  • Patent number: 6361580
Abstract: A continuous process for the production of elemental aluminum is described. Aluminum is made from aluminum oxide and a reducing gas such as a light hydrocarbon gas or other reducing gas, for example hydrogen. In the process, a feed stream of the aluminum oxide and the reducing gas is continuously fed into a reaction zone. There the aluminum oxide and reducing gas are reacted at a temperature of about 1500° C. or greater in the reaction zone to provide a continuous product stream of reaction products, which include elemental aluminum. The product stream is continuously quenching after leaving the reaction zone, and the elemental aluminum is separated from the other reaction products.

  • Patent number: 6355910
Abstract: There is provided a heating element and an arrangement of heating elements, respectively, for heating crucibles, in particular for LEC devices for growing semiconductor single crystals, with a tulip-shaped bottom heater (20) being built such that the heater legs of the main heater (40) positioned thereabove can barely be guided towards the bottom. Such arrangement of bottom and main heater enables multi-heater arrangements without having to interfere with a lateral insulation (18) which, thus, need not be cut out or pierced.

  • Patent number: 6316918
Abstract: An integrated system for comprehensive control of an electric power generation system utilizes state machine control having particularly defined control states and permitted control state transitions. In this way, accurate, dependable and safe control of the electric power generation system is provided. Several of these control states may be utilized in conjunction with a utility outage ride-through technique that compensates for a utility outage by predictably controlling the system to bring the system off-line and to bring the system back on-line when the utility returns. Furthermore, a line synchronization technique synchronizes the generated power with the power on the grid when coming back on-line. The line synchronization technique limits the rate of synchronization to permit undesired transient voltages.

  • Patent number: 6298206
Abstract: It is an object of the invention that development quality is improved by increasing the amount of charge during the transportation of toner by a toner holding member and decreasing the amount of charge during development for rendering an electrostatic latent image visible. A one-component non-magnetic toner is supplied from a toner supplying unit to the toner holding member such that the toner is electrostatically attracted to adhere to the toner holding member with a large amount of charge. The charge of the toner under transportation is reduced by charge adjusting means such as a conductive roller supplied with a potential from a frictional charging member or a voltage source, whereby the amount of development or the amount of toner adhering to an electrostatic latent image is increased and development quality is improved.

  • Patent number: 6297875
Abstract: A polarizing plate and a double refracting plate, which are allowed to rotate around an optic axis, are provided to the light-exit side of a liquid crystal layer. The double refracting plate splits incident light into an ordinary ray which travels along a straight optic axis and an extraordinary ray which travels along a refracted optic axis, and supplies the same to a printing paper. The double refracting plate is laminated to the polarizing plate in such a manner that the splitting direction of the former matches with the polarizing plate of the latter, thereby allowing only the extraordinary ray to exit from the double refracting plate. By rotating the two plates together as one body by, for example, 90 degrees around the optic axis and exposing the printing paper each time, resolution attained without displacing the liquid crystal layer or printing paper with respect to the other is nearly as high as the one obtained by displacing the liquid crystal layer or printing paper.

  • Patent number: 6288992
Abstract: An optical reproducing device according to the present invention detects mean amplitude values of short marks and long marks, which are recorded marks for reproducing power control, by means of a short mark level detecting circuit and a long mark level detecting circuit. Then a differential amplifier compares a ratio between these two mean amplitude values with a standard value, and outputs the result of this comparison. Thereafter, a reproducing power control circuit controls reproducing power of a semiconductor laser such that the absolute value of this comparison result is reduced. Since mean values of the amplitude values of the short marks and long marks are detected, the detection results are very accurate, and the precision of control of reproducing power can be greatly improved.

  • Patent number: 6278202
Abstract: To reduce a power loss and elongate the service life of a battery in a power supply circuit for a widely variable power-consuming load. In a device with a dry battery and a rechargeable battery, the rechargeable battery supplies the power while its output voltage is higher than a 3.4V-voltage increased voltage by a voltage increasing circuit. When the output voltage of the rechargeable battery decreases lower than 3.4V, the voltage increasing circuit operates and the dry battery works as a power supply. The power voltage increased by the voltage increasing circuit through a choke coil is fed to respective voltage decreasing circuits. The current is also fed to recharge the rechargeable battery when the output voltage of the choke coil is higher than the output voltage of the rechargeable battery. When the load is increased by the operation of a pickup, the power stored in the rechargeable battery together with the power from the dry battery after increased to 3.

  • Patent number: 6275337
Abstract: Featured is a method and device that minimize the effects of reflections from a transparent surface while viewing an object or target area through such reflective surface and which accomplishes this without affecting the crucially important accuracy of showing where a projectile from a weapon should impact a target. A method for viewing an object from a first side of a transparent medium, the first side being a reflective surface, when the object is located on an opposite side of the transparent medium, includes the steps of providing a telescopic viewing mechanism, mounting a filter at an exit aperture of the viewing mechanism and passing light from the object through the viewing mechanism and through the filter. The filter is configured to significantly attenuate light being reflected from the first side and in a particular embodiment is a polarizing filter.

  • Patent number: 6258705
Abstract: A method is proposed for forming circuit probing (CP) contact points on fine pitch peripheral bond pads (PBP) on a flip chip for the purpose of facilitating peripheral circuit probing of the internal circuitry of the flip chip. The proposed method is characterized in the forming of a dual-layer NiV/Cu metallization structure, rather than a triple-layer Al/NiV/Cu metallization structure, over each aluminum-based PBP, which includes a bottom layer of nickel-vanadium (NiV) deposited over the aluminum-based PBP and an upper layer of copper (Cu) deposited over the nickel-vanadium layer. When low-resolution photolithographic and etching equipment is used for photoresist mask definition for selective removal of the NiV/Cu metallization structure, the resulted photoresist masking can be misaligned to the PBP.
