  • Patent number: 4913383
Abstract: An apparatus for installing, at the front end of an instrument panel, an aircraft instrument having a rectangular chassis. The installation occurs by advancing a screw through a corner adaptor, into the instrument. The adaptors are attached to the periphery of a rectangular hole in the instrument panel, after the instrument has been inserted therethrough, so as to create an octagonal hole as is typically found in instrument panels. The corner adaptors are made up of a first plate and a second plate having a spacer region which is slightly narrower than the thickness of the instrument panel. When a screw is inserted through the first plate and the second plate, they are held together and adhere to the instrument panel which is inserted therein.

  • Patent number: 4910525
Abstract: There is disclosed a system and technique for providing an audio verification of Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver signal acquisition. In a GPS receiver, the correlated output of the GPS signal is generally represented as a data modified CW signal with a Doppler component caused by the movement of a GPS satellite with respect to the receiver. Due to the Doppler component, this signal output provides a signature which is indicative of the particular satellite from which the signal is being received. The signal output is mixed with a local oscillator to produce a beat frequency in the audio band which may be filtered and coupled to an audio amplifier to produce an audio tone. The presence of the audio tone indicates the acquisition of a selected satellite signal and its audio frequency is indicative of the particular satellite signal being received.

  • Patent number: 4896205
Abstract: A Compact Reduced Parasitic Resonant Frequency Pulsed Power Source at Microwave Frequencies is disclosed which uses a series of stacked IMPATT diodes with thick metallic heat sinks interposed between each of the IMPATT diodes with the effective heat sink of each heat sink being roughly equivalent to the diode radius in length. The effective heat sink length is matched through the disclosed analysis to the effective heat sink of the base heat sink which is located at the bottom of the stack of IMPATT diodes. The diodes are operated in a pulsed fashion and the effective heat sink length is matched to the effective heat sink of the base heat sink that the temperature of the stacked IMPATT diodes track together in time.

  • Patent number: 4884077
Abstract: A method in circuit for controlling the temperature of IMPATT diodes during pulsed operations: first, by providing a switch of the RF energy produced by the IMPATT for switching the IMPATT output from an antenna to an internal load, the switch being a pin diode switch; secondly, switching the output of a pair of IMPATT diodes from an antenna to an internal load by providing a selective phase shifter for shifting the phase of the injection signal to one of the IMPATT diodes and further providing a hybrid coupler at the output ends of the IMPATT diodes and disposed between the antenna and the internal load; thirdly, providing a pair of injection signal sources which operate on different frequencies and alternately switching the separate injection sources with the input end of an RF producing IMPATT diode; and fourthly, providing a positive biased pre-heat current pulse to the RF producing IMPATT.

  • Patent number: 4838173
Abstract: An improved strain sensor is disclosed utilizing a linear variable displacement transducer (LVDT) to precisely output the linear strain over a structural member. The LVDT is mounted utilizing a position apparatus having a similar coefficient of thermal expansion as the structural member, and effectively integrates the strain over the entire longitudinal dimension of the member by precisely measuring displacement under load. This assembly is readily incorporated in locomotive couplers and crane structures having a void or hollow coinciding with the neutral bending axis of the member being tested, as well as over relatively large spans, in pairs or singly, having bending moments present. A locomotive control system for increasing the strain on a locomotive coupler by monitoring the draw bar force with an associated generator speed and maximizing the draw bar force by manipulating the generator speed.

  • Patent number: 4805828
Abstract: A method and apparatus for manufacture and repair of thermally durable surface mounted device printed wiring assemblies which includes a printed wiring assembly having surface mounted devices thereon, which are attached to said wiring assembly by a quenched or rapidly soldified soldier joint. A method for manufacture and repair of such printed wiring assemblies is to heat the TWAs with SMDs thereon, above the solder melting temperature, and then expose the solder to a fluid below the solder melting temperature which is capable of absorbing heat rapidly from the solder. The intermediate solder joint is thereby rapidly solidified to achieve the advantages of the investive method.
