  • Patent number: 5980535
Abstract: A position signaling is usable in connection with an image guided surgery system. A plurality of infrared emitters are mounted on a reference object. The reference object is in turn attached to the rocker arm of a head clamp. The head clamp includes a frame and a first head engaging pin secured to one side of the frame. The rocker arm includes two head engaging pins and is movable in relation to the frame. The image guided surgery system uses the signals provided by the infrared emitters to determine and account for movement of the patient's head.

  • Patent number: 5978447
Abstract: A rotating assembly 79 includes an anode assembly 55 coupled to a shaft 70 and a rotor 75 including a rotor body 77. The anode assembly 55 includes an elongated neck portion 58 and is rotated via the shaft 70 about an axis of rotation 65 in an x-ray tube 12. The shaft 70 is mounted by a straddle bearing assembly 68 having a bearing housing 100. The bearing housing 100 includes a first elongated portion 101 and second elongated portion 102, and a base portion 103. The first elongated portion 101 and the second elongated portion 102 each pass through a center of mass C of the rotating assembly 79 and define an cooling duct 119 for removing heat from the anode assembly 55 during operations. A first bearing 90a and a second bearing 90b are disposed in the bearing housing 100 on opposite sides of the center of mass C of the rotating assembly 79.

  • Patent number: 5904691
Abstract: A surgical guide for use with an image guided surgery includes first and second surfaces. At least three signaling devices such as infrared emitters are disposed on the first surface, and a cylindrical mounting boss is disposed on the second surface. A guide aperture is perpendicular to the first and second surfaces and extends between them. The guide aperture is configured to support a surgical tool such as a biopsy needle. A sleeve may be placed in the aperture to support additional tools.

  • Patent number: 5882304
Abstract: A magnetic probe (1) for use with a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus comprises an electron spin resonance (ESR) magnetometer. The position of the probe (1) tracked by measuring the resonant frequency of an ESR sample (32) in the probe. The resonant frequency is measured in the presence of a gradient sequence which employs three orthogonal, linear gradients. By determining the resonant frequency of the ESR sample in the presence of each of the gradients, the position of the probe can be determined. The probe may be placed on or in an object, and the position of the probe may be displayed on a desired magnetic resonance image of the object.

  • Patent number: 5879300
Abstract: A method and coil arrangement for use in magnetic resonance imaging facilitates the examination of a localized region of the body. A plurality of substantially identical saddle coils are disposed about a former. The coils, which define a generally cylindrical volume, overlap one another in a circumferential direction. In one embodiment, a generally planar rectangular coil intersects the cylindrical volume. The method and coil arrangement are particularly well suited to imaging a region adjacent but outside the cylindrical volume. The coil arrangement is also well suited to insertion within the body, especially the rectum.

  • Patent number: 5876338
Abstract: An MR compatible endoscope 1 has associated MR saddle coil 10 mounted on a removeable former 9. The tip 2 of the endoscope has the usual service channels for imaging. The coil 10 provides an additional MR signal. To avoid the need to plug the coil 10 in, it is inductively couples to a pick-up coil 13 and, to enable this to be removable as will from the endoscope, this may be located in one of the service channels 7 of the endoscope. The removable nature of the coil permits easy repair and, more importantly, a range of coils to be fitted to the endoscope to accommodate different magnetic field strengths.
