    Abstract: A reusable shipping container assembly for protecting a plurality of articles during shipping is disclosed. The container assembly includes a semi-rigid rectangular corrugated box having a top wall, a bottom wall and side walls. Within the corrugated box are a plurality of interlocking cushioned "clamps;" one such clamp per article to be shipped. Each interlocking cushioned clamp contains a convoluted foam set consisting of a pair of rectangular-shaped interlocking convoluted foam cushions. Each pair of convoluted foam cushions holds one of the articles to be shipped. Completing the cushioned clamp and enclosing the convoluted foam cushions is a cushioned sleeve having a rectangular cross section. The cushioned sleeve is adapted to snugly enclose the convoluted foam cushions on four sides and to maintain the interlocking convoluted foam cushions in place during shipping.

    Abstract: A pair of equipment brackets is disclosed which facilitates mounting electrical equipment and the like in an equipment rack or cabinet. Each bracket attaches to the side panels of the electrical equipment and a portion of the bracket extends outward from the equipment to overlap the side rails of the equipment rack/cabinet. The overlapping portion of each bracket contains a plurality of bore holes arranged in a pattern to match the spacing of the tapped bores in the side rails. The overlapping portion of each bracket also contains a semi-circular slot located at the bottom edge of the bracket. The purpose of the slot in each bracket is to receive a mounting screw partially inserted into the equipment rack. When two such screws are partially inserted into the equipment rack, one on each side at the desired location for mounting the electrical equipment, the overlapping portion of each bracket can be slid down the rack so that the slots receive the screw shaft.

    Abstract: An electro-magnetically shielded metallic enclosure is provided with a novel hinge structure. The enclosure has a plurality of side panels and at least one access door hinged to one of the side panels by a plurality of shielded hinges. Each such hinge has three principal elements: a metallic tab, an elongated slot for receiving and supporting the metallic tab, and a raised metal arch bridging the central portion of the elongated slot. The metallic tab is integrally formed on one edge of the access door and is designed to slide into an elongated slot located in an adjacent side panel to provide support for pivoting the metallic tab and the connected door in a hinged relationship. To prevent EMR from otherwise leaking through the elongated slot, a raised metal arch is provided on the interior of the enclosure bridging the central portion of the slot.

    Abstract: A method for transmitting data packets, grouped as data octets, over a LAN having a central hub linked to each of a plurality of network nodes via a physical medium consisting of four pairs of unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable. The transmission method sequentially divides the data into data quintets. The quintets are then arranged into blocks of data quintets and sequentially distributed into four individual serial code streams. The four serial code streams are sequentially scrambled to produce four streams of randomized quintets. The randomized data streams are sequentially block encoded into 6-bit symbol data which are then transmitted using NRZ modulation across the network by transmitting each data stream over one of said pairs of cable.

The method includes the steps of creating several files, one with a fixed name and at least one other file having a random name. Saving the head, cylinder and sector information for each of the files in the corresponding file along with use count information, saving the names of all the files in the first file with the fixed name, and encrypting all the files. This program locking method permits the distribution of trial copies of software programs and limits the risk that the program will be copied or used more than the permitted number of times.

    Abstract: A color field 1 detector includes analog and digital processor sections, wherein the analog processor section receives a video signal input and provides the digital signals necessary to drive the digital processor section. A timing generator receives a free-running reference clock and supplies an internal reference signal of subcarrier frequency starting at the falling edge of composite sync. A burst phase comparator compares the incoming color burst phase to the internal reference signal phase and generates logic signals indicative of the phase relationships therebetween to thus indicate whether the color burst is in phase, 180.degree. out of phase, or if any phase error exists. A state machine receives the logic signals and detects the sequence of occurrence of the states of the color burst relative to the internal reference signal. The sequence is indicative of the subcarrier-to-composite sync phase of the video signal input for the particular color television standard.

The second sub-beam combines with the PC beam and the combined beams mix at the cathode of a photodetector thereby producing a heterodyne frequency proportional to the temperature T.sub.s. Converts the heterodyne frequency into a temperature value yields the desired unknown T.sub.s.

By directing the pulsed laser beam into the water, it causes a return phase-conjugate beam to emanate therefrom. The return phase-conjugate beam and the pulsed laser beam are separated, and the phase-conjugate beam and the cw beam are mixed together thereby producing a heterodyne frequency proportional to the temperature T.sub.s. By converting the heterodyne frequency into a temperature value, yields the desired unknown T.sub.s.

    Abstract: A magnetic transducer of the erasing type, in which the coil is pre-wound to achieve greater manufacturing economy; and in which for the same reason, and also for electromagnetic operating efficiency, the core is laminated with each lamination being of one-piece fabrication. However, the single transducing gap in the core is too small to permit threading the coil thereon. Therefore, the core is formed of flexible material so that the gap can be enlarged to accept the coil during assembly. Alternatively, the core can be fabricated initially with an enlarged gap, and the flexible core is then bent to provide a desired gap length after the coil is assembled thereon. A variational form of the invention has two erase gaps and one record-play gap with a separate coil therefor.

    Abstract: A method of providing secure tactical communications between a submerged submarine and an airborne platform using a pulse-modulated blue-green laser beam. During an initial acquisition mode, the airborne transceiver sends out a downlink laser beam to the ocean surface and below using a predetermined IFF code to identify the transceiver to the submarine. In the preferred embodiment the transmit optics spread the beam out into an elongated elliptically-shaped pattern to maximize coverage of the search area. When the downlink beam energy is within range of the submarine, an optical receiver on the submarine detects the beam, filters out the background light with a very narrow-band filter, and converts the light pulses to equivalent electrical pulses. A signal processor in the submarine receiver decodes the electrical pulses and verifies the IFF code to prevent the submarine from responding to a laser beam from an unfriendly source.

    Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for remotely measuring the diffuse attenuation coefficient K of ocean water from a platform such as an aircraft flying over the ocean. A pulsed laser beam is directed as a probe beam from the aircraft into the water to produce therein Brillouin backscattering signals which emanate back up through the water to the aircraft. An optical receiver in the aircraft receives and processes those backscattered signals. A very narrow optical bandpass filter passes the Brillouin signals to a photodetector, a digitizer and a data processor, the latter being programmed to compute the diffuse attenuation coefficient at predetermined depths and at the Brillouin wavelength. Measurements of the diffuse attenuation coefficient at various depths is accomplished by sampling and digitizing the Brillouin signals at predetermined intervals, each interval corresponding to a depth beneath the surface of the water.

    Abstract: A method of remotely measuring the diffuse attenuation coefficient K of ocean water from an airborne platform such as an aircraft. By directing a pulsed laser beam having a wavelength .lambda..sub.0 from the platform into the water, the beam interacts therewith to produce inelastic Brillouin backscatter signals at the wavelength .lambda..sub.1, where .lambda..sub.1 .noteq..lambda..sub.0. The desired backscatter propagate generally oppositely to the direction of propagation of the pulsed laser beam so that the backscatter can be received and collected at the platform. The upwelling optical energy includes the desired backscatter signals, which are separated out from the remainder of the upwelling optical energy. The separated backscatter signals are converted to equivalent electrical signals and periodically analyzed to generate therefrom the diffuse attenuation coefficient of the ocean water at the .lambda..sub.1 wavelength at periodic depths beneath the water surface.

The intensities of the two beams, which exceed a predetermined threshold are sufficient to cause stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) within the two samples and produce therefrom two phase-conjugate beams. The two phase-conjugate beams are mixed to produce a heterodyne frequency that is proportional to the difference in temperature T.sub.s and T.sub.r. The frequency difference is converted into a temperature value equal to the value of T.sub.s.

    Abstract: A multi-standard color field sequence detector includes an analog and a digital processor section, wherein the analog processor section receives a reference video input and provides the signals necessary to drive the digital processor section. A correlator control circuit counts an exact number of 13.5 MHz reference clock cycles, and then supplies a start signal to a burst correlator circuit, which takes samples of a plurality of cycles of burst and correlates the results to determine the polarity of the burst samples. If they are of a first polarity, a count value of corresponding polarity is supplied. If they are of the opposite polarity, a count value of the corresponding opposite polarity is supplied. The sequence of the polarities of the final counts are detected to identify the color field 1 for the standard being used.
