  • Patent number: 6542264
Abstract: The present invention relates to an optical switch comprising a paraelectric photorefractive material, storing a hologram, possibly a latent hologram, whose reconstruction, or activation and reconstruction, is controllable by means of an applied electric field. The hologram may be formed by spatial modulation of the refractive index of the paraelectric photorefractive material, which arises from the quadratic electro-optic effect induced by the combined action of a spatially modulated space charge within the paraelectric photorefractive material and an external applied electric field. The present invention further relates to a switching network, such as a multistage network, for use in an optical communications system, incorporating at least one optical switch according to the invention.

  • Patent number: 6541181
Abstract: A positive acting, composition that can be heat-sensitive is presented, either coated on a lithographic base, or on a printing circuit board base, and comprises a water soluble heat-sensitive resin, a novel adhesion promoter and a radiation absorbing agent—a dye or a pigment. An excellent film forming polymer that comprises acetal units directly pendant from the polymer polyvinyl alcohol backbone may be the only binder resin, when other resins being optional. The solubility of the coated material in the areas exposed to near -IR laser radiation in mild alkaline developers becomes considerably higher, allowing to obtain high resolved patterns of the etch-resistant material on printing circuit boards or lithographic printing plates. The composition can be applied on the substrate from a liquid of laminated as a dry film. Sensitizers may be added to render the composition sensitive to radiation in a non-thermal sense.

  • Patent number: 6524260
Abstract: A contour mapping system useful as a spine analyzer includes a probe for application to a user's hand with the outer tip of at least one finger of the hand movable along the outer surface of the person's spine or other object whose contour is to be mapped. A position sensor carried by the probe is movable with the user's finger as the finger moves along the outer surface of the object. The system tracks and displays the movements of the position sensor as the probe is moved with the user's hand along the outer surface of the object. An ultrasonic transducer may be combined with the position sensor on the same probe and used to examine particular vertebrae, such as apex vertebrae, for rotation and/or deformation.

  • Patent number: 6519727
Abstract: A system and method including a simulation model with at least one flexible constraint on a data structure. The term “flexible constraint” indicates that the constraint is not limited to any one type of data structures, but instead can be used for any type of data structure. The preferred data structures include an object, a list of objects and a list of scalars. An object includes at least one data element and optionally a function for operating on the data element. The data element in turn could be a scalar or another object, for example. Preferably, the data structure is not a single scalar The method of the present invention determines the constraint which should be applied to data structure, and then applies the constraint during the test generation process.

  • Patent number: 6511487
Abstract: A suturing instrument includes a jaw and a pivotally mounted puncturer to be located on opposite sides of the tissue to be sutured. The suture is applied while the puncturer is in an open position on one side of the jaw, and the needle is then pivoted to a closed position through an opening in the jaw to pierce the tissue and to bring a portion of the suture to the opposite side of the jaw. At the opposite side of the jaw, a crochet head is actuated to engage the suture and to clamp it to the jaw as the puncturer is pivoted back to its open position.
