  • Patent number: 7285511
Abstract: A method of modifying a zeolite catalyst to increase para-xylene selectivity of the zeolite catalyst in toluene methylation reactions is provided. The method includes forming a slurry of a ZSM-5-type zeolite and an aqueous solution of a phosphorus compound. Water is removed from the slurry to provide a non-steamed, phosphorus treated ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst without deposition of phosphorus onto the catalyst by organophosphorus vapor deposition. The resulting non-steamed, phosphorus treated ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst has a pore volume of from 0.2 ml/g or less and provides greater than 80% para-xylene selectivity of mixed xylenes when used in toluene methylation.

  • Patent number: 7104321
Abstract: A gas/liquid separator assembly for use in a tubing string located in a borehole of a well is provided. The separator assembly includes a tubular outer conduit having a lower inlet for introducing gas and liquids within the interior of the outer conduit. The outer conduit has an upper outlet to allow fluids to pass to the exterior of the outer conduit. A tubular inner conduit is disposed within the interior of the outer conduit. The inner conduit has a flow passage and an inlet for introducing liquids discharged from the outer conduit into the flow passage. The inner and outer conduits are rigidly joined together at a first end. An adaptor engages the inner and outer conduits at a second end to prevent lateral movement of the second end of the inner conduit within the outer conduit, while allowing relative longitudinal movement of the outer and inner conduits from longitudinal compression or tension forces applied to the outer conduit.

  • Patent number: 7105713
Abstract: A method of modifying a ZSM-5-type zeolite catalyst to increase selectivity of the catalyst for para-isomers in aromatic alkylation reactions is provided. The method includes contacting a ZSM-5-type zeolite catalyst with a fluoride-containing compound. The fluoride-containing zeolite catalyst can be used in aromatic alkylation to provide di-alkyl aromatic products. A method of preparing a xylene product is also accomplished by providing a fluoride-treated ZSM-5-type zeolite catalyst within a reactor. The fluoride-treated ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst is contacted with a toluene/methanol feed under reaction conditions conditions suitable for toluene methylation to form a xylene product containing at least 50% para-xylene by total mixed xylenes.

  • Patent number: 7084318
Abstract: A method of preparing a xylene product is carried out in a reactor containing a phosphorus-treated ZSM-5-type zeolite catalyst. The method includes initiating a unique start-up of a toluene methylation reaction by contacting the catalyst with a toluene/methanol feed and a cofeed of hydrogen introduced into the reactor at certain start-up conditions. By utilizing the start-up conditions high selectivity for p-xylene can be achieved while providing stable catalytic activity over extended periods.

  • Patent number: 7060644
Abstract: A catalyst for use in aromatic alkylation, such as toluene alkylation with methanol, is comprised of a zeolite with pore size from about 5.0 to about 7.0 ? containing a hydrogenating metal. The catalyst may be used in preparing an alkyl aromatic product by providing the catalyst within a reactor. The catalyst may be contacted with an aromatic hydrocarbon and an alkylating agent in the presence of hydrogen under reaction conditions suitable for aromatic alkylation. The catalyst may also be treated to further increase its stability. This is accomplished by heating the hydrogenating metal loaded zeolite catalyst in the presence of a reducing agent prior to use in an aromatic alkylation reaction to a temperature of from about 400° C. to about 500 ° C. for about 0.5 to about 10 hours.

  • Patent number: 6890425
Abstract: A method of refining a petroleum product to remove aromatics and to separate paraffinic oils and waxes is provided. The method involves the utilization of phase equilibria wherein crystallized or solidified waxes, normally present in the petroleum product, are used to remove oils from a liquid solvent phase containing dissolved aromatics present in the unrefined petroleum product. The wax containing the oils is separated from the aromatic-containing solvent and is further processed to separate the waxes and oils. For petroleum products containing little, if any, wax, additional wax may be added and recycled back for further use in removing oils from the petroleum product. The method has particular application in preparing lubricating oils having a high viscosity index, where the presence of aromatics and wax can be detrimental.

  • Patent number: 6881326
Abstract: A process where the need to circulate hydrogen through the catalyst is eliminated. This is accomplished by mixing and/or flashing the hydrogen and the oil to be treated in the presence of a solvent or diluent in which the hydrogen solubility is “high” relative to the oil feed. The type and amount of diluent added, as well as the reactor conditions, can be set so that all of the hydrogen required in the hydroprocessing reactions is available in solution. The oil/diluent/hydrogen solution can then be fed to a plug flow reactor packed with catalyst where the oil and hydrogen react. No additional hydrogen is required, therefore, hydrogen recirculation is avoided and trickle bed operation of the reactor is avoided. Therefore, the large trickle bed reactors can be replaced by much smaller tubular reactor.
