Patent number: 6850948Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for compressing textual documents encoded using a tag-based markup language, such as XML or SGML documents, in a manner that allows a compressed document to be processed without decompression. A document is compressed using a standard compression algorithm that is applied only to the data elements of the document. The tag elements of the XML document that impose the hierarchical structure on the data elements are not compressed. The hierarchical relationship of the data elements can be ascertained from the compressed document. A user can thereafter selectively decompress desired portions of the document, without decompressing the entire document. An identification of the employed compression technique can be inserted into a root node tag element of the XML document or into an additional tag element pair that is inserted into the XML document.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2000Date of Patent: February 1, 2005Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventor: Raymond Krasinski

Patent number: 6812846Abstract: Cameras and image processing techniques are applied to the problem of spill detection. Fixed background data may be removed using a technique based on image subtraction. The remainder of one or more images may be segmented. The segments may then be tested to identify and remove from further analysis segments corresponding to non-spill foreground objects, for example by forming luminance and/or chrominance profiles to detect the presence of a high rate of specular albido that would be associated with a wet spill. Further testing may be done, for example by determining if a segment corresponds to a planar object lying in the plane of the floor using planar projection transforms and multiple cameras. If a segment is likely to indicate a spill, a notification may be generated.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2001Date of Patent: November 2, 2004Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventors: Srinivas Gutta, Vasanth Philomin

Patent number: 6795027Abstract: An antenna arrangement (300) comprises a ground conductor (102) on which is mounted an antenna (304). The antenna is small relative to a wavelength at operational frequencies of the antenna arrangement (300) and the dimensions of the antenna (304) are selected so that the combined impedance of the antenna (304) and ground conductor (102) is suitable for driving via a conventional matching circuit. This condition is met when the bandwidth of the arrangement is dominated by that of the antenna and ground conductor, rather than that of the matching circuit. In one embodiment the antenna is a triangular conducting element which is considerably wider than its height, the length being sufficient to to give a reasonable resistance and the width being sufficient to reduce the reactance to a level that can reasonably be matched.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2002Date of Patent: September 21, 2004Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventor: Kevin R. Patent number: 6766374Abstract: When a person requests access to a chat session, the time of the request is used to determine which chat room the person is placed. Other parameters are used to determine the surrounding factors, or context, within which the person initiated the request, such as the particular television program that the person was watching at the time of the request. By forming chat rooms based on the time of entry and the context in which the request is made, the chat rooms are likely to contain people with a common topic to discuss, such as the television news story being broadcast at that time. These time-of-entry chat rooms can also be structured to be of limited duration, obviating the overhead burden of deleting topic-specific chat rooms when the topic ceases to be of interest.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2002Date of Patent: July 20, 2004Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventors: Karen I. Patent number: 6751345Abstract: A method and apparatus to refine object boundaries of computer determined scene objects extracted from stereoscopic images is disclosed. In the method disclosed, a refinement of object boundaries is performed by altering the pixel combinations used to create scene objects. In this method, each pixel in a one image is re-combined with alternative pixels in a second image and a new disparity measure is determined for each of the re-matched pixel combinations. When the new disparity measure remains in dynamically specified boundaries the re-matched pixel combination is retained, thus, replacing a previous matched pixel combination. When the new disparity measure falls outside specified boundaries, a previous re-matched combination is retained. The process of altering pixel combinations by re-matching pixels between the stereoscopic images continues for each pixel of the combined image.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2001Date of Patent: June 15, 2004Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventor: Tomas Brodsky
