  • Patent number: 5556341
Abstract: A billiard rack wherein balls are compressed towards the center of the rack from all sides of the rack simultaneously. The billiard ball rack has a retractable actuator that activates packing bars to compress the balls, and resets the packing bars to their original position after compression. The packing bars have an angled edge for seating the balls into the table surface when the retractable actuator is actuated. Additionally, a method of compacting balls by urging the balls from at least three sides to the center of a frame.

  • Patent number: 5543329
Abstract: A multi-purpose on-line or field-portable system and method for monitoring the presence and concentration of selected antigen-antibody reactions singly or in combination that result from the presence of specific microorganisms or free antigens present or suspended in aqueous solutions, during a given time period. The detection system comprises a detection column and two sensors mounted around the J-shaped detection column. Each sensor consists of an electromagnetic radiation source and an appropriate detector for the electromagnetic radiation. The reacted analyte tends to accumulate at the sensor located in the curve of the J-shaped detection column. The lower sensor continually nulls against the upper sensor to subtract any optical effects due to non-reactants in the aqueous process or environmental stream. The response from the detector sensors drive an electric circuit, which provides an output signal.

  • Patent number: 5497630
Abstract: The disclosure is directed to an apparatus and method to increase the coefficient of performance (COP) of hydride heat pump systems to compete with the performance of conventional vapor compression and absorption refrigeration systems. The disclosure is particularly directed to hydrides with van't Hoff curves that cross, whereby the regeneration of the refrigerant hydride occurs at a temperature above the crossing, thereby allowing for a major fraction of the energy required for the regeneration to be supplied by the heat of absorption of the refrigerant. Additionally, the COP can be increased by selection of hydrides, and the kinetics of the system can be improved by the use of heat pipes and phase change materials.

  • Patent number: 5437509
Abstract: The disclosure is directed to a bearing and seal assembly apparatus for a endless chain drive for trenchers. The disclosure is particularly directed to the use of such an apparatus in trenchers used in rock or hard packed soils. The apparatus of the present invention uses bearing and seal assemblies that prolong the useful life of the gear box, the drive assembly and ultimately the trencher as a whole.

  • Patent number: 5432474
Abstract: An improved method and circuitry for processing high-impedance (current mode) input signals for use in translinear and other mode circuits in a manner that avoids the signal dependent bandwidth variations that occur in the prior art. A non-linear feedback structure using a transconductance gain element is employed to extend the bandwidth and/or suppress bandwidth variations encountered in the prior art. One application of this invention is the extension of Gilbert amplifier topologies, with their attendant normalization and integrated circuit implementation advantages, for operation with very low input signal levels to high bandwidth applications. A further extension in this invention allow this transconductance to be electrically adjusted to allow active bandwidth control or to compensate for signal sources with different input capacitances. The invention is particularly suitable for use as a preamplifier for pairs of sensed photodetector current signals.

  • Patent number: 5416448
Abstract: The disclosure is directed to a Lever oscillator for use in high resistance resonator applications, especially for use with quartz resonator sensors. The oscillator is designed to operate over a wide dynamic range of resonator resistance due to damping of the resonator in mediums such as liquids. An oscillator design is presented that allows both frequency and loss (R.sub.m) of the resonator to be determined over a wide dynamic range of resonator loss. The Lever oscillator uses negative feedback in a differential amplifier configuration to actively and variably divide (or leverage) the resonator impedance such that the oscillator can maintain the phase and gain of the loop over a wide range of resonator resistance.
