Abstract: Principal components of paprika, red pepper, pungent chili, or other plants of the genus Capsicum containing carotenoid pigments are simultaneously extracted and concentrated with an edible solvent in a series of mixing and high temperature and pressure mechanical pressing steps using edible solvent and a countercurrent extraction procedure. The extract containing the carotenoid pigments may be hydrated and then centrifuged to remove fine particulate solids and gums. A solution having several times the concentration of the carotenoid pigments and other flavor and aroma components of the starting raw material is obtained. The residual press solids may be cooled and hydrated following the last pressing operation.

Abstract: The tendency of an orally-ingestible dietary fiber composition to cause excessive flatulence upon oral administration is reduced considerably by the incorporation therein, in addition to other dietary fiber components, a flatulence-reducing amount of chitosan, or by administering such a flatulence-reducing amount of chitosan concurrently with the other dietary fiber components, illustratively the usual antihyperlipidemic pharmaceutical dietary fiber composition or dietary supplement composition. A preferred dietary fiber composition according to the invention incorporates a plurality of dietary fiber components other than chitosan, preferably acacia gum, pectin, and guar gum, together with a flatulence-reducing amount of chitosan.

Abstract: The invention relates to novel essentially anhydrous oily bath and shower compositions containing a combination of fatty oil and/or fatty or waxy apolar substance, oil-soluble surfactant, and vesicle-forming lipid and, if desired, a cosmetically- or balneologically-active ingredient. When poured into or simply admixed with water, these formulations immediately and automatically, generate dispersed vesicles or liposomes. They exhibit an immediate as well as a prolonged or depot effect, can be used alone or added to or together with existing bath or shower formulations, and are especially suited for use in connection with or as additives to full, partial, or shower baths.

Abstract: A procedure for carrying out T cell differentiation of CD34+ stem cells in an in vitro culture of thymic epithelial fragments whereby the differentiated T cells achieve full immunocompetence. The invention also includes the procedure for differentiation of stem cells from HIV seropositive individuals or genetically modified stem cells. The invention broadly relates to the culture of cultured thymic epithelial fragments and provides procedures for verifying true immunocompetence of the resulting T cells and for analyzing the effects of various compounds on the differentiation process. The invention also comprises several novel applications for utilizing the procedure of the invention, including grafting fortified cultured thymic epithelial fragments and infusing immunocompetent T cells into patients with compromised immune systems.

Abstract: A water-dispersible lipidic hop extract composition, comprising at least 10% by weight of free fatty acid substances derived from hops, is useful to increase the utilization of the hop aroma and flavor components. It may be produced by treatment of an extract of hops with an excess of alkali. The starting hop extract, made conventionally as by extraction with organic solvent or carbon dioxide, preferably has alpha, isoalpha, and beta hop acids removed before treatment with excess alkali. A cosolvent, such as a lower alkanol, polyol, or wetting agent, heat, or high shear may be used to improve mixing of the lipidic organic phase of the hop extract with the excess alkali. The water-dispersible lipidic hop extract imparts an enhanced hop aroma and flavor upon addition to the wort at some point during the brewing process between boiling and the beginning of fermentation. A beer incorporating the dispersible lipidic hop extract has a stronger hop aroma and flavor than beer incorporating the usual hop extract.
