Patent number: 5002877Abstract: Increased yields of enzymes, particularly tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), are produced from cells, particularly CNCM I-222 cells, by a process using less concentrated lectin, particularly concanavalin A, in culture medium added to replace initial growth medium than has been used hitherto. After first harvesting of enzyme in supernatants, the culture can be reactivated by the addition of fresh culture medium containing an even lower lectin concentration, and a further harvest of enzyme obtained. The two harvests of enzyme together can give a greater overall yield than a single harvest after a single induction step employing the conventionally used higher lectin concentrations. Enzyme yield can be further increased by repeating the last incubation step once or twice to obtain one or two further harvests.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1990Date of Patent: March 26, 1991Assignees: Porton Products Ltd, Public Health Lab. Patent number: 4816250Abstract: A vaccine against a DNA virus, for exmaple, Herpes simplex virus, is prepared by incubating a cell sample which has been infected with the virus, releasing the nuclei in the infected cell material from the cytoplasmic fraction of that material, chemically fixing the polypeptide chains in the cytoplasmic fraction, and forming a precipitate which includes the virus antigens in the cytoplasmic fraction, the precipitate providing the active constituent of the vaccine. A characteristic strain of the virus is preferred, and transfers its characteristics to the vaccine so that vaccinated subjects may subsequently be distinguished from infected subjects.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1983Date of Patent: March 28, 1989Assignee: University of BirminghamInventors: Gordon R. Patent number: 4654501Abstract: A method is presented for metal bonding of a base metal by creation of a weld puddle by means of an air cooled gas-tungsten-arc torch. As the puddle is created, the filler metal is fed as a wire into the puddle by means of a cold wire feed mechanism. The torch is automatically moved across the base metal in a longitudinal direction. The filler metal is deposited as the torch transverses the base metal. At the end of each stroke, the base metal is automatically indexed radially to the width of the weld bead. The process is continued until the bearing journal has been completely covered with filler metal to the required thickness. In a disclosed preferred method, the filler metal is a tin, antimony, copper babbitt alloy which is bonded to a bronze metal for bearings.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1985Date of Patent: March 31, 1987Inventor: Ray Piatt

Patent number: 4433822Abstract: The invention disclosed provides a paint can receptacle having a circular strip horizontally disposed to receive a paint can. A J-shaped ladder grip projects tangentially from the circular strip for rail engagement by the leg portion thereof. A first pivotal pin is positioned in the vicinity of the tangential union of the J-shaped ladder grip and the circular strip and joins a downwardly projecting vertical support member to the circular strip. A second pivotal pin is positioned diametrically opposite the first pivotal pin and joins the circular strip with a vertically disposed ladder rung gripping member intermediately therealong. The ladder rung gripping member has an arcuate terminal upper edge for rung engagement. A base support member is secured between the lower edge of the ladder rung gripping member and the lower edge of the downwardly projecting verticle support member thereby providing a support surface for the bottom of a paint can.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1981Date of Patent: February 28, 1984Inventor: Nurmi Caggiano

Patent number: 4313786Abstract: Patent discloses a method and an apparatus for the recovery of organic solvents from mixtures of organic solvents and polymers soluble or dispersible in the organic solvents. The method comprises the heating, by microwave radiation utilizing a magnetron type radiation source, of the mixture causing said mixture to reach the heat of flashing and/or evaporation of the solvent, collecting the solvent as it so vaporizes and recovering fresh solvent. The dry cake can be discarded or reused depending upon the extent of polymerization.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1980Date of Patent: February 2, 1982Inventor: Jerold B. Smith

Patent number: 4256085Abstract: The invention disclosed provides a new improved method and system for generating heat efficiently by means of frictional heat produced by a rotating impeller disposed within a closed housing which contains a heat transfer liquid and a gaseous layer. Rotation of the impeller generates heat as well as pressure in the system such that circulation of the heat transfer liquid may be readily effected through a closed conduit circuit to a heat dissipator. In a preferred embodiment, the rotating impeller is disposed within a diffuser which functions to increase the velocity of the heat transfer liquid and increase the static pressure within the system.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 1979Date of Patent: March 17, 1981Inventor: Howard C.
