  • Patent number: 6860687
Abstract: A weld-on part made of aluminum or an aluminum alloy, such as but not limited to a stud (1), which has a surface which is at least partially provided with a layer (5) which contains a titanium containing material. The stud (1) is treated with a chrome-free passivating solution which imparts corrosion resistance while simultaneously causing a layer (5) of titanium containing material to be formed on at least a portion of the surface of the stud (1). The layer (5) of titanium containing material permits the stud (1) to be satisfactorily welded to a surface, without the occurrence of arc jumping or blowing, in part, by lowering contact resistance during the welding process.

  • Patent number: 6815631
Abstract: The invention relates to a multiple stage method for arc-welding a bolt (3) to a metal structure (1), said bolt (3) having a flange (5) at the end that is to be welded on. The actual welding process is preceded by a cleaning method that is carried out by means of an arc. Said cleaning method consists of two or more stages. It is crucial to control the arc and the distance between the bolt (3) and the structure surface (7) in such a way that only cleaning takes place, without causing premature welding. While during the first cleaning state, only a small surface is cleaned intensively, in the second stage, a larger surface is cleaned due to a greater distance between the bolt (3) and the structure surface (7). Separation through interruption of the arc and maintenance of the bolt (3) in a stationary position at a distance from the structure surface (7) must take place between the first and second cleaning stages.

  • Patent number: 6660958
Abstract: A process and apparatus for welding a metal component to a metal workpiece. The component typically comprises a metal weld region and a threaded connector region and the apparatus includes a weld head comprising a nozzle for holding the weld region of the component adjacent the workpiece. The weld head induces a weld arc between the weld region of the component and the workpiece to create a weld pool of molten material. The weld head subsequently moves the weld region into the weld pool to permanently join the component to the workpiece. The apparatus further comprises a pressurized fluid source and a fluid flow control means for directing the pressurized fluid between the weld head and the component an weld pool so as to deflect any airborne fluid residue of the weld pool away from the connector region of the component.

  • Patent number: 6588576
Abstract: A fastening element 30 is fed from a feed track 64 through a feed chamber, formed by interfacing closed channels 132 and 160, to a junction point located in a feed passage 84, formed by two communicating feed openings 86 and 88. An inclined surface 82, located between the feed chamber and the junction point, is inclined downward from the feed chamber to the junction point. A ram 105, located movably in the feed chamber, transfers the fastening element 30 from the feed track 64 to the inclined surface 82, where the fastening element moves down the inclined surface to the junction point. Upon the application of a pressure medium into the feed passage 84, selectively in either of two directions, the fastening element 30 can be directed toward a fastening device 104.

  • Patent number: 6568062
Abstract: A through-hole self-piercing rivet 30 is assembled with two metal plates 50 and 52 to retain the plates together as a workpiece 54. When the rivet 30 is to be removed, a pin, such as a contact pin 56, is attached to the rivet by fusion, or a pin, such as a threaded mandrel 78, is attached threadedly to the rivet. The contact pin 56 or the threaded mandrel 78 is withdrawn from the workpiece 54 to thereby withdraw the attached rivet 30 from the workpiece. Devices 62 and 84 provide facility for effecting the attachment of the contact pin 56 and the threaded mandrel 78, respectively, with the rivet 30, and for the extraction of the rivet from the workpiece 54.

  • Patent number: 6505756
Abstract: In a delivery device small parts (15) in the nature of studs, bushes, pins and suchlike are conducted by means of a perpendicularly displaceable strut (6) into a transportation channel (11) from a sloping collection area (1). The strut (6) slides along a retaining and dividing wall (3) and has an upper narrow side 6a which slopes obliquely downwards towards the retaining and dividing wall (3). Owing to the obliquely downwards directed slope of the upper narrow side (6a) the small parts (15) become reliably lodged on the retaining and dividing wall (3) when the strut (6) is located in its lower operating position (FIG. 2). In the upper operating position the small parts (15) slide obliquely downwards over the retaining and dividing wall (3) into the transportation channel (11). A metering plate (7) with projections and gaps, located on the strut (6) in its upper region, determines how many small parts (15) are to be conducted into the transportation channel (11) each time the strut (6) is lifted.
