Patent number: 5189432Abstract: A distributed antenna system for wireless communication inside enclosed areas such as buildings, tunnels, etc., includes an antenna cable and a termination circuit which provides a plurality of termination impedances for the cable, varying as a function of time. The termination circuit may include a diode coupled to the cable at a remote end of the cable and a bias voltage generator coupled to a local end of the cable. Changes in bias voltage alternately forward biases and reverse biases the diode, effectively changing the termination impedance of the antenna cable. As the impedance changes, nodes and regions of high multipath distortion move, so the probability is greatly increased that personnel with remote communication equipment will be able to send and receive good quality signals over the antenna cable at any given location.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1991Date of Patent: February 23, 1993Assignee: Harris CorporationInventors: Robert Lombardi, George Rassweiler, Jon M. Patent number: 5187739Abstract: A call progress circuit for both a customer owned, coin operated telephone and a regulated telephone is provided that does not mute the paystation's transmitter, so that voice signals from the calling party may be heard by the called party, thereby preventing an answering party from hanging up prematurely. The call progress circuit employs a transmitter-sourced audio signal discriminator which monitors audio signals placed on the line from the called station, the calling paystation and a central office, and controllably removes or subtracts out those audio signals that originate at the paystation transmitter. The discriminator includes a pair of tunable bandpass filters respectively associated with a telephone line receiver and the paystation transmitter circuit. Coupled to these filters is an audio spectrum scanner which sequentially adjusts the sensitivity characteristics of the filters.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1991Date of Patent: February 16, 1993Assignee: International Teleservice Corp.Inventors: Marcus K. Patent number: 5187773Abstract: A Qualitative Reasoning System (QRS) performs machine failure isolation by generating a plurality of pending hypotheses which assume the failure of one or more machine components and by testing each of the hypotheses by propagating actual values for machine parameters through confluence equations for the hypothosis being tested. Hypotheses which produce an inconsistent set of predictions are discarded while hypotheses which produce a consistent set of predictions are saved. The hypotheses are generated using a model instance data element which contains a qualitative physics model description of the machine. The machine failure is isolated when all but one hypothesis, which assumes the failure of one or more elementary machine components, remains.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 1990Date of Patent: February 16, 1993Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Thomas P. Patent number: 5185571Abstract: In conventional processes of electron beam measuring, the measurement of signals at a measuring point of a sample occurs following scanning and averaging procedures with the aid of potential contrasts. For this purpose, the point of measurement is impinged upon with a short primary electron pulse, which is released by a trigger pulse, which is synchronous to the signal to be measured. The average value of the secondary electron pulse stream resulting from very many primary electrons is measured and is a measure for the signal at the measuring position at the point in time of the impingement of the primary electrons. The generation of primary electron pulses occurs with a beam modulation system. As the primary electron pulses are generated in response to the trigger pulses, this system has to be designed very widebanded.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1991Date of Patent: February 9, 1993Inventor: Hans-Detlef Brust

Patent number: 5185292Abstract: An edge connector is formed along a sidewall edge of a relatively thin semiconductor wafer. The wafer contains a signal processing circuit to which the edge connector is to be electrically joined. For this purpose a region of material capable of being bonded with conductive material is formed in the wafer and a trench pattern is formed in a first surface of the wafer, so as to expose a sidewall portion of the doped region. The doped region is connected to signal processing circuitry within the wafer. A metallic layer is then electroplated onto the exposed sidewall portion of the doped region. A layer of polishing resistant material, such as silicon nitride, is formed in the trench and the wafer is inverted and wax-mounted face down on a support member such that the first surface of the wafer faces the support member. The wafer is then polished as to effect a thinning of the wafer down to a level which exposes the polishing resistant material in the trench pattern.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1991Date of Patent: February 9, 1993Assignee: Harris CorporationInventors: Nicolaas W.
