Abstract: Carbon nanostructures for use as catalyst supports in hydrogen fuel cells are produced by mixing a carbon material with at least one transition metal such as iron and cobalt, subjecting the mixture thus produced to mechanical grinding, e.g. ball milling in a hydrogen atmosphere for a time sufficient for hydrogen to be absorbed into the mixture, and heating the mixture in an inert atmosphere at a temperature sufficient to crystallize at least one of the carbon material and carbide nanocrystals.

Abstract: A tree stand includes a planar load supporting platform having an inner end for abutting a tree trunk, a pair of two-section arms pivotally connected to sides of the platform for rotation between positions against such platform sides and erect positions in which they define armrests, a belt having a pair of ends slidable in said arms for forming a loop around a tree trunk to hold the stand on the tree, and a latch on the arms for locking the belt in the arms.
Abstract: A nutrition indicator device includes a plurality of discs mounted on a pin, some of the discs being removable from the pin. Each side of each disc has an empty circular central area, and radially extending rows of numerical nutritional values for foods and the names of foods radially outwardly of such values. An opaque mask with a radially extending window is mounted on the pin for displaying the name of a single food and the nutritional values for a serving of the food when a disc below the mask is rotated to align a food name with the window.
Abstract: Relatively accurate gravimetric analysis of airborne particulate matter in a sample is achieved by making gravimetric measurements of the sample on a microbalance in a closed chamber, continuously electronically monitoring air pressure, humidity and temperature in the chamber, continuously controlling humidity and temperature in the chamber, and combining the gravimetric measurement with measurements of air pressure, humidity and temperature in the chamber to make a buoyancy corrected determination of the mass of the particulate matter.

Abstract: A needleless injector includes a barrel for receiving an injectable liquid, a nozzle closing one end of the barrel containing an injection orifice, and a plunger and piston combination in the barrel. A valve admits gas under pressure into the barrel behind the piston. A trigger opens the valve to cause the piston to move against the plunger, and a magnet retains the piston in a rest position in the barrel until acted upon by the gas under sufficient pressure to cause the piston and plunger to move to an extended, discharge position.
Abstract: A steerable wheelbarrow includes a pair of handles rotatably connected to the rear end of the frame of the wheelbarrow for rotation around a horizontal axis, and a pair of linkages connecting the handles to L-shaped, wheel carrying axles, which are interconnected by a separate linkage, whereby rotation of the handles in opposite directions around the horizontal axis results in rotation of the axles around parallel, vertical axes to turn the wheelbarrow. A stop mechanism limits turning of the wheels to decrease the likelihood of tipping during turning.
Abstract: A sensor for detecting the radio-luminescence created by radioactive sources includes a telescope, a plurality of UV sensitive cameras, and an optical system in the optical path of the telescope for directing images to the cameras. The cameras simultaneously obtain images from a plurality of spectral bands covering strong transitions of N2 molecule created by the radioactive source and at least one spectral band containing very little transition strength (a background band). The background image is used to assess the background level for the other spectral bands. The images are then fused digitally to create one image of the radio-luminescence.

Abstract: Microbolometers with regionally thinned microbridges are produced by depositing a thin film (0.6 ?m) of silicon nitride on a silicon substrate, forming microbridges on the substrate, etching the thin film to define windows in a pixel area, thinning the windows, releasing the silicon nitride, depositing a conductive YBaCuO film on the bridges, depositing a conductive film (Au) on the YBaCuO film, and removing selected areas of the YBaCuO and conductive films.

Abstract: A tree stand includes a platform having a tree engaging end; a pair of hollow support arms pivotally connected to the sides of the platform; a belt having ends slidable in the support arms for forming a loop around a tree trunk to connect the platform to the tree; latches on the arms for locking the ends of the belt in position; and a bungee cord or spring connecting one end of the belt to the platform or support arms, whereby when one latch is released the belt is pulled into one arm to shorten the loop around the tree.
Abstract: Metal catalyst particles are deposited on carbon nanotubes by preparing a silane solution of a metal catalyst salt, e.g. platinum or ruthenium chloride, immersing an electrically conducting substrate carrying nanotubes in the silane solution to yield a composite structure of substrate, nanotubes and catalyst, and reducing the composite structure to yield a composite of substrate, carbon nanotubes and metallic catalyst particles.

Abstract: Gold nanoparticles having a particle size of 4-15 nM are synthesized by the reduction of hydrogen tetrachloroaurate (III) trihydrate using a suitable reducing agent such as sodium citrate in the presence of unmodified ?, ? or ?-cyclodextrin. The particle size is dependent upon the type and concentration of cyclodextrin and the reducing agent concentration. Gold nanoparticles having a particle size of 2-4 nM are produced by the reduction of hydrogen tetrachloroaurate (III) trihydrate using sodium borohydride in the presence of cyclodextrins.
