  • Patent number: 8169957
Abstract: A data traffic responsive battery-saving approach for a wireless user equipment (UE) device such as an data packet capable cellphone incorporates flexible discontinuous transmission and reception (DTX-DRX) when in Long Term Evolution (LTE) active mode as dictated by an evolved radio access network (RAN) such as an evolved base node (eNode B). A UE device requests are made on unsynchronized random access channel (RACH). Lengthening a duration of DRX and reducing requirements for synchronization uplink transmissions results in power savings of up to 75%, as well as creating opportunities for reducing interference and for allocating additional time slots for data. This power savings is compatible with other downlink scheduling proposals, with control channel-less Voice-over-IP (VoIP), and need not target those UE devices in bad radio conditions. Legacy UE devices that can interact with the eNode B by being capable of radio resource control (RRC) signaling continue to be compatible.

  • Patent number: 8169956
Abstract: An acknowledgment (ACK) mapping automation that reduces overhead for a wireless communication systems such as UTRAN-LTE, Global System for Mobile communications (GSM: originally from Groupe Spécial Mobile), High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), or any packet-switched system, by providing a mapping of uplink (UL) location (i.e., modulation location in time, frequency and code) based upon a downlink (DL) allocations. • Patent number: 8009701
Abstract: Providing for secondary synchronization encoding utilizing a primary synchronization channel (P-SCH)-related scrambling code is described herein. Scrambled secondary synchronization codes (SSCs) can be assigned to multiple base stations of a radio access network (RAN). By way of example, PSC-based scrambling codes can be created from a plurality of M-sequences generated from a common polynomial expression. Further, an SSC codebook is provided that selects sequence pairs of a sequence matrix for generating SSCs. Selection can be based on transmission characteristics of resulting SSCs, providing reduced interference in planned, semi-planned and/or unplanned mobile deployments.

  • Patent number: 7986959
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate utilizing power control preambles with closed loop power control techniques in a wireless communication environment. An uplink grant can be transferred over a downlink (e.g., a first uplink grant after uplink inactivity), and a power control preamble can be sent over an uplink in response to the uplink grant. According to an example, transmission of the power control preamble can be explicitly scheduled and/or implicitly scheduled. The power control preamble can be transmitted at a power level determined by an access terminal utilizing an open loop power control mechanism. A base station can analyze the power control preamble and generate a power control command based thereupon to correct the power level employed by the access terminal. The access terminal can thereafter utilize the power control command to adjust the power level for uplink data transmission.

  • Patent number: 7903615
Abstract: Space division multiple access channelization is provided that includes scheduling transmission for two or more terminals and utilizing different code offsets that correspond to different sub-trees. The transmissions can be scheduled on overlapping frequency resources for overlapping time periods on different spatial resources. The pilot code offsets provide different pilot signatures so that the pilot transmissions do not overlap. The overlapping frequency resources can partially overlap or completely overlap.

  • Patent number: 7826802
Abstract: A method for estimating a size of reverse link resources provided by a base-station transceiver system (BTS), including performing respective first, second, and third measurements of first, second, and third signal strengths received at the BTS. The method also includes comparing the first measurement with the second measurement so as to determine an initial minimum signal strength, and adding at a predetermined time an aging value to the initial minimum signal strength so as to form an updated minimum signal strength. The method further includes forming a comparison between the updated minimum signal strength and the third measurement, determining from the comparison a minimum of the updated minimum signal strength and the third measurement to be a minimum received signal strength, and determining the size of the reverse link resources provided by the BTS in response to the minimum received signal strength.

  • Patent number: 7515580
Abstract: In a data communication system capable of variable rate transmission, the data rate is determined by the largest C/I measurement of the forward link signals as measured at the Access Terminal. In one embodiment, the data transmission is scheduled based on an Access Terminal initiated forward power control, which reduces forward link rate quantization loss due to excess transmit power. The Access Terminal reports to the Access Point the excess C/I estimate for the selected rate. The Access Point then reduces its transmit power by an appropriate amount when serving that Access Terminal. In another embodiment, the data transmission is scheduled based on an Access Point initiated forward power control. The Access Point varies its transmit power over time either randomly or in synchronism with neighboring Access Points in the communication system, which enables an increase in the throughput achieved by users that receive a significant amount of interference.

  • Patent number: 7489655
Abstract: Method and apparatus for predictive scheduling in a bi-directional communication system are disclosed. In a communication system (100), a control unit (218) has knowledge that a subscriber station (106) will have data to be transmitted at an ascertainable time in the future. The control unit in the communication system utilizes the knowledge to schedule the data transmission without the need for the subscriber station to transmit to request schedule for the transmission.

  • Patent number: 7480270
Abstract: A method and apparatus provide for scheduling reverse link transmission for a mobile station in a timely manner. A base station (101) may transmit on a forward link high rate channel and a forward link low rate channel to a mobile station during a common time slot. The high rate and low rate channels may be respectively the F-PDCH and the F-PDCCH. The base station may transmit a reverse link transmission scheduling information on the low rate channel. The mobile station may schedule transmission on the reverse link channel, such as R-SCH, based on the data received on the low rate channel. Since the low rate channel has only scheduling data (16 bits) and the high rate channel may have no data (null data) at all, the base station may decide to transmit the reverse link scheduling information to the mobile station very quickly on the forward link.

  • Patent number: 7430177
Abstract: Techniques to test a wireless communication link using configurable channels and rates. A W-Markov test service may be invoked to test and/or verify the performance of the downlink and/or uplink using at least one transport channel for each link. Each transport channel may be individually configured. The W-Markov test service supports generation of test data based on a defined data sequence or a pseudo-random number generator. The testing may be performed based on a particular deterministic or pseudo-random activity model. For voice call testing, a first-order Markov model may be used to model voice activity and to select the rate to use for each transmission time interval (TTI). For Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR), testing may be performed based on configurable AMR rates and silence descriptor (SID) types. The test data generation processes are synchronized between the transmitter and receiver. Bit, frame, and/or block error rates and other statistics may be collected.
