  • Patent number: 7668212
Abstract: An improvement in a method of controlling lasing in a semiconductor laser fabricated in a photonic crystal laser having a plurality of holes into which a birefringent material with low refractive losses and low optical loses with controllable spatial refractive index orientation has been infiltrated comprises the step of rotating the molecular orientation or changing the physical orientation of the birefringent material infiltrated into the holes of the photonic crystal laser to switch cavity modes. The liquid crystal is aligned by use of an alignable photo addressable polymer layer adjacent to the liquid crystal. The cavity modes are optically switched within the laser without any requirement of external energy to maintain the lasing state of the laser, which allows its use as a memory element.

  • Patent number: 7602792
Abstract: A reconfigurable architecture for wireless digital data and voice communications is provided for ad hoc and/or an ad hoc collection of organized networks. At least some user wireless communication units serve as relay stations for other users units, enabling any user within the range of another, participating user to gain access to the local- and wider-area networks in a multihop process. Reconfigurable hardware enables dynamic protocol “preferencing”, and easy upgrades to potential future wireless protocol standards. Power-efficient communication takes place by using multihop radio communication at the local level and high-speed point-to-point links (e.g. fiber, satellite) at the global level. Microcells within a network community are aggregated into cells by use of a local-area-network (LAN) backbone of higher speed wireless and/or wired connections. Every time a microcell connects to the wireless backbone, microcells or individual users in surrounding blocks can also connect to the network.

  • Patent number: 7599419
Abstract: A method for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication comprises the steps of generating inner and outer codes based on channel state information available at a transmitter and concatenating different inner codes with different outer codes; and using the generated concatenated inner and outer codes for wireless communication. The inner and outer codes are based on channel phase information at the transmitter or channel feedback. High-performance trellis codes or block codes for use in cellular networks are illustratively described. The space-time trellis codes are generated by set partitioning on a plurality of classes of signal designs to generate a series of inner codes, each of the series of inner codes being optimized by channel phase feedback, and concatenating each inner code with a multiple trellis coded modulated outer code to provide a complete space-time trellis code as a cophase space-time trellis code.

  • Patent number: 7591570
Abstract: A reflector for a light source, such as an LED, is provided with a shape which efficiently collects and directs energy to an illumined surface whereby almost 100% of the light is collected and distributed into a designer composite beam. The shape in one embodiment is comprised of three zones beginning with a parabolic surface of revolution at the base of the reflector, followed by a transition or straight conic zone and ending with an elliptical zone. In another embodiment the reflector shape is determined according to a transfer function which allows for arbitrary designer control of the reflected rays at each point on the reflector, which when combined with direct radiation from the source, results in a designer controlled composite beam or illumination. The device is more than 90% energy efficient and allows replacement of higher power, less energy efficient light sources with no loss in illumination intensity.
