Abstract: In some embodiments of the present invention, a method for designing one or more surfaces of an ophthalmic optical element for an eye suffering at least from higher order aberrations includes computing an eye model and optimizing a merit function. The eye model may be computed from data on defocus of the eye, astigmatism of the eye and the higher order aberrations. The merit function may be defined in terms of the eye model and in terms of parameters of a representation of the surfaces. The optimization of the merit function yields a set of optimized parameters which can be used to obtain a description of the surfaces. The ophthalmic optical element may be a lens for spectacles, a contact lens, an intraocular lens or a multifocal lens for spectacles. The method may also be used to design the topography of corneal tissue.

Abstract: A method and system are presented for producing an audio/video stream with improved video quality for a given bitrate, using non-standard sampling rates while preserving timely playback by the decoder. The method may include sub-sampling according to a duty cycle and/or time-slapping frames in an audio/visual stream.
Abstract: Methods and systems for separating a picture part of interest from an arbitrary background in real time videos are presented. The background may be a moving or still frame. The picture part of interest and background frames may be in or out of focus. One separation approach employs the difference between luminance and chrominance values of the input and background frames where changes in luminance from frame to frame are compensated for. In another approach, picture part of interest separation is based solely on spatial resolution differences between the background and the picture part of interest frames. The present invention also teaches a method and system for parameter matching of the picture part of interest and the basic picture into which the picture part of interest is embedded. The invention further teaches a method and system for embedding a separated picture part of interest into a basic picture containing text.

The visual perception estimator estimates a perception threshold for a pixel of a current frame of a videostream. The encoder encodes the current frame. The compression dependent threshold estimator estimates a compression dependent threshold for the pixel at least from the perception threshold and information from the encoder. The filter unit filters the pixel at least according to the compression dependent threshold.

Abstract: A method for recognizing input characters handwritten onto an input area of an input device, each point of the input area being represented by coordinate values. The recognizing step at least uses recognition features and a weighting function of each of the plurality of reference characters in the reference library and the input position. The signal includes at least information about the coordinate values of the input character.
Abstract: A dual pointing device to be used in cooperation with an imaging apparatus, a tracking system, and an object to be imaged. The dual pointing device provides a means for tracking a point on in image in both the image's frame of reference and Euclidean absolute coordinates. This is accomplished by having two tracking systems follow the dual pointing device. Since the two tracking systems follow the same physical device, and since one tracking system operates in the image coordinates while the other tracking system operates in the absolute coordinates, the device makes it possible to effect automatic transformations between the two systems. More specifically, in the preferred embodiment of the dual pointing device, which is intended for use with a magnetic resonance imager, the absolute tracking system is based on infra-red reflectors on the device that are tracked by an infrared transponder.
