Patent number: 4648972Abstract: The present invention relates to a distributor for distributing a liquid in an exchange column. The distributor comprises at least one predistributor means positioned to receive a liquid feed and a plurality of distributor means having substantially straight longitudinal side walls and open top portions. The interior and exterior of the longitudinal side walls of the predistributor means are covered with a wettable, open-pore material. In operation the liquid feed flows from the predistributor means into the interior of the distributor means, through the open-pore material, exiting this open-pore material on the exterior of the distributor means. In this manner an improved, even distribution of the liquid feed within the exchange column is obtained.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1984Date of Patent: March 10, 1987Assignee: Paul Rauschert GmbH & Co. Patent number: 4613363Abstract: The present invention relates to the use of self-reducing compacts as a feed material for a submerged electric arc furnace. The compacts are comprised of finely-divided carbon-reducible oxide materials, such as, the oxides of silicon, iron, manganese, chromium or nickel, or mixtures thereof, and a carbonaceous source material. The compacts may also contain a slag-forming additive. The particle size of the components is less than about 0.2 mm. The particles are mixed in appropriate weight ratios to yield the desired product, for example, silicon, iron, or iron alloy. Water is incorporated into the mixture by alternately stirring and pressing to produce densified agglomerates. Sufficient water is added that the subsequent compaction step squeezes out at least about 1% of the incorporated water. The agglomerates are compacted, suitably by means of a double rolls, which exert a maximum momentary pressure of from about 300 to about 4000 kg per linear cm of roll width, to form a compacted product.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1985Date of Patent: September 23, 1986Inventor: Fritz O. Patent number: 4613238Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for measuring the temperature in an ultra small area by determining the electrical resistance, or changes in electrical resistance in an electrical circuit. The system utilizes a temperature sensory element comprised of a microcapillary tube containing an ionic liquid and an electrical circuit capable of measuring the electrical resistance, or the changes in the electrical resistance, of the liquid. The temperature sensory element is of a size useful to measure the temperature in ultra small areas. The temperature sensory element ranges up to about 2.0 microns in outside diameter, and more preferably has an outside diameter between about 0.1 and about 1.0 micron, and most preferably between about 0.5 and about 1.5 micron. Minute changes in the electrical resistance of the liquid within the temperature sensory element reflect minute temperature changes in the immediate area of the temperature sensory element.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1985Date of Patent: September 23, 1986Assignee: The Research Foundation of State University of New YorkInventor: Frederick Sachs

Patent number: 4606747Abstract: Described is a process for the contact-less removal of material from the surface of an article of brittle material, in particular glass, by means of a laser beam. So that material can be removed, with sharp edges, without splintering, and also in order to permit non-sharp surfaces, the invention provides that the laser beam (1) is passed through at least one at least partially absorbent matrix (7) and split into a plurality of individual beams (1'). By that means, the energy available in the laser beam is split up, in the beam cross-section, and the individual beams can be adapted to a desired removal effect. The apparatus for carrying out the process is characterized in that the matrix (7) has straight and/or curved fields (8, 9) with preferably a high absorption capability in respect of laser beams.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1985Date of Patent: August 19, 1986Assignee: Schott-Zwiesel-Glaswerke AGInventor: Hans-Joachim Steinhoff

Patent number: 4547204Abstract: The invention provides resin compositions which are particularly suitable for utilization in electron cured coated abrasives. The resin systems of the instant invention have been devised to be particularly suitable for the backing fill of a cloth which is to form the base of a coated abrasive. The formation of a treated base cloth for coated abrasive formation by electron beam curing resins creates a product which in addition to being suitable for immediate formation into a coated abrasive by application of grain is further a product which may be stored for later use or sold to other parties that have need for a waterproof stretch-resistant cloth or that make coated abrasives without doing cloth finishing. The invention also encompasses the formation of electron curing resin systems which are particularly desirable for the make coat and size coat utilized in forming coated abrasives.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 1984Date of Patent: October 15, 1985Assignee: Carborundum Abrasives CompanyInventor: Lawrence D.
