  • Patent number: 5000492
Abstract: A connection for connecting an end hub (22) of a valve (10) to the flange (32) of an associated conduit (26). A bolting ring (36) has a threaded end portion (64) adjacent the valve (10), and a cylindrical smooth end portion (68) remote from the valve (10) extending radially inwardly from the threaded end portion (64). A shoulder (70) between the smooth portion (68) of the ring (36) and the threaded portion (64) acts as a stop to accurately position the bolting ring (36) onto the hub (22). Upon connection of the assembled valve structure to adjacent conduits (26), tensioning of the threaded studs (42) results in torque loads exerted by the smooth surface (68) on the locking ring (36) against the smooth surface (60) on the hub (22) for transmitting loads to the hub (22) as shown particularly in FIG. 5.

  • Patent number: 4993876
Abstract: The method and apparatus for forming an encapsulation or encasement about a structural member that is particularly well suited for use in a marine environment is disclosed. A two component polymer system for protective and repair encapsulation is pumpable in two separate streams to the location of the structural member to be encapsulated. The two reactive components are combined in a static mixer immediately prior to being injected within the surrounding translucent jacket. By combining the reactive components immediately prior to use, premature set up is avoided and the resulting grout may be directed to flow upwardly in the jacket for enhancing final properties. By suitable coloring of the components, visual monitoring of the final mxing and distribution in the translucent form or jacket of the encapsulation material may be monitored. A field test for determining bond strength of the encapsulation polymer to the structural member is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4991563
Abstract: An apparatus and method for heating hollow bolts (20) mounted in aligned openings (18) of a pair of members (10,12) to be connected together. A conduit (42) supported by a cylindrical body (40) from the end (29) of the bolt (20) is inserted within the bore (34) of the bolt (20). A fired stream of heated fluid from a gas torch (90) flows through the conduit (42) thereby to heat the bolt (20) for providing sufficient elongation for predetermined tightening or loosening of the associated nut (30). One embodiment (FIG. 1) utilizes a hollow bolt having a blind end central bore (34). Another embodiment (FIG. 3) utilizes a hollow bolt (26A) having a central bore (34A) extending through the entire length of the bolt (26A).

  • Patent number: 4989680
Abstract: A rotary drill bit (10) has three roller cutters (20A, 20B and 29C) mounted thereon for rotation with a plurality of cutting elements (26) arranged in concentric annular rows (28A, 28B, 28C, 28D) thereon. A high velocity drilling fluid is discharged from nozzle orifices (40, 42, 52) and the orifices are sized and positioned so that more hydraulic energy is directed against the cutting elements (26) in the gage row (28D) than against the cutting elements (26) in the remaining rows (28A, 28B, 28C). The drilling fluid impinges the cutting elements (26) on the leading side of the roller cutters (20A, 20B, 20C) immediately prior to engagement of the cutting elements (26) with the bore hole bottom (30) and then sequentially strikes the bore hole bottom formation at or closely adjacent the juncture (35) of the horizontal bottom portion (32) with the vertical side portion (34).

  • Patent number: 4984810
Abstract: A treadmill is disclosed having a belt system carried by a platform structure. The platform structure is pivotally mounted at its rear end to a base structure. The platform is supported at its forward end by a shock absorber/spring system which provides a damped resilient response of the belt and platform when a person's foot lands during running or walking. Carrying the belt system by the platform structure enables the endless belt of the belt system to be maintained closely above the platform even when a runner's foot lands on it with heavy impact. The support of the platform immediately below the belt eliminates lateral slack in the belt which could possibly result in injury to a walker or runner due to an uneven landing surface.

  • Patent number: 4972323
Abstract: Disclosed is a method making use of a video camera, a programmed computer and a numerically-controlled machine-tool with three displacement axes. Particular transitions of the gray levels of the digitized output signal of the camera are sought. Two contiguous binary signals thus produced define a primitive segment of a line to be engraved. The directing parameters of the line segments, normalized in accordance with the displacement step of the machine, are produced and the successions of digital signals controlling the horizontal movement of the machine are deduced therefrom. The engraving depth control signals are renewed with each new engraving pass.Application to the customized production of jewelry and object-words.
