  • Patent number: 4302944
Abstract: A local delivery truck 10 is provided with a thermal storage system for cooling the truck for a delivery run after the system has been charged during periods of off-peak power demand. This is done by chilling, with a refrigerant evaporator 32, a first high density fluid 24 such as methyl chloroform and circulating the chilled methyl chloroform from the lower part 22 of the storage container 20 to the surface of a second, lower density fluid 28. the latter is an anti-freeze solution such as water-methyl alcohol, and occupies the upper part 26 of the storage container. The chilling and circulating continues until the anti-freeze solution contains the desired amount of ice and slush which has formed at ever lowering temperatures.

  • Patent number: 4249389
Abstract: This invention provides a direct oil return system from the accumulator tank in the refrigerant circuit of a transport refrigeration system to the crankcase of the compressor for returning oil entrained in the refrigerant to the oil sump. A pressure relief valve in the lubricating oil circulating system positively opens under the influence of oil pressure from the positive displacement oil pump whenever the compressor is operating to bleed excess oil from the pump back to the sump. The oil return line from the accumulator tank of the refrigeration system is connected to the valve to enter through another inlet port which opens in response to the pressure relief valve being opened and flows therethrough to another outlet in the valve also in communication with the sump.

  • Patent number: 4245966
Abstract: In a device such as a refrigerant compressor provided with a reciprocating piston having a stroke length which can be changed from one value to another in accordance with the direction of rotation of the crankshaft driving a connecting rod, there is provided an arrangement in which the top deadcenter position of the piston can be maintained irrespective of the changes in stroke length by an eccentric ring which has limited rotation on the crankshaft crankpin, and a second eccentric ring encompassing the first eccentric ring and which has limited rotation relative to the encompassing strap end of the connecting rod. With this arrangement, both the throw of the crankpin means and the effective length of the connecting rod are generally concurrently changed inversely when the crankshaft rotates in one direction or alternatively in the other direction.
