Patent number: 6155996Abstract: A disposable pneumatic chest compression vest includes an outer shell coupled with an inner bladder. Both the outer shell and inner bladder are made from materials that emit relatively low emissions when burned. Also, the outer shell is made from a flexible, non-stretch material that provides good chest compressions. The vest is easy to position about a patient and is quickly closed by adhesive strip or other closure. When no longer needed, the vest is easily removed and disposed of as medical waste.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1998Date of Patent: December 5, 2000Assignee: American Biosystems, Inc.Inventors: Nicholas P. Van Brunt, Donald J. Gagne

Patent number: 6062991Abstract: An apparatus to provide golf players calculation, communication and record keeping of golf game scores. In addition communication of information pertaining to weather, flow of play, course topology and layout, advertising, service needs, emergency medical and security, rules of play and personal messages are provided to the players throughout the golf course by the apparatus. The apparatus includes a group of mechanisms distributed throughout the golf course area of play for the purpose of transferring this information between the players and the apparatus interactively and in real time. In the preferred embodiment the mechanisms distributed around the course are statically located, use photoelectric means for their electrical power needs and transfer data by radio communication means to and from a computing mechanism. The apparatus includes a computing mechanism that performs calculation steps needed to determine the golf game scores and also manages the transfer and storage of the various communications.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1996Date of Patent: May 16, 2000Inventors: Stephen A. Moriarty, James C. Rathmanner, Nicholas P. Van Brunt

Patent number: 6036662Abstract: An oscillatory chest compression device includes an oscillatory air flow generator and a positive air flow generator. A first feedback system controls the oscillation rate of the oscillatory air flow generator, and a second feedback system controls the peak pressure created by the positive air flow generator.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1998Date of Patent: March 14, 2000Assignee: American Biosystems, Inc.Inventors: Nicholas P. Van Brunt, Donald J. Gagne

Patent number: 6030353Abstract: A multi-function pneumatic chest compression apparatus provides various functions useful in both clinical and treatment environments, including mucous mobilization, breathing assistance, exhaled gas composition, and others. An air flow generator produces preselected air flows depending on the function(s) selected. These air flows are delivered to a bladder positioned about the patient. A controller receives feedback from the bladder and manipulates a valve controlling the flow of air into the air flow generator based on the feedback and preselected operating parameters.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1998Date of Patent: February 29, 2000Assignee: American Biosystems, Inc.Inventor: Nicholas P. Van Brunt

Patent number: 5376334Abstract: A mass transfer device including a hollow fiber bundle wound on a core for radially outward flow of a first fluid. The core has an axis extending from one end to the other. The hollow fiber bundle has packing fractions which increase radially outward of the core's axis for a major portion of the bundle. Methods for making such mass transfer device.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1993Date of Patent: December 27, 1994Assignee: Avecor Cardiovascular Inc.Inventors: William S. Haworth, Robert W. Olsen, Mark S. Goodin

Patent number: 5358689Abstract: A hollow fiber blood oxygenator is provided having an plurality of enclosed, coaxial heat exchanger coils, having a common header to insure uniform temperature in the coils. An enclosed fiber bundle is concentrically positioned inside the heat exchanger coils to define a flow path around the coils and through the fiber bundle. The heat exchanger coils and the outside of the fiber bundle are tapered to provide a close fit. Gas manifolds direct gas flow to and from the hollow fibers.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1993Date of Patent: October 25, 1994Assignee: Shiley IncorporatedInventors: Kenneth A. Jones, Francis M. Servas, Timothy C. Ryan, Gregory G. Ulrich

Patent number: 5358482Abstract: Single-needle extracorporeal plasmapheresis circuit, has a filter in which plasma is separated from the blood with a membrane subject to transmembrane pressure. Two connections to the filter in the blood circuit include one connection of a line to a single needle. An interposed pump is in that line. The other connection has another line to a blood reservoir. A further line connects the plasma side of the filter membrane to a plasma collection bag. Another pump in the further line is controlled by an automatic control means suitable for maintaining the transmembrane pressure in the filter at a value within an optimum range for the entire duration of the plasmapheresis process.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1993Date of Patent: October 25, 1994Assignee: Roerig Farmaceutici Italiana S.R.L.Inventor: Ivo Panzani

Patent number: 5346621Abstract: A radial flow hollow fiber blood oxygenator is provided. The oxygenator includes a hollow fiber bundle within an oxygenator chamber defined by a hollow core around which the hollow fibers are wound and an outer housing. A gas entry port is coupled to the interior of the fibers adjacent one end of the bundle and a gas outlet is coupled to the interior of the fibers at the opposite end of the bundle. A blood inlet to the core is provided adjacent one end of the bundle, and a blood outlet from the chamber is provided adjacent the same end of the bundle. The direction of blood flow through the chamber is generally radial and the oxygenator includes an inlet manifold and an outlet manifold.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1993Date of Patent: September 13, 1994Assignee: Avecor Cardiovascular, Inc.Inventors: William S. Haworth, Robert W. Olsen, Mark S. Goodin, Larry E. Fuller

Patent number: 5340364Abstract: The device for selectively drawing samples of blood from two sections of a line and for injecting drugs into the blood comprises a three-way selection element which operates in a seat provided with three connections; the ways are suitable for selectively connecting two of the connections upon manual actuation on the part of an operator. A connection is suitable for receiving a line connected to an arterial blood drawing section; another connection is connected, by means of a duct, to the base of a trap which is open at the top and is suitable for receiving a line connected to a venous blood drawing section; and the third connection comprises a one-way valve allowing flow away from the connection and is connected by means of a duct to the base of a trap which is open at the top and is shaped so as to allow the insertion of a syringe for drawing samples of blood.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1993Date of Patent: August 23, 1994Assignee: Dideco S.r.l.Inventors: Nicola Ghelli, Ivo Panzani
