  • Patent number: 4254716
Abstract: An integrated fuel preparation and incinerator system and method for utilizing organic solid and semi-solid waste materials as a primary boiler fuel is provided. The organic waste fuel materials are refined to allow for improved combustion efficiency. Combinations of the organic fuel wastes with inorganic wastes are first dried to attain maximum thermal potential; and thereafter, special dry precombustion processing allows for the removal of undesirable inorganics, thereby reducing the adverse physical and chemical effects upon the process hardware. The organic waste fuels are further refined during drying to a constant moisture which enhances combustion flame stability and organic fuel burnout efficiency.

  • Patent number: 4250128
Abstract: Annular magnets, primarily for motor stators, are centrifugally cast from particulate materials and synthetic plastic materials. Iron particles and ferrite particles stratified during the spin casting procedures so that the former provide an outer stratum that serves as a yoke in the permanently magnetized structure. The anisotropic ferrite particles are magnetically oriented during casting by a rotating center magnet with the aid of bucking magnets that also rotate and serve to confine the field of the center magnet to the cavity area. Apparatus for carrying out the process is disclosed and includes means for introducing the plastic and particulate materials to the mold cavity while the mold is rotating as well as mold arrangements that facilitate material introduction by the creation of reduced pressure conditions in the cavity during the rotation of the mold.

  • Patent number: 4248305
Abstract: A system and method of moving near-surface water to a deep water aquifer at a high rate of transfer and with no external energy sources, and which additionally generates excess energy available for other uses. The system comprises at least one deep well into the deep aquifer and one or more shallow wells into a near-surface water table aquifer having siphon pipes from the shallow wells to the deep well. Siphon action is initiated resulting in a continuing flow of water from the shallow wells to the deep well. A water-driven turbine is disposed in the deep well above its tail water level and below the lower end of the siphon tubes. The water flow operates the turbine and the turbine shaft drives an external vacuum pump. Each shallow well has a closed top plate, and suction from the vacuum pump is applied through the top plate, holding the water level above its normal point increasing the draw down.

  • Patent number: 4245648
Abstract: The system of the present invention includes a sensor head which is coupled to an exteriorized artery. The sensor head includes electromechanical transducers at first and second locations which convert each periodic arterial pulse pressure wave passing the first and second locations into first and second periodic electrical waveforms. Electronic circuitry analyzes the first and second periodic electrical waveforms to determine the rise time of each periodic waveform produced by the first and second transducers. This electronic circuitry also analyzes the first and second periodic waveforms to determine the transit time of each pulse pressure wave between the first and second locations. An electronic computer utilizes the rise time and transit time data and certain calibration data to determine and display systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, and pulse rate immediately following each pulse pressure wave.

  • Patent number: 4243050
Abstract: An apparatus and related method for implanting pacemaker electrodes and similar devices within a patient include an introducer with a tapered end adapted to extend into the patient's body, and a hollow, tubular sleeve having a first portion with an inner dimension greater than the outer dimension of the introducer and a second portion at one end of the sleeve which extends parallel with the introducer and in close engagement therewith, with a gradual taper along the sleeve between the first and second portions. The sleeve has a longitudinal slit along the first portion and through the taper, but short of the forward extremity, to permit the sleeve to be peeled away from the pacemaker electrode after introduction. The introducer and sleeve include corresponding hub and flange arrangements which provide a means for locking the two elements together to prevent inadvertent motion of the sleeve with respect to the introducer as the two elements are being inserted into the patient.

  • Patent number: 4243464
Abstract: A laminating machine and the method incorporated therein includes a pair of opposing and substantially parallel cylindrical steel rollers defining a continuous pressure line between the outer cylindrical surfaces thereof. A sheet is fed between the rollers in a first direction substantially transverse to the pressure line, and a film to be laminated is fed onto the sheet surface and with the sheet in the first direction. A fluid pressure cylinder-lever arm arrangement is provided with one of the rollers for applying relative pressure between the two rollers along the pressure line during passage of the film-sheet combination therebetween, the pressure being in an amount sufficient to compress the sheet to effect complete bonding of the film to the sheet surface, but in an amount less than that which causes structural damage to the sheet. The outer surface of one of the rollers is heated during the laminating process.

  • Patent number: 4237696
Abstract: An air conditioning system for taking atmospheric air under any seasonal condition and delivering refrigerated, dry, high density air to a compressor which can then operate at full capacity delivering dry, full volume air to a reheater and air dryer which delivers dry plant air in a plant air system. The compressed air system has a water chiller for chilling water passing therethrough in a water line when the water is above a predetermined temperature and a pump for pumping the water from the chiller water line into an inlet air cooler and dryer which is coupled to the atmosphere to receive atmospheric air and remove moisture. The compressor receives the air from the inlet cooler and dryer, compresses the air, and delivers it to a reheat air dryer where additional moisture is removed and the air is reheated. The chiller water line from the inlet cooler dryer passes through the reheat air dryer to remove additional moisture and back into the water chiller to form a closed cycle recycling water system.

  • Patent number: 4228360
Abstract: Apparatus for producing useful work from wave motion in a body of water. The apparatus translates wave motions of varying periods to continuous rotational kinetic energy which is then available to perform useful work. A float assembly is anchored off shore and communicates with the shore via a steel cable. The float rises and falls with the waves and is arranged to cause a reciprocating translational motion of the cable. A cable drum assembly is anchored to the ground on the shore and adapted to reel and unreel the cable by means of a rewind spring. As the cable unreels, the drum drives a transfer gear via a first ratchet which is therefore operative only in one direction. The transfer gear winds a heavy spiral energy storage spring via a second ratchet. The spring is attached to an anchor plate which drives a shaft. The shaft is coupled via a step-up gear train to an energy storage flywheel.

  • Patent number: 4228532
Abstract: An electroacoustic transducer having high acoustic-to-electric energy conversion per unit volume. The transducer is in the form of a body having a cylindrical central section and hemispherical end sections, the central section and the end sections formed from active piezoelectric material and electrically interconnected with respect to a pair of output terminals wherein the polarizations of the central section and the end sections are arranged to convert acoustic pressure on the entire external surface area of said body to be effective in producing electrical energy. The physical parameters of each section are matched to produce essentially equal electrical characteristics of each section to form an inherently symmetrical transducer. The transducer has high sensitivity for a small size and is especially adapted for use in thin line towed arrays. The symmetrical form, polarities and balanced connections of the transducer provide cancellation of forces due to acceleration.
