Abstract: At least part of the heat energy contained in the exhaust gases of a diesel engine provided with turbo apparatus is recovered before leading the exhaust gases into the turbo apparatus, and at least the major part of the recovered heat energy is used for producing secondary energy to be availed of independent of the production of mechanical energy by the engine. The heat energy recovered can, with advantage, be utilized for hot water or steam production.
Abstract: A clamp for gripping an elongate member comprises a mounting block having locating structures defining a desired position for the elongate member. Primary and secondary clamping yokes are each movable relative to the mounting block between a closed position, in which the clamping yoke engages an elongate member in the desired position, and an open position. A latch retains the primary clamping yoke in the closed position, and a force-transfer arm is effective between the primary clamping yoke and the secondary clamping yoke for retaining the secondary clamping yoke in its closed position when the primary clamping yoke is in its closed position.

Abstract: Upper blade holder intended for shear cutting of materials that run in a plane by means of a revolving pair of blades, wherein the toe-in angle of the upper blade can be set by means of a control prism. The upper blade holder comprises an upper blade journalling supported from both sides of the blade, which said journalling can be replaced without tools. The upper blade holder further comprises a protective cover of the upper blade, which said cover can be replaced without tools. This blade cover, together with the frame of the upper blade holder, encloses the upper blade and the lowering arms for the upper blade journalling. Moreover, the upper blade journalling comprises an actuator, by means of which the blade is displaced to the cutting position.
Abstract: A weighing device includes a housing disposed on an upper end of a post, a displayer disposed on the housing, a piezoelectric element disposed in the housing and having one end located above the opening of the housing, an air bag disposed on a base, a tube coupled to the post and connected to the air bag, and an expandable member disposed on an upper end of the tube for pushing the piezoelectric element when an object is put on the air bag. A signal corresponding to the weight of the object is generated and displayed on the displayer.
Abstract: A drive mechanism has two parallel shafts (2,3) provided with overlapping circumferentially-extending spiral teeth (4,5) of the same hand. The shape and positioning of the teeth is such that when one of the shafts is rotated, the steep flank surfaces (7,9) of its teeth engage the steep flank surfaces (9,7) of the teeth of the other shaft and force it to rotate in the same direction. Unidirectional drive may be obtained by providing each tooth with a gently sloping flank surface (8,10) on one side. The engagement of the gently sloping flank surfaces prevents rotation of the shafts if the driving torque is reversed.
Abstract: A driveline is provided for vehicles with two or more driving wheels in which power is carried between the transmission and each wheel through a parallel shaft differential with two internal gear pairs. A traction balance, connecting the differentials, counterbalances reactive torque. Relative wheel traction is varied by change gears within the traction balance or by control torque applied to traction balance components.
Abstract: Apparatus for testing multiple optical fibers comprises a light source, a light detector, a first set of adapter fibers, and a second set of adapter fibers corresponding on a one-to-one basis with the first set of adapter fibers. A first end of each fiber of the first set is held in a first fiber holding structure, and a first translation mechanism is provided for translating the first fiber holding structure relative to the light source so as to bring the first end of any selected one of the first set of adapter fibers into optically coupled relationship with the light source. A first end of each fiber of the second set is held in a second fiber holding structure, and a second translation mechanism is provided for translating the second fiber holding structure relative to the detector to bring the first end of any selected one of the second set of adapter fibers into optically coupled relationship with the light detector.

Abstract: A machine tool comprises a support structure having first and second opposite ends spaced apart along an axis, a drive assembly mounted on the support structure at the first end thereof, the drive assembly comprising at least one drive motor, and an output drive shaft coupled drivingly to the drive motor. The machine tool also comprises a machining head mounted on the support structure at the second end thereof, a tool support member mounted on the machining head and movable relative thereto, and a transmission shaft coupling the output drive shaft to the tool support member to effect movement of the tool support member. The transmission shaft extends parallel to the axis of the support structure over at least a substantial part of the distance of the first end of the support structure from the second end thereof.
Abstract: A microfilter (4) for fitting into a filter-box of an infants incubator comprises a pad (22) of non-woven filtering material enclosed in an envelope (21) of water-repellent cohesive and non-woven material which is highly permeable to air and oxygen. The envelope prevents the escape of fibrous particles from the pad and has one side colored differently from the other to reduce the risk of being replaced back-to-front in the filter-box. The envelope may be placed in a similar envelope. It may also have one face of multilayer construction with the layers individually removable so that they can be discarded when dirty.
Abstract: A calender comprises at least one pair of rolls through which a web to be calendered runs. One roll in each pair of rolls is a hard roll which is a heated metal roll, and the other roll in each pair of rolls is a roll provided with a resilient coating. The face of the roll with the resilient coating is also heated to a high temperature, advantageously to the same temperature as the heated metal roll.
Abstract: A wall or a sea wall is formed by a number of female blocks and a number of male blocks which can be coupled together and which are parallelepiped. Each female block has a recess formed in the middle portion of the upper surface and in the lower surface so that a pair of flanges are formed on each side of each of the recesses. Each male block has a protrusion formed on each corner area. Two adjacent protrusions of two male blocks can be received in the recess of the female block so that the male blocks and the female blocks can be stably coupled together.
Abstract: A floor vibration-damping apparatus damps a horizontal vibration of a floor based on an earthquake or the like. This apparatus comprises a movable supporting portion for supporting a floor with being free to move horizontally, and a damper working portion made by a combination of a viscous damper fixed to a restricted position of the floor and a plurality of spring mechanisms positioned radiately with respect to the restricted position.
Abstract: The present invention constitutes a portable neubulizer capable of producing a finely divided aerosol having uniformly sized droplets. The nebulizer includes a source of fluid such as a capillary tube coupled to a fluid reservoir to which a high voltage is applied in order to generate the aerosol by electrical atomization. The nebulizer further includes a piezoelectric crystal and a mechanism for deforming the crystal so as to generate the required voltage. By using electrical atomization to generate the aerosol and by piezoelectrically generating the voltage required for atomization, a nebulizer is provided which may be of small size so as to be suitable for hand held operations yet is capable of producing measured amounts of finely divided aerosols which are substantially monodispersed.
Abstract: A video effects generator consists of two major components: an electronic video switch and a waveform generator. The switch can give either sharp or soft edges, fade in or out or fade between the two inputs. This switch is driven by a waveform generator to provide switching at a line rate, field rate or both. Effects result when two video sources are alternately selected within the time of one field.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for fitting aircraft having manually operated escape slide girt bars with a mechanism that automatically engages the girt bar in a floor mounted bracket as the entry door is latched, releases the girt bar from the floor bracket when a foot pedal is depressed as the door is unlatched in non-emergency circumstances, and releases the girt bar from the door when the door is opened in emergency situations for deploying an escape slide. Support arms having spring loaded tongues on their remote ends are connected to the girt bar, while brackets in the door each receive one of the spring loaded tongues and hold the same in tongue retaining fittings. The tongue retaining fittings normally push the girt bar out of the floor brackets as the door is unlatched prior to opening and are provided with hinge tab stops to engage support arm hinge tabs on the girt bar support arm to lift the girt bar off of the floor as the door is unlatched prior to opening with the foot pedal depressed.
Abstract: A portable machine tool includes a bed and a cantilevered ram mounted for movement in a longitudinal direction along the ways thereof. A dovetail slide on a side of the ram movably supports a rotatable spindle unit capable of machining in the transverse direction completely crossways of the bed.
Abstract: A plasma source incorporates a furnace as a hollow anode, while a coaxial cathode is disposed therewithin. The source is located in a housing provided with an ionizable gas such that a glow discharge is produced between anode and cathode. Radiation or ionic emission from the glow discharge characterizes a sample placed within the furnace and heated to elevated temperatures.
