  • Patent number: 8176850
Abstract: A multi-piece projectile for a small arms cartridge includes a metal cup that has a bore, a plastic sheath having a through hole and a high-density core. The cup is a cylindrical metal structure having a bore. The sheath is a cylindrical end and a conical end and a through hole. The core is a cylindrical structure having conical end and a blunt end. The projectile is assembled by placing the core in the through hole of the sheath and then pressing the sheath into the bore of the cup. The assembled projectile is attached to the cartridge by crimping the cup to the orifice in the end of the cartridge casing after it is filled with the propellant. When the projectile is fired all of the components remain coupled together but break apart upon impact with a target. Because the core has a higher mass than the other components the components separate very easily, the majority of the kinetic energy remains in the core.

  • Patent number: 8155959
Abstract: Systems and methods are described that automatically control modules of dialog systems. The systems and methods include a dialog module that receives and processes utterances from a speaker and outputs data used to generate synthetic speech outputs as responses to the utterances. A controller is coupled to the dialog module, and the controller detects an abnormal output of the dialog module when the dialog module is processing in an automatic mode. The controller comprises a mode control for an agent to control the dialog module by correcting the abnormal output and transferring a corrected output to a downstream dialog module that follows, in a processing path, the dialog module. The corrected output is used in further processing the utterances.

  • Patent number: 8141143
Abstract: Methods, computer products, and systems are described for providing remote access to resources in a secure data center protected by at least one firewall. One method includes sending by an internal server within the secure data center a request to an external server outside of the secure data center to establish a secure data transport channel between the internal server and the external server. The request travels through at least one firewall protecting the secure data center and over a public network, a private network, and/or a second firewall. The internal server receives a reply to the request from the external server granting the request and confirming the establishment of the secure data transport channel.

  • Patent number: 8138409
Abstract: Embodiments of a music training and entertainment system are described that allows a user to input a selection of source music in a native format, and isolates a desired vocal or instrument component within the source music. The user selects the component of the source music against which he or she will be compared. The system suppresses the non-selected components of the source content to isolate the user-selected component. The system receives user input corresponding to the isolated component, such as a vocal track, and matches the receiver's performance to the original performance. The system then provides meaningful and entertaining feedback to allow the user to practice and improve his or her performance. In a multi-user configuration a number of users, such as a band or ensemble can provide a performance, or individual users can compete against each other to see who can obtain the highest score.

  • Patent number: 8140330
Abstract: Embodiments of a method and system for detecting repeated patterns in dialog systems are described. The system includes a dynamic time warping (DTW) based pattern comparison algorithm that is used to find the best matching parts between a correction utterance and an original utterance. Reference patterns are generated from the correction utterance by an unsupervised segmentation scheme. No significant information about the position of the repeated parts in the correction utterance is assumed, as each reference pattern is compared with the original utterance from the beginning of the utterance to the end. A pattern comparison process with DTW is executed without knowledge of fixed end-points. A recursive DTW computation is executed to find the best matching parts that are considered as the repeated parts as well as the end-points of the utterance.

  • Patent number: 8108214
Abstract: Embodiments of a dialog system that utilizes contextual information to perform recognition of proper names are described. Unlike present name recognition methods on large name lists that generally focus strictly on the static aspect of the names, embodiments of the present system take into account of the temporal, recency and context effect when names are used, and formulates new questions to further constrain the search space or grammar for recognition of the past and current utterances.

  • Patent number: 8108933
Abstract: The present invention is a system and method for detecting and preventing attacks and malware on mobile devices such as a cell phones, smartphones or PDAs, which are significantly limited in power consumption, computational power, and memory. The invention enables mobile devices to analyze network data, executable data files, and non-executable data files in order to detect and prevent both known and unknown attacks and malware over vectors that are not typically protected by desktop and server security systems. Security analysis is performed by a combination of “known good,” “known bad,” and decision components. The invention identifies known good executables and/or known characteristics of network data or data files that must be present in order for the data to be considered good. Furthermore, known good and known bad identifier databases may be stored on a server which may be queried by a mobile device.

  • Patent number: 8096852
Abstract: Polishing pads used in CMP machines are consumable components that are typically replaced after a specific number of wafers have been processed. The life of a polishing pad is optimized by controlling the rate of material removal from the polishing pad by the conditioning disk. The conditioning disk removes enough material so the polishing surface can properly process the wafers but does not remove any excess material. Preventing excess material removal extends the life of the polishing pad. During CMP processing, the controller receives data concerning the torque applied to the conditioning disk and the torque applied to the arm to sweep the conditioning disk across the polishing pad. Based upon the detected operating conditions, the system can predict the rate of material removal and adjust the forces applied to the conditioning disk so that the life of the polishing pad is optimized.

  • Patent number: 8099472
Abstract: The present invention is a system and method for creating, developing and testing cross-platform software for mobile communications devices. The invention enables mobile device software that must be highly-integrated with the operating system on which it runs to be implemented in a cross-platform manner. Security software for mobile devices is a prime beneficiary of the present invention, as a substantial proportion of its functionality is identical between different platforms yet integrated very specifically into each platform it supports. The cross-platform system includes a core platform-independent component, a platform-specific component, and an abstraction layer component, each of which may communicate with each other using a common defined API. The present invention enables the platform-independent component to be completely re-used between platforms and allows the platform-specific and abstraction components to contain minimal amounts of code on each platform.

  • Patent number: 8099109
Abstract: Embodiments of a location sharing network manager process are described. The process is executed on a server computer coupled to a plurality of mobile communication devices over a wireless network. Each mobile device is a location-aware mobile communication device. The process determines the geographic location of a mobile communication device operated by a user within an area, displays a map representation of the area around the mobile communication device on a graphical user interface of the mobile communication device, and superimposes on the map the respective locations of one or more other trusted users of mobile communication devices coupled to the mobile communication device over the network.
