Patent number: 4804376Abstract: A reflux indicating device for a urine collection bag which has a chamber for collecting urine from a patient. A receiving conduit is in communication with the drain tube on a catheter to empty urine into the chamber. An annular channel is secured into the upper distal most end of the receiving conduit. If the bag is laid on one of its sides, urine will get trapped in the channel and alert medical personnel of possible retrograde contamination of the drain tube and catheter by bacteria contained within any urine already in the chamber.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 1987Date of Patent: February 14, 1989Assignee: The Kendall CompanyInventor: Terry Layton

Patent number: 4795451Abstract: A disposable absorbent pad for use as a baby diaper or an adult incontinent brief wherein the backing sheet of the diaper has a pair of continuous bands of adhesive arranged in a stepped generally longitudinal configuration thereon. An elastic band is disposed over the mid-portion of the adhesive being stepped to the side, out of contact with the elastic. When the pads are cut in the assembly process, only that portion of elastic in contact with the adhesive causes the pad to gather. The remaining end portions of the adhesive bands are secured to the intermediate layer of absorbent fluff material, helping it remain in place, and act as a fluid barrier on the sides of the absorbent pad.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1986Date of Patent: January 3, 1989Assignee: The Kendall CompanyInventor: Mary E. Patent number: 4787655Abstract: The invention comprises a swivel adapter for a ventilator breathing system serving an incapacitated patient. The swivel adapter utilizes a pair of corrugated hoses which mate with a pair of arms which are permitted to swivel on the body of the adapter. A ribbed collar is disposed on the body of the adapter and receives an endo-tracheal tube inserted within the trachea of the patient. A locking means secures the branches of the body to the swivelable arms of the adapter, and a circumferential sealing means, in the form of an `o`-ring is disposed between the branch and its receiving orifice in its respective arm, to permit secure swiveling thereof, while preventing leakage of any gases therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1986Date of Patent: November 29, 1988Assignee: The Kendall CompanyInventors: James R. Patent number: 4765327Abstract: The present invention comprises a cartridge humidifier assembly having a heating means for humidifying a gas supplied from a source and delivered to a patient. The cartridge humidifier has a cap which defines a chamber with a column. The cap includes a port which receives the gas from a ventilator and a port which permits the discharge of heated humidified gas to the patient. The cap also has a single air-vent port for the venting of air with the water supply from the chamber of cartridge assembly. Water is supplied to the bottom of the cartridge assembly from a one-way conduit in communication with the bottom of the water supply container. A float rises to close off the air-vent when the cartridge assembly is full. The float lowers itself, unblocking the vent to the water bottle supply from the cartridge assembly, as the water level in the cartridge is used up in the humidification process. The float air-vent control is thus automatic, preventing possible overflow or lack of flow of water in the system.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1986Date of Patent: August 23, 1988Assignee: Respiratory Care, Inc.Inventor: Norman Shim

Patent number: 4764242Abstract: A machine for applying continuous bands of adhesive generally longitudinally along an absorbent pad, which pad may comprise a diaper or an adult incontinent brief. The machine includes a pair of adhesive ejecting nozzles which direct adhesive onto the backing sheet of the pad as the sheet is moved therepast. The nozzles are intermittently directed to their respective sides, under control of a counting apparatus, so as to effectuate a pair of non-linear bands of adhesive onto the sheet. A pair of elastic bands are guided onto the sheet so as to attach themselves only in intermediate portions of the adhesive bands on the backing sheet. The nozzles are also withdrawable from the backing sheet when the sheet is not moving, so as to prevent their burn through. The nozzles movement is controlled by piston and cylinder units under solenoid regulation, which has received signals from the counting apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1986Date of Patent: August 16, 1988Assignee: The Kendall CompanyInventors: Joseph A. Patent number: 4700922Abstract: Medical equipment mounting apparatus with a plurality of pivotally connected members including a first upright member designed for snug upright support of receipt within a standard IV pole hole, or mounting bracket, of a hospital bed. The equipment is releasibly detachable from the mounting means, and the mounting apparatus itself is releasibly detachable from the bed frame to facilitate its easy use at different bed locations. The pivotal connection between the arms enables 180 degrees of movement in either of two directions between some of the arms, so that the medical equipment can be located alongside the bed frame in parallel relationship therewith. The first upright member has couplers at opposite ends of different diameters for mating receipt within pole holes of different diameters. Alternately, the effective diameter of the first member is selectively altered to fit within different sized IV pole mounting holes.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1984Date of Patent: October 20, 1987Assignee: The Kendall CompanyInventor: James R. Patent number: 4701162Abstract: A shaft and a connector with a side arm which when assembled comprise a catheter. The connector has an inflation lumen in its side arm and an axial bore through the body of the connector, the inflation lumen and the bore being in fluid communication. The bore has three annular channels therein. Two of the channels are arranged to receive adhesive through the wall of the connector, and the third channel is intermediate the other two is in fluid communication with the inflation lumen of the side arm. The shaft has a drainage lumen and an inflation lumen therein. A pair of openings to the inflation lumens, are disposed in the shaft, corresponding to two of the channels in the connector.Adhesive injected into the outer channels bonds the shaft to the connector and seals the proximalmost orifice of the inflation lumen in the shaft. The other opening provides fluid communication between the inflation lumen of the shaft and the inflation lumen of the side arm.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 1985Date of Patent: October 20, 1987Assignee: The Kendall CompanyInventor: Philip Rosenberg

Patent number: 4701167Abstract: The present invention comprises an applicator for the discharge of disinfectant from an aerosol can. The applicator provides an inner and an outer confinement means which permits the discharge of disinfectant from the aerosol can onto a relatively large area being treated. The applicator also comprises an inner confinement adapter which is disposed within the outer confinement means so as to permit a smaller portion of a patient's body to be disinfected. A finger may disposed against the inner confinement apparatus and disinfected appropriately due to the smaller size of the inner confinement means as opposed to the outer confinement means. The flow of disinfectant when the outer confinement means is utilized is not compromised because of the spaced relationship axially between the two confinement rims.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1985Date of Patent: October 20, 1987Assignee: The Kendall CompanyInventor: William J.
