Abstract: An electrochemical cell precursor and method of making it are provided; and a method of making an electrochemical cell and electrodes therefor. The cell precursor comprises a housing having an anode terminal exposed to its interior. An electrolyte is in the housing for electrochemically coupling the terminal to a cathode in the housing, a cathode precursor being in the housing. The cell precursor is made by loading the electrolyte and cathode precursor into the housing, such that the anode is electrochemically coupled by the electrolyte to the cathode precursor, being electrochemically insulated therefrom. The cell and its electrodes are made by subjecting the cell precursor to a charging potential whereby the cathode precursor acts as a cathode. The cathode precursor comprises at least one compound of lithium, manganese and oxygen, which falls in a defined area of an isothermal slice of the Li-Mn-O phase diagram at 20.degree. C.

Abstract: A process for desulfurization of fuel combustion gases and a new reactor wherein the primary flue gas stream containing sulfur oxides and alkaline oxide solids flows into the reactor vessel. A plurality of baffle columns is positioned at the top of the reactor vessel which serve to separate the primary stream into a plurality of first streams containing substantially all of the alkaline oxide solids and a plurality of second streams comprising substantially solids-free gas. The first streams are wetted after which they recombine with the second streams to produce reaction product sulfates and sulfites. The reaction product is substantially dry because the hot second streams cause evaporation of substantially all of the moisture from the wetted first streams.
Abstract: A catalytic molecule comprising a receptor molecule containing an antibody combining site that immunologically binds to a plurality of polyvalent metal ion-containing coordination complexes is disclosed. The coordination complex of a first immunoligand is kinetically inert, whereas the coordination complex of a second immunoligand is kinetically labile. The receptor molecule catalyzes a reaction of the second immunoligand. Immunogens, antigens, and methods of making and using the catalytic receptors are disclosed, as are receptor molecules that catalyze the hydrolysis of a predetermined peptide bond.

Abstract: A hydrophobic polyvinyl chloride chip composition is described which has a preferred affinity for air when in water. The chip is supernatant in water after contact with air and has a skin layer containing a surface conditioning agent.A method for separating a PET/PVC chip admixture is also disclosed. The chip admixture is contacted with a surface conditioning agent to produce relatively hydrophobic polyvinyl chloride chips which can be floated in an aerated aqueous medium. The polyethylene terephthalate chips are recovered from the bottom of the aqueous medium. The flotation can be conducted in pure water without frothing or densifying agents.
Abstract: A coin operated, computer controlled vending machine prints and dispenses novelty business cards, change of address cards and the like. The vending machine comprises a computer having a keyboard and video screen. The vending machine includes a card dispenser, a printer and a coin acceptor which are interconnected with and controlled by the computer. When a user inserts a minimum preset amount of money into the coin acceptor, the card dispenser is activated whereby a preset number of blank cards are dispensed to the user. The computer is simultaneously activated and prompts the user to input the information to be printed onto the cards. The information to be printed on the cards is keyed into the computer and is visually displayed on the video screen. Various printed card formats are available.
Abstract: In an optical fingerprinting system a truncated prism is used. The prism has an imaging surface against which a finger is applied, an illumination surface substantially parallel to the imaging surface and an inclined viewing surface between the imaging and illumination surfaces. Opposite the included viewing surface is another inclined surface that is coated with light absorbent material. The remaining two end surfaces of the prism may also be similarly coated. When a light source is positioned beside the illumination surface light enters the prism and causes an image of the fingerprint to be invisible on the viewing surface. As a finger is rolled on the imaging surface a linear charge coupled device (CCD) may be moved in synchronism to record the whole image.
