catalyst to a gas phase alkylhalosilane. Subsequent to the silation, evacuation of the alkylhalosilane treated aluminum oxide supported rhodium catalyst is effected to remove substantially all unreacted alkylhalosilane. An associated catalyst suitable for use in automotive catalytic converter technology for environmental protection is also provided.
