Abstract: There is disclosed a process for producing a dispersion of a phenolic resin in water by mixing a pre-formed, solid, substantially water-insoluble, phenolic resin with water, an organic coupling solvent, and polyvinyl alcohol. The resulting dispersions are especially useful in coatings applications.
Abstract: There is described a new "one-step" bis A-formaldehyde resin, and a molding material containing the resin with which one may achieve molded products possessing excellent properties and almost optimum molding characteristics such as excellent molding latitude, low degree of mold shrinkage, high modulus at elevated temperature, a low degree of deformation at elevated temperatures, and excellent steam crack resistance and electrical properties. The molding material comprises a light colored bis-A formaldehyde resin and reinforcing filler for the resin. The resin is a heat convertible resin (resole) which comprises the product of the reaction of formaldehyde and bis A in the mole ratio of about 2 to about 3.75, in the presence of a catalytic amount of an alkali metal hydroxide or barium hydroxide condensation catalyst. The molding material of this invention is particularly desirable in making molded products by the injection molding or transfer molding processes.

Abstract: A portable lantern comprising a housing having a transparent lens section, an electric light source mounted within said housing, reflector means rotatably mounted within the transparent section of said housing and disposed to project light emitted by said electric light through the transparent section of said housing in a substantially horizontal beam of increased intensity, means for continuously rotating said reflector means at a speed so that a light beam is projected thereby in a circular pattern through said transparent section at a frequency which produces the effect of continuous illumination, and battery power means for energizing said electric light source and reflector rotating means arranged within said housing, said portable lantern being suitable for providing substantially continuous illumination over a large area.
Abstract: Acidic cation exchange resin whose activity has been reduced by fouling from phenolic tars and/or by contamination by metal ions, is regenerated by treating such resin with an acidified phenol/water wash.
Abstract: Aqueous phenolic resole dispersions are disclosed. The dispersions are produced in the presence of certain hydroxyalkylated gums, such as hydroxyalkylated guar gum, as interfacial agents.
Abstract: There is provided a novel shirred and compressed tubular food casing, including a casing having a fibrous web embedded in the wall thereof, having a continuous barrier coating adhered to the surface thereof. A method for preparing said shirred casing comprises shirring a barrier coated tubular casing, said tubular casing having a moisture content of at least 10% by weight and said barrier coating exhibiting extensibility characteristics of at least about 4% at 32.degree. F.
Abstract: A transparent, flexible thermoplastic film having a coating comprising a film-forming polyester resin on a surface thereof is provided, said resin coated surface being readily separable from contiguous surfaces of thermoplastic film after heating at temperatures employed in heat-shrinking thermoplastic film. The resin coated film is particularly suitable for use in preparing stable pallet loads wherein the resin coated film surfaces make possible the ready disassembly of the pallet load without damage to any packaging film used in preparing articles for loading on a pallet.

Abstract: Food casings, particularly cellulosic sausage casings, are moisturized during the conventional shirring operation by applying to the interior of the casing stock prior to shirring an aqueous solution of humectant, the solution containing sufficient humectant to retard excessive imbibition of water by the casing.
Abstract: A multi-ply plastic film article having an openable end is provided comprising a first ply of flat flexible plastic film superimposed over a second ply of flat flexible plastic film and having opposite edges thereof joined and an openable end, at least a portion of the first ply of film defining the openable end being distorted to separate at least a portion of the confronting face of said first ply of film from the opposed confronting face of said second ply of film, whereby the distorted portion of film provides means for readily separating the confronting faces of the first and second plies of film.
Abstract: A flexible heat set biaxially oriented film article having in at least one portion thereof a bead type heat seal is prepared by clamping together adjacent the portion to be heat sealed, superimposed plies of a heat set, biaxially oriented polyester film, said film being characterized as having a tensile strength of at least 15,000 psi and a ratio of tensile strengths in the TD to MD direction between about 0.67 and 1.5, imposing a heat energy source to fuse in a bead type seal the superimposed film and maintaining the plies of film pressed together until the source of heat energy is retracted therefrom.
