  • Patent number: 5989306
Abstract: A method of making a metal slab with a non-uniform cross-sectional shape including providing a spray casting apparatus including a substrate and a plurality of spaced atomization nozzles, the nozzles having a discharge opening and introducing molten metal into the nozzles. The method then includes atomizing the molten metal as it is discharged from the nozzles through the discharge openings by subjecting the discharged molten metal to jets of an atomizing gas in order to form metal droplets for deposition onto the substrate. The deposition of the metal droplets onto the substrate is controlled in order to form the metal slab having a non-uniform cross-sectional shape. A method of making an integrally stiffened metal structure as well as metal and aluminum products made by the above methods are also provided.

  • Patent number: 5823246
Abstract: A tundish including a baffle for directing the flow of molten metal through the tundish. The caster of the invention includes a mold having a center portion and an outside edge portion for solidifying molten metal into a metal product. The caster includes a tundish having a baffle for directing the flow of the molten metal into the mold so that the molten metal solidifies in the central portion before solidifying in the outside edge portion. This way, cracking of the metal product which is solidified in the mold is resisted. An associated method of casting molten metal into a metal product in a mold of a caster is also provided.

  • Patent number: 5787968
Abstract: The side dam is movably mounted to the caster so that it can be securely sealed against the nozzle to resist molten metal in the mold from leaking between the nozzle and the side dam. An adjustment system adjusts the pressure of the side dam against the nozzle in order to insure a tight secure seal of the side dam against the nozzle while at the same time adjusting the pressure of the side dam against the nozzle so that excessive undesired frictional wear of the nozzle is avoided.

  • Patent number: 5637501
Abstract: A method of automatically testing the sensitivity of a paraffinophilic microorganism to different antimicrobial agents and concentrations thereof includes a plurality of receptacles each containing an amount of liquid medium, an antimicrobial agent to be tested and the microorganism to be tested. A paraffin containing slide is placed in each receptacle after which incubation is effected. A light scatter sensor is employed to automatically and sequentially monitor the extent of microorganism growth on the slides and the growth on each slide is employed to determine which antimicrobial agent and which concentration is effective to resist growth of the paraffinophilic microorganism. The slides are moved sequentially in operative relationship with the light scatter sensor while resisting rotational movement of the slides. Positive and negative control slides are preferably employed as is a computer in receiving and processing the results of the slide testing. Related apparatus is disclosed.
