  • Patent number: 4857457
Abstract: The disaccharide .beta.-D-Gal (1->>3)-D-GalNAc, which specifically binds with peanut agglutinin (PNA) or oxidized by galactose oxidase, has been discovered in the colorectal mucus of patients with cancer or precancer. Because of the presence of .beta.-D-Gal-(1>>3)-D-GalNAc also on neuraminidase treated erythrocytes of the ABO type, their competitive binding with PNA has been exploited to develop a hemagglutination inhibition assay. Additional methods of simple detection of this disaccharide include a latex agglutination test, enzyme-avidin-biotinylated PNA, and a galactose oxidase strip test. This rapid, simple and inexpensive assay is designed to test the presence of .beta.-D-Gal-(1>>3)-D-GalNAc in large intestine mucus obtained by routine digital-rectal examination and has the potential for screening populations for large intestinal carcinomas.

  • Patent number: 4794080
Abstract: A simultaneous sequential anaerobic fermentation process for the in vitro production of propionic and acetic acids is disclosed. The process comprises employing an obligatory two-component co-culture which maintains a relatively constant ratio of species populations over multiple passages. A first co-culture component is a Lactobacillus or Streptococcus which homofermentatively converts the hexose to lactic acid. A second microorganism in the co-culture is a Veillonella which is metabolically incapable of assimillating the hexose and converts the lactic acid product to propionic and acetic acids. The co-culture is inoculated into a nutrient growth feedstock such as whole whey or a clarified dairy whey lactose permeate which contains a metabolizable source of a hexose such as glucose, lactose or sucrose.

  • Patent number: 4769254
Abstract: A water-soluble levan having a weight average molecular weight of about 10,000-40 million, preferably about 5-25 million and especially about 10-20 million which stabilizes a bovine serum albumin colloid having index (EAI) of about 3-100 determined according to the formula EAI=2T/OC wherein T is turbidity measured at 500 nm, C is the weight of emulsified protein per unit volume of the aqueous phase, and O is the volume fraction of a dispersed oil phase is produced by fermenting a nutrient growth medium feedstock having a carbon source consisting essentially of an assimilable sugar selected from the group consisting of sucrose, raffinose, or a mixture thereof with a microorganism capable of converting at least 50%. of the fructose value of the sugar to said levan under nutrient growth conditions which enhance levan production while suppressing ethanol production. It is useful as a colloid stabilizing agent, particularly with foods, beverages, pharmaceuticals, dentifrices, and cosmetics.

  • Patent number: 4555888
Abstract: A method is disclosed for forming reinforced concrete structural panels wherein one or more preformed elongated structural ribs are inverted and placed horizontally into a form for casting a generally flat concrete structural slab. The structural ribs have joiners projecting downward into the form and the concrete slab which is cast in the form so that the joiners connect the reinforced ribs with the slab. In one embodiment of the invention a plurality of reinforced elongated ribs are disposed parallel to one another in the form and additional reinforcing members placed in the form perpendicular to the ends of the ribs to form a box-like structure. A plurality of these reinforced structural panels can be connected together by stringers run through the end members.

  • Patent number: 4547226
Abstract: The sugar content of citrus press liquor is enhanced by separating citrus solids, extracting fructose, glucose, and sucrose from the solids, and recombining the aqueous extract to increase the sugar content thereof. By inversion of the sucrose present in the sugar-enhanced press liquor, a high fructose syrup can be readily obtained which is indistinguishable from high fructose corn syrup. When separation is effected by centrifugation, a biocidally active colloidal phase is formed from which citrus terpenes and limonene can be extracted, resulting in a press liquor suitable for fermentation. The solid residue remaining after extraction can also be recycled with the remaining press cake.

  • Patent number: 4536207
Abstract: A chitin-protein complex is prepared from chitin-containing biological waste material such as crustacean shells. The complex is different from both chitin and chitosan, and has useful nematostatic and nematocidal activity for agricultural and horticultural applications by admixing nematocidally effective amounts with a plant growth medium. The complex also provides a source of nitrogen in slow-release form, making it particularly suitable for combination with fertilizers, soil conditioners, etc.
