  • Patent number: 6594271
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing an opportunistic data capability for an existing statistical multiplexing encoder platform, such as a multi-channel video data encoder. An Opportunistic Data Processor (ODP) is provided as a plug-in card or an external device that can be interfaced with an existing multi-channel encoder. The ODP communicates with a Quantization Level Processor (QLP) and Packet Multiplexer (PM) in the multi-channel encoder as if it was just another channel encoder. The ODP implements a special rate control scheme by encoding data and sending it to the PM only when a global Quantization Level (QL) indicates that spare bandwidth is available. Spare bandwidth is assumed to be available when the global QL is less than a threshold value. Moreover, the OPD sends a bandwidth need parameter to the QLP, as do the other channel encoders.

  • Patent number: 6588015
Abstract: A digital radio broadcast system provides various interactive features, including skip forward and skip backward. In one embodiment, data is transmitted at a faster than real time rate and accumulated in a buffer at a receiver. The user can play a current track or skip to subsequent or earlier tracks. In another embodiment, two or more programming service streams (i.e., user channels) are communicated such that a user can move directly from a current track to the beginning of a track of another stream. In another embodiment, tiers of service levels are provided so that paying subscribers can bypass some or all of the commercial messages, while non-paying subscribers can not bypass the commercials. Replacement programming may be transmitted in a portion of the bandwidth of the free service. At a receiver, control data may be used with multimedia data to provide a multimedia clip which identifies features of a track, such as artist, song title or lyrics.

  • Patent number: 6580754
Abstract: An optimal system for determining whether simulcast coding (400) or spatial scalability coding (100) should be used to encode video for clients with a specific communication link. Operating points (A′, B′, C′) for both simulcast coding and spatial scalability are also determined. Adaptive switching (3130, 3140) is provided, with the operating points and decision boundaries being used to guide the switching to optimize the quality of the higher-resolution data based on a bit allocation to the associated lower-resolution data. A system for determining the point (A′, C′) of equal quality in both layers of simulcast and spatial scalability coding is also provided. The proportion of bits allocated to the base layer to achieve equal quality is essentially independent of the total bit rate for both simulcast and spatial scalability.

  • Patent number: 6573945
Abstract: An encoder and encoding method for inserting logos into a digital television signal. The logo insertion is performed at the front end of the encoder (e.g., prior to compression) by sharing the video capture frame buffer of the encoder, so there is no need for a separate logo inserter with a separate buffer, and encoding cost are reduced. An alpha blending function receives logo image and logo alpha map data for blending with input video data. The input video is retrieved from the frame buffer, and written back to the frame buffer after blending with the logo data. Subsequently, the frame buffer contents are provided to a pre-processing function for filtering and film mode detection. For a film mode frame, a drop field decision is provided from the pre-processing function to the frame buffer to drop the redundant field. The pre-processed video data is then provided for conventional compression processing. In an HDTV embodiment, several compressors are provided which each receive a panel of a video frame.

  • Patent number: 6570922
Abstract: A rate control system suitable for use with a digital video transcoder, such as one conforming to the MPEG standard. The proposed rate control system starts coding with any reasonable set of assumed Group of Pictures (GOP) parameters, thereby avoiding a processing delay of about one GOP which would otherwise be incurred to extract the complete GOP structure information from a pre-compressed bit stream. In addition, the system avoids the need to store the data corresponding to the GOP, thereby reducing the memory required for transcoding. Encoding of a first picture in a sequence or GOP begins without a priori knowledge of the picture type of subsequent pictures. A reasonable set of GOP parameters is assumed to determine an encoding bit budget. The bit budget is gradually corrected as successive pictures are coded according to their picture types. Changes in the GOP structure of pre-compressed bitstreams can be addressed, for example, when switching channels, inserting commercials, and the like.

Abstract: An implant for insertion between vertebrae of the verterbral column having a substantially rectangular or trapezoidal cross-section and covering faces adapted to face the adjacent vertebrae which are porous and/or designed with a profile. The implant has such a width that it substantially covers at the maximum the rear half of the vertebrae facing the spinous process, preferably at the maximum the rear third of the vertebrae facing the spinous process, and such a length that it substantially covers the rear region of the vertebrae. The limiting surface of the implant facing the inside of the vertebrae and extending in the direction of the adjacent vertebrae is convex. This enables an adequate and reliable supporting function to be achieved with only one implant and can easily be inserted sideways from behind.
