  • Patent number: 4533788
Abstract: This invention relates to the mechanical and environmental protection of cable joints, especially in power or other current-carrying cables. Disclosed is a recoverable sleeve which conforms closely to the cable joint, and a liner which bridges the joint and comprises a plurality of elongate elements assembled into a sheet. Flexible means is provided for holding the elements in a side-by-side arrangement and allowing the separation between the elements to vary to allow the liner to conform to the profile of the cable joint. Such flexible means may extend across the element and provide a water vapor barrier. Disclosed also is a method of protecting a cable joint utilizing the sleeve and liner. Where the cables to be jointed have metal armor, screen and/or shielding, the elements may be fabricated from metal or metal alloy and may then provide both armoring and a fault current path across the joint.

  • Patent number: 4463652
Abstract: An overcoatable machine-made braid may be formed at high-speeds and directly from producer's low-twist, single-yarns of continuous filament, inorganic materials by this process which treats the yarn prior to or during braiding with a lubricant liquid. The treatment enables such single-yarns, which tend to be brittle, to be processed on modern high-speed braiding machines without excessive fibrillation of the yarn, duplicating overcoatable braid constructions using costlier plied twisted-pair-yarns. Additionally, the treatment enables advantage to be taken of the intrinsically greater width to depth ratio of single-yarns compared to their braid-production equivalent twisted-pair-yarns. The resulting braids are lighter in weight, have a finer hand and can be more smoothly overcoated.

  • Patent number: 4415217
Abstract: A re-enterable cable jointing connector for electrical power distribution network cables and the method of using the connector to isolate cables physically and chemically one from another, the connector having at least two current carrying elements, each having at least three connection portions to which the individual cable cores may be attached, and having an electrically insulating body. The insulating body substantially surrounds the current carrying elements and extends at least up to the connection portions, thereby electrically insulating the current carrying elements from one another and interfacially isolating the cables from one another. Cables which are size, configuration or material incompatible may be jointed. Power cables may be optionally provided with in-line joints, branch joints or service connections by means of this compact connector.

  • Patent number: 4385515
Abstract: A versatile, calibrated cable connector crimping tool capable of crimping a plurality of cable connector sizes and a method of forming a calibrated crimp or a plurality of calibrated crimps in a cable splice connector positioned around a cable splice along a cable using said crimping tool are disclosed. The crimping tool comprises a first die member having a plurality of dies of select sizes, a second die member having a single die of select size, and a hinge joint connecting said die members and allowing them to be swung into engagement. One die member has a die or dies which are spatially fixed to define a fixed die member. The other die member has a moving means along which the die or dies may be moved into a position allowing engagement of the die members to define a movable die member.
