  • Patent number: 7286473
Abstract: A system and method for null packet replacement having a global scheduler (12) select data from a plurality of self-managed queues (14) to insert in to the data stream in place of null packets. The queues (14) managed by the global scheduler have rules that are private to each queue Q1, Q2, . . . QN. The global scheduler (12) has a set of rules (16) for prioritizing the queues (14). The global scheduler (12) knows the average data rate for each queue (14) and has a priority assigned to each queue (14). Rules for the global scheduler policy (16) are limited to the order of service for the queues. The present invention is advantageous in that the order of service may be changed at the global scheduler (12) without affecting the independent queues (14).

  • Patent number: 7283965
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for broadcasting high quality audio “studio direct” with the same digital information employed in the studio by the video producer with AC-3 digital audio signals for broadcast to integrated receiver decoders (IRD). The methods and apparatus permit proper handling of AC-3 data by switching signals to encoders in response to detection of the encoded signals representing compression of the data. Control over individual data bits such as copyright bits is maintained by determining the bit status, comparing it to a preferred status, changing the status if it does not comply with the preferred status, and reevaluating cyclical redundancy check value in each data packet to avoid disruption in the data transmission. In addition, the system includes an uplink device which automatically checks, logs and reports errors in Dolby Digital AC-3 signals by a monitor which employs a processor, a digital audio card and an SMPTE timecode reader.

  • Patent number: 7275163
Abstract: One or more embodiments of the invention provide a method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for providing access to digital services. Configuration information that has been transmitted asynchronously is received in a security component (that is configured to control access to the digital services). A hardware state machine (that comprises custom logic that is used to control access to the digital services) in the security component is then dynamically reconfigured based on the configuration information.

  • Patent number: 7263292
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a plurality of infrared devices (ICDs) is provided herein. A remote controller is used to generate an optical signal for controlling a plurality of ICDs. The optical signal generated by the remote controller is converted into an electrical signal by an infrared repeater device. An implementation of such a system includes a rotary mechanical switch to direct the electrical signal generated by the infrared repeater device to a light emitting diode (LED) located near one of the plurality of ICDs. The LED converts the electrical signal into an optical signal and re-transmits the optical signal to the one of the plurality of ICDs. The system allows controlling the plurality of ICDs located in a remote location without having the user commute closer to such ICDs.

  • Patent number: 7237174
Abstract: An approach is provided for encoding short frame length Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes. An encoder generates a LDPC code having an outer Bose Chaudhuri Hocquenghem (BCH) code. Structure is imposed on the LDPC codes by restricting portion part of the parity check matrix to be lower triangular and/or satisfying other requirements such that the communication between bit nodes and check nodes of the decoder is simplified. Further, a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) encoder is supplied to encode the input signal according to a CRC code. This approach has particular application in digital video broadcast services over satellite.

  • Patent number: 7234098
Abstract: An approach is provided for generating Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes. An LDPC encoder generates a LDPC code with an outer Bose Chaudhuri Hocquenghem (BCH) code. For a rate 3/5 code, the approach provides a degree profile that yields reduced memory requirements for storage of the edge values without significantly affecting the performance with respect to an “unmodified” rate 3/5 code. The relevant parameters for the reduced memory LDPC codes are as follows: q=72, nldpc=64800, kldpc=nBCH=38880, kBCH=38688. The above approach has particular application in digital video broadcast services over satellite.

  • Patent number: 7230480
Abstract: A method, apparatus, article of manufacture, and a memory structure provide the ability to determine an input operating point and an output operating point on a non-linear traveling wave tube amplifier (TWTA). The non-linearity of the TWTA is measured. An input roots mean-square (RMS) value of an input signal used to measure the non-linearity of the TWTA is computed. The RMS value identifies an input operating point of the measured non-linearity of the TWTA. Lastly, an output operating point is obtained.

  • Patent number: 7215954
Abstract: A mobile wireless communications system including a plurality of individual transponding nodes of various types, all in communication with a central processing hub. A local user signal is processed by the central processing hub and radiated through multiple paths to a plurality of the plurality of individual transponding platforms simultaneously. The signal is then re-radiated by each of the plurality of the plurality of individual transponding platforms to a mobile terminal that receives the re-radiated signal from the plurality of the plurality of individual transponding platforms coherently and in phase. The number of transponders and codes used to transmit each user signal can be readily adapted to user requirements. Additionally, each user is assigned a profit value by the central processing hub depending upon certain user characteristics. The assigned user profit value allows the total system utility/profitability to be maximized.
