Patent number: 4184056Abstract: A fault locating system for optical telecommunications includes a central office and means associated therewith for generating a tone signal. Analog to digital conversion means convert the tone signal to a digital signal. Cable driving means, receiving the digital signal, provide a driving output to an optical cable. The optical cable output is coupled to an input of a repeater which reforms the received digital signal before retransmission thereof. The repeater is coupled to an input of a filter which passes signals at a frequency f.sub.1. The output of the first repeater is coupled to an input of a second optical cable. The output of the second optical cable is coupled to an input of a second repeater which reforms the received digital signal before retransmission thereof. The second repeater is coupled to an input of a second filter which passes signals at a frequency f.sub.2. The output of the (n-1)st repeater is coupled to the input of an nth optical cable.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 1978Date of Patent: January 15, 1980Assignee: GTE Laboratories IncorporatedInventors: E. Patent number: 4182028Abstract: An ultra-thin hermetically sealed button-type electrochemical cell is disclosed comprising a pair of mating metallic housing members, at least one of which is generally dish shaped to define an enclosed space therebetween. A peripheral opening defining a fill port is formed in one of the housing members, preferably at the junction formed by the mating surfaces. The interfacing surfaces of the cell housing members are welded together subsequent to the insertion of the internal cell components and prior to the addition of the electrolyte to form a hermetic seal. The electrolyte may then be added and the fill port hermetically sealed by welding. Owing to its relatively small size, the fill port may be quickly sealed so that the heat generated during the weld process is insufficient to volatilize the electrolyte.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 1978Date of Patent: January 8, 1980Assignee: GTE Laboratories Inc.Inventors: James Epstein, Nikola Marincic

Patent number: 4178534Abstract: A light source includes an electrodeless lamp having a generally cylindrically shaped envelope made of a light transmitting substance. A volatile fill material, enclosed within the envelope, emits light upon breakdown and excitation. A termination fixture has an outer conductor disposed around its inner conductor, both conductors having a first end which couples power to the lamp and a second end coupled to an alternating current power source. A first end of conductive means is coupled to the first end of the inner conductor, a second end of the conductive means being open-circuited. The conductive means has an electrical length whereby axial electric field maxima and minima occur thereon. The envelope is oriented centrally and axially within the conductive means so that an axial, non-toroidal arc occurs within the envelope, but does not attach to its interior walls, thereby enhancing the life of the lamp. The conductive means can be formed in a helical or spiral configuration.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 1978Date of Patent: December 11, 1979Assignee: GTE Laboratories IncorporatedInventors: William H. Patent number: 4176925Abstract: Three scanners are disclosed; common to all is an argon ion laser. In the first two versions, light passes through a telescope, which is provided to expand and collimate the laser beam, through a servo-driven iris whose function is to adjust the length of the slit image to be formed by the optics. The beam enters a rotating cradle, passes through a cylindrical lens, and strikes a galvanometer-driven mirror. Rotating the galvanometer about its axis deflects the image of the laser beam on the main scanning mirror. A second lens images the galvanometer mirror onto the CRT panel. In the first version, the main scanning mirror is a flat reflector; in the second version, the scanning mirror is either a prism or a mirror set at 45 degrees to the incident laser beam. In both versions, a motor-driven optical rotator is between the galvanometer-driven mirror and the scanning mirror. Several important features include the servo-driven image rotator and the motor-driven iris.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1978Date of Patent: December 4, 1979Assignee: GTE Laboratories IncorporatedInventors: Robert C. Kocher, Alfred Piorkow

Patent number: 4118334Abstract: A primary electrochemical cell is described in which a novel granular cathode material is utilized. The cathode is formed from about 40 to 99 weight percent of carbon black, at least 1 weight percent of a binder which is inert in the primary electrochemical cell and the remainder thereof is graphite. The cathode material may be formed by mixing the individual components together with a quantity of a suitable liquid to form a uniform slurry. The slurry is then dried at room temperature to remove the liquid. The dried mixture is crumbled into fine particles. The particles are cured at an elevated temperature to stablize the binder. The resulting material when utilized as the cathode material of a primary electrochemical cell provides a porous carbon structure of high surface area in which a network of large channels exists for continual diffusion of electrolytic solution to the carbon cathodic particles throughout the entire volume of the cell cathode regardless of the cell size.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1977Date of Patent: October 3, 1978Assignee: GTE Laboratories IncorporatedInventor: Franz Goebel

Patent number: 4071753Abstract: A transducer is disclosed in which energy received from either mechanical or acoustic sources is converted into modulated optical power. The transducer is comprised of three basic components, an input optical fiber, an output optical fiber and a means for varying the optical coupling coefficient between the two fibers in response to information containing energy received from a mechanical or acoustic source. The input optical fiber carries a steady state optical signal which may be either continuous or pulsed. The means operates to control the coupling of the steady state optical signal into the output optical fiber. An intensity modulated output signal is then carried by the output optical fiber away from the transducer. The intensity modulated output signal may be either detected and thereby converted to electrical energy for transmission or may be transmitted in an optical form if optical communications facilities are available.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1975Date of Patent: January 31, 1978Assignee: GTE Laboratories IncorporatedInventors: John E.
