Abstract: A cooling fluid is utilized to withdraw heat from a KOH treater. The passing of the cooling fluid in heat exchange with the KOH treater is controlled so as to maintain desired operating pressures and also substantially maximize heat transfer. Bypassing of the feed around the KOH treater is utilized only if sufficient cooling cannot be provided to prevent a temperature runaway.
Abstract: An automated method is provided for selectively separating resin pellets having a gel count below a specified maximum from pellets having a gel count above the specified maximum, while the pellets are flowing in a pneumatic conveyor. The separation is based on an essentially continuous measurement in which a laser beam is utilized to detect the number of gels in a film made from pellets withdrawn as a sample stream from the main pellet stream. In response to the gel count measurement, a control signal is established that is utilized to manipulate a diverter valve located in the pneumatic conveyor, which diverts plastic pellet flow between a preferred storage means storing pellets having a low gel count and a secondary storage means for storing pellets having a higher gel count.

Abstract: The flow rate of multiple fuel streams supplied to an incinerator are controlled so as to provide maximum temperature and heat release conditions in the incinerator that will allow complete combustion of hazardous waste fuel. In addition, a minimum temperature for the incinerator is maintained by manipulating the flow rate of an auxiliary fuel such as natural gas, that is also supplied to the incinerator. In use, a control signal for manipulating a waste fuel flow is selected as the lowest signal of signals representative of a maximum temperature for the incinerator, a maximum heat release rate for the incinerator, a maximum heat release rate for a particular waste fuel, a maximum pressure for the incinerator, and the combustion air available.
Abstract: A system for transmitting digital data employs an angle modulated carrier signal having constant amplitude and a limited spectrum. The system comprises an offset quadrature phase shift key (QPSK) modulator with a "tracking filter" phaselocked loop at the output of the QPSK modulator. The phaselocked loop has a voltage controlled oscillator which produces a constant amplitude carrier signal at the output of the loop, and also has a low pass loop filter which reduces the spectrum of the phase modulated carrier signal. Additional spectrum shaping is obtained by connecting L-R-C circuits to the low pass loop filter to eliminate predetermined frequency components from the output of the loop.
