  • Patent number: 4930376
Abstract: A system for pressurizing a friction element of an automatic transmission supplied concurrently from two hydraulic passages through a shuttle valve where the two sources of supply pressure are combined. A control valve proeduces regulated output pressure by balancing control feedback pressure against a spring force without venting any portion of the system. The shuttle valve includes a shuttle ball for sealing ports connected to both supply sources and maintains an open connection between the direct clutch and a pocket in which the shuttle ball is retained. AN accumulator includes a plunger separating first and second volumes. One volume expands as hydraulic fluid at regulated output pressure exits the control valve. The volume expands at a regulated time rate controlled by the magnitude of TVLM control pressure, a compression spring force and the flow rate through an orifice of predetermined size.

  • Patent number: 4928545
Abstract: A transmission control selector arm transmits movement of a gear shift lever to the manual valve of an automatic transmission through a shift mechanism that includes a tube, rotatably mounted and supported against displacement and having one end pivotably supporting the gear shift lever and a second end pivotably supporting the transmission control selector lever. A plunger is supported within the tube for axial displacement and defines, near one axial end, a hole, into which the gear shift lever is retained for rotation about the pivoted support on the tube. The selector lever is supported for movement about a second pivotal joint on the tube. A control selector position insert mounted on the tube defines multiple detent surfaces corresponding to the various positions among which the gear selector lever can be moved. These detent surfaces are located adjacent the selector lever.

  • Patent number: 4928227
Abstract: A multiple forward speed automatic transmission produces its lowest forward speed ratio when a hydraulic clutch and hydraulic brake are disengaged and a one-way clutch connects a ring gear to the transmission casing. Second forward speed ratio results when the hydraulic clutch is engaged to connect the ring gear to the planetary carrier of a second gear set. Reverse drive and regenerative operation result when an hydraulic brake fixes the planetary and the direction of power flow is reversed. Various sensors produce signals representing the position of the gear selector lever operated manually by the vehicle operator, the speed of the power source, the state of the ignition key, and the rate of release of an accelerator pedal. A control algorithm produces input data representing a commanded upshift, a commanded downshift and a torque command and various constant torque signals. A microprocessor processes the input and produces a response to them in accordance with the execution of a control algorithm.

  • Patent number: 4914984
Abstract: A control valve arrangement for a continually variable transmission includes a first valve for regulating pressure in a primary servo for the gear ratio of the transmission and a second valve for regulating pressure in a secondary servo controlling tension of the drivebelt. These valves are acted upon by a throttle shaft as a function of output torque of the engine. A modulating device varies pressure in the secondary servo as a function of the gear ratio and of engine torque. The modulating device comprises a lever having one end acted upon by a cam disk as a function of the engine torque and second end acted upon by a valve element of the second regulating valve. The second lever is extended radially outward from a pivot. A sensor arm acts as a function of the gear ratio on one end of the second lever, whose other end is rotatably pinned to the first lever.

  • Patent number: 4907937
Abstract: The end of a robot arm includes two links, a first or inner link supported rotatably about a central axis and an end link at which a tool is carried. Located between the links are a rod and a tube whose longitudinal axes are concentric. Each of four gimbal rings is used as a member of a universal joint that connects the links, the rod and the tube. The links are connected by two universal joints in series, and the rod connects these joints. The links are also connected by two other universal joints in series and the tube connects this second pair of joints. The first and second pairs of universal joints connected in series are connected to one another in parallel. Gimbal rings rotatably supported on the tube and on the links for angular movement about yaw axis provide rotational support for the links and the connecting rod about the pitch axis. Actuating rods connected to the inner set of gimbal rings produce articulation of the wrist about these axis when the rods are actuated.

  • Patent number: 4889003
Abstract: A manually operated automotive transmission has a cluster gear on which several forward drive input gears and the reverse drive input gear are formed integrally. An auxiliary coutershaft carries a fifth speed gear continuously engaged with a gear formed on the input shaft. A reverse idler slides on a stub shaft into engagement with a reverse pinion on the input shaft and a reverse output gear. The fifth gear synchronizer sleeve is moved away from the fifth gear when reverse gear is selected because the fifth gear selector position is in the same plane as the reverse drive position. A gearset brake is actuated by movement of the synchronizer sleeve to prevent rotation of the fifth speed gear relative to the input shaft during the initial movement of the selector shaft toward the reverse drive position. The brake mechanism is released as the selector shaft is moved fully to the reverse drive position.

  • Patent number: 4884471
Abstract: A multiple speed transmission for an automotive vehicle includes three simple planetary gear units and clutches and brakes applied and released selectively to produce four forward speed ratios and reverse drive. Two of the gears units produce three of the four drive torque delivery paths and the reverse drive torque delivery path. • Patent number: 4876923
Abstract: A torque converter lockup clutch is pressurized from a source of regulated line pressure through a lockup clutch control valve, which directs pressure to either of two passages to apply and release the clutch. The control valve is supplied with control pressure from a solenoid-operated valve that produces high and low fluid pressure states corresponding to commands to engage and release the lockup clutch. A second control pressure, opposing the effect of the solenoid-operated control pressure, is applied to the control valve when the vehicle operator manually selects certain gear ratios, principally the lowest forward and reverse gear ratios. A line pressure regulator valve produces line pressure whose magnitude is proportional to the magnitude of a control pressure representing a commanded engine torque output.
