  • Patent number: 8096334
Abstract: A device and methods for harvesting submersed wood are provided. The device comprises, a machine operatively associated with a movable boom member rotatably attached. A telescoping stick having a first and second end is pivotally attached to the movable boom in a mid portion of the stick. The second end of the telescoping stick is attached to a wood gripping-cutting head. The telescoping stick is moveable to an operative position so that the second end extends below a plane defined by a surface the machine is located upon. When in use, the second end may extend into water located below the plane defined by the surface the machine is located upon. The device may be used on land, a dock, and a wharf adjacent a water edge, or the device may be located on a floating platform.

  • Patent number: 8067653
Abstract: Described herein are methods for producing fuels and solvents from fatty acid resources. In general, the pyrolysis products of fatty acids are extracted in order to remove residual fatty acids and produce very pure hydrocarbon compositions composed of alkanes and alkenes. The fatty acids removed from the extraction step can be further pyrolyzed to produce additional hydrocarbons or, in the alternative, the fatty acids can be isolated and used in other applications. Also disclosed herein are fuels and solvents produced by the methods described herein.

  • Patent number: 8020944
Abstract: A wheel comprising means for providing one or more protrusions in a ground-engaging surface of the wheel. In some embodiments, the wheel comprises a first hub, a tire mounted on the first hub, a second hub rotatable with respect to the first hub, and means for deforming the tire in a generally radial direction in response to relative rotation between the first and second hubs. The invention also provides a wheel cover comprising an outer surface having one or more protrusions and, when the cover is fitted to a wheel, the outer surface of the cover provides the ground-engaging surface of the wheel. The wheel and wheel cover of the invention are particularly suited for use with prams and similar vehicles in order to impart a rocking motion to the pram during use.

  • Patent number: 7897239
Abstract: Described herein are composites that are composed of a plurality of plies with a stiffening grid intimately embedded within the composite. The composite structures have the improved buckling performance characteristics of known isogrid and orthogrid composite structures and yet have a significantly higher damage tolerance that permits such structures to be used in the formation of aircraft and spacecraft designs. Also described herein are methods for making the composites.

  • Patent number: 7880623
Abstract: A multiple-link leak detector apparatus to be used on a floor or other substantially flat surface and in conjunction with an appliance, plumbing fixture or other potential water leak source. The leak detector apparatus includes a multiple-link sensor having two or more bodies linked together, each link body having at least two spaced apart sensor elements, and an electronics module associated with the sensor elements. The multiple-link sensor is shaped and dimensioned to rest atop the floor and can be positioned beside or around an appliance, plumbing fixture or other potential water leak source. The sensor elements extend longitudinally along the link body, wherein the sensor elements are operative to sense the presence of water on the floor. Finally, the electronics module is coupled to the sensor elements to trigger an alert in response to the presence of water on the floor.

  • Patent number: 7881889
Abstract: A computer-based system, computer-implemented method and computer program product facilitate determining energy cost savings in an energy-consuming facility, such as a commercial building, using an artificial intelligence model, for example a neural network model, that projects or estimates the amount of energy that would have been consumed by the facility but for the implementation of energy efficiency or conservation measures. Energy savings are represented by the difference between the estimate of energy that would have been consumed but for the measures and the actual amount of energy consumed by the facility under actual conditions during a time interval after the measures have been implemented.

  • Patent number: 7836836
Abstract: The present invention provides a cam follower bracket that is used in conjunction with textile tufting machines. Typically, the present invention is used with shifting tufting machines used to produce carpet and rugs. The cam follower bracket utilizes a floating lug design that self-regulates the amount of pressure that the cam follower bearings apply against the shifter block of the tufting machine. Because the bracket is able to self-regulate the pressure, the bracket generally lasts longer and does not need to be periodically monitored and/or tightened. Therefore, less user interaction is required and less machine downtime is needed when operating a tufting machine utilizing a bracket according to the present invention in comparison with known cam follower brackets.
