  • Patent number: 4925520
Abstract: An elastic ribbon is fed over a vacuum drum. Rotating cutter blades use the drum as an anvil to cut the ribbon into spaced apart segments. A sheet comprising a diaper web runs over a roll that is spaced from the drum. A segment transferring and stretching device is arranged between the drum and roll. One embodiment of the transferring device has grippers rotating together about the axes that are not coaxial but are at opposite acute angles relative to the roll and drum axes. The grippers engage an unstretched elastic segment on the drum when the grippers are close together but as they rotate they spread apart and stretch the segment which is then pressed onto the glue treated sheet. In another embodiment of the elastic segment stretching and transferring device, grippers are mounted to the periphery of a vacuum drum. At least one of the grippers is moved alternately toward and away from the other under the influence of a stationary cam as the drum rotates.

  • Patent number: 4922775
Abstract: Apparatus for cutting labels from a ribbon on which the labels are printed. The ribbon is fed into the apparatus along a vertical plane, for instance. There are vertically spaced apart knives adjacent the ribbon for cutting the upper and lower contours of the labels from the ribbon. The knives are caused to pivot toward the ribbon and to rise and fall under the influence of a cam that is shaped correspondingly with the desired contours. After the upper and lower contours are formed the ribbon is caused to change direction around a roller while at the same time the trim margin is deflected in another direction and drawn away. The ribbon, with labels still connected endwise is fed over a vacuum cylinder which has cutters at its periphery for separating the labels from a waste portion between them. The labels are removed from the vacuum cylinder and led to a label applying machine, as an example.

  • Patent number: 4920630
Abstract: A magnetic cylinder is formed by stacking ferromagnetic pole disks to which spacer rings are fastened. A circular array of tabs are pierced from the plane of the pole disks. the tabs are angulated relative to said plane and they diverge radially outwardly but their edges terminate on a circle concentric to the rim of the disk to provide a margin on which a concentric spacer ring is applied and is secured to the pole by pressing the tabs back toward the plane of the pole so they wedge tightly against the spacer ring. Permanent magnets are applied to the poles between adjacent pairs of tabs and they form parallel axially extending rows of magnets when the poles are stacked. At least one row is comprised of magnets which are stronger than the other to more forcefully hold down the edges of a die cutting plate of a printing plate which is wrapped around the magnetic cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4910064
Abstract: A non-woven web is provided that has conformability and drapability approaching that of woven fabrics. The non-woven web comprises a number of substantially parallel continuous filaments that are stabilized by melt blown fibers to create a coherent web. The continuous filaments are molecularly oriented, as by drawing before, during, or after deposition of the melt blown fibers. The melt blown fibers may be deposited on one or both sides of the continuous filaments, and two or more webs may be cross laid and laminated together. In one embodiment, the continuous filaments of a cross laid laminate are not bonded to each other. The continuous filaments are above to slide and slip relative to each other when the laminate is deformed, thereby decreasing stiffness and increasing drapability.

  • Patent number: 4899431
Abstract: A tool for setting threaded anchors, having an elongated body with a longitudinal bore and a threaded shaft received in the bore and projecting beyond both ends of the body to form a nut engaging end and an anchor engaging end. The anchors to be set include an anchor frustum having a longitudinal threaded bore, surrounded by a soft sleeve. A pinway is formed in the body communicating with the bore, and a retaining pin, in engagement with the threaded shaft, projects laterally through the pinway, for preventing relative rotational motion between the threaded shaft and the body while allowing relative longitudinal motion. A nut engages with the nut engaging end of the shaft. The method of setting such an anchor is to insert the anchor, attached to the end of the tool, into a hole where the anchor is to be set. The nut is then rotated with respect to the shaft, while preventing the rotation of the shaft and the body, so as to draw the frustum into the soft sleeve until the anchor is affixed within the hole.

  • Patent number: 4898271
Abstract: In apparatus for the signaling of a back-up in a container conveyor, the actual translation speed of all containers passing a measuring zone is determined separately with the aid of the measuring of the transit time and compared with the simultaneously measured momentary travel velocity of a hinge-belt-chain conveyor. If the translation speed of the containers is smaller by a determined amount than the travel velocity, or in a predetermined relationship, a jam or back-up signal is produced. The device has two photodetectors arranged at the same level with a fixed spacing in the direction of bottle transportation. A sensor registers the presence of a bottle in the measuring zone. A tachometer generator is attached to the drive shaft of the conveyor and provides an analog signal to a processor indicative of conveyor speed.

  • Patent number: 4877674
Abstract: A single piece non-wrinkling wrapper for bars of soap is made from a lamina of sheets of a flexible plastic film and a water absorbent paper. The film and paper are superimposed and bonded together along their margins by bands of adhesive. The exposed surface of the paper sheet is coated with a cold seal cohesive along the margins in register with the adhesive bands. When wrapped around a bar of soap, the cohesive and adhesive fall in the back seal and end seal areas of the soap, thereby double wrapping the bar with the film and paper sheets and with an air space between the sheets which prevents or minimizes the wrinkling of the outer wrap. The wrappers may be made on a continuous basis from a wide web of film and paper that are bonded together along a grid-like pattern by means of bands of adhesive. The web is severed along the midpoints of the adhesive to form the individual wrappers.
