Patent number: 4399100Abstract: The invention is directed to an apparatus and method for curing polymeric materials by use of a closed-loop, automatic process control technique. A dielectric monitoring device (15) senses the electrical characteristics which are analogous to viscosity changes taking place in an uncured or partially cured polymeric material (10) while heat is applied thereto. The generated analog signal, which changes in response to variations in the capacitance and dissipation of the polymeric material, is fed into a microcomputer (21) which determines from the direction and amplitude of the generated wave form both the maximum and minimum levels of capacitance and dissipation developed. When a predetermined condition is reached, the microcomputer (21) sends a control signal to processing equipment (24,25) to apply pressure, heat and/or vacuum to the polymeric material (10) at or near the onset of gelation but prior to the hardening point.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1980Date of Patent: August 16, 1983Assignee: Lockheed CorporationInventors: Andrew Zsolnay, Kelly M. Patent number: 4389820Abstract: A blasting machine utilizing sublimable particles comprising forming means (14) for producing particles having a substantially uniform length thereto, dispensing means (32) for receiving the particles and for introducing the particles into a low pressure transport gas flow, and a nozzle (44) for accelerating the particles and having a high pressure, low velocity gas flow coupled to it, the nozzle (44) being adapted to convert the high pressure, low velocity gas flow into a low pressure, high velocity gas flow. A conduit (142) coupled to the nozzle (44) and the dispensing means (32) receives the particles and introduces the particles into the low pressure, high velocity gas flow within the nozzle (44) which entrains the particles and accelerates them to a high exit velocity.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1980Date of Patent: June 28, 1983Assignee: Lockheed CorporationInventors: Calvin C. Patent number: 4373092Abstract: A sample of polymeric composite material is cured using conventional curing methods. The optimum time during the cure cycle for applying pressure to the sample is determined by standard resin advancement measuring techniques. A dielectrometer monitoring device (15) is then attached to another material of the same type which is cured under the same conditions to develop an analog signal denoting variations in dissipation of the material. The dissipation curve characteristically has a first and second maximum value, with the latter occurring in the general vicinity of the optimum time for applying pressure for a particular frequency. Thus by changing the frequency, the dissipation is shifted along the time axis so that the second maximum coincides with the optimum time for applying pressure. The generation of a readily recognizable and repeatable feature on the analog wave form, a minimum or maximum, is a prerequisite to triggering process control functions.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1980Date of Patent: February 8, 1983Assignee: Lockheed CorporationInventor: Andrew Zsolnay

Patent number: 4371054Abstract: An acoustical silencer for a gas passage or exhaust duct for a gas turbine engine, which is composed of three parts. The first comprises an absorptive surface to absorb incident low frequency sound the second comprises an acoustically lined duct attenuating high frequency sound transmitted therethrough. The entrance to the first part and the entrance to the second part are essentially coplanar. The third part is a horn-shaped plenum or conical diffuser to contain the flow and distribute the sound over the entry surface of the first part and the entrance to the second part. The entrances to both the first and second parts, being coplanar, present acoustically parallel paths to sound impinging on their common plane. The input impedances of the absorptive surface of the first part and the entrance to the second part are adjusted such that a disproportionately larger share of the incident low frequency acoustical energy passes into the first part and is dissipated.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1979Date of Patent: February 1, 1983Assignee: Lockheed CorporationInventor: Leslie S.
