  • Patent number: 5680103
Abstract: A walk-through metal detection system with split field generation coils excited in phase to generate an electromagnetic field having a substantially uniform vertical field density. A plurality of vertically distributed receiver coils are also provided, each receiver coil connected to a separate detector circuit for detecting disturbances in the generated field caused by the presence of metal objects. The signals are processed to generate an output signal indicative of the individual metal mass (or masses) of objects detected within the generated electromagnetic field. The output signal is compared to a threshold signal, and if greater than the threshold signal, then a metal object is presumed to be present within the electromagnetic field and an alarm is sounded. A remote control may be used by an operator to adjust the threshold signals. Additional processing of the detector circuit outputs differentiates between a single object of large metal mass and multiple objects of combined metal mass.

  • Patent number: 5678219
Abstract: An RF antenna and an associated receiver are proximately located in an integrated antenna/receiver unit thereby eliminating the need for baluns and inter-component cabling characteristic of prior designs. Integration of the receiver with the antenna provides for improved sensitivity as the need for utilizing signal dissipating and noise introducing cables and baluns to transmit the signal received by the antenna to the receiver is eliminated. Direct coupling of the antenna and receiver on a single gallium arsenide integrated circuit maintains balanced impedance from the antenna to the receiver.

  • Patent number: 5664432
Abstract: A vehicle air conditioning condenser includes two tubular members, one on each end of the condenser, for conducting refrigerant to the cooling tubes. A connector block, having a half cylindrical indentation extending from the top of the block to the bottom of the block, is affixed to one of the tubular members of the condenser. The internal radius of curvature of the half cylindrical indentation is substantially the same as the external radius of curvature of the tubular member of the condenser to which the tubular block is attached. The connector block contains a circular first opening of predetermined size with female threads for receiving and securing a connector fitting. Refrigerant passes from an inlet tube assembly, through the connector fitting, into the connector block, through a tubular passage way, into the tubular member and into the cooling tubes.

  • Patent number: 5665913
Abstract: A method and apparatus for evaluation and inspection of a composite-repaired structure generates a frequency-varying electrical signal to test and evaluate the composite-repaired area. The electrical signal is converted into a mechanical signal and transmitted through the composite-repaired area of the structure. The transmitted mechanical signal is received and converted into an electrical signal for processing. The processed signal is compared with a baseline reference signal to determine whether the composite-repaired area is damaged or undamaged. The baseline reference signal is obtained at the time of the composite repair of the structure.

  • Patent number: 5664109
Abstract: A central medical record repository for a managed health care organization accepts and stores medical record documents in any format from medical service providers. The repository then identifies the document using information automatically extracted from the document and stores the extracted data in a document database. The repository links the document to a patient by extracting from the document demographic data identifying the patient and matching it to data stored in a patient database. Data is extracted automatically from medical records containing "unstructured" or free-form text by identifying conventional organization components in the text and is organized by executing rules that extract data with the aid of such information. Documents for a patient are retrieved by identifying the patient using demographic data.

  • Patent number: 5659396
Abstract: Apparatus and method for detection of leading and trailing edges of objects moving along a defined path. A light radiation source directs a light beam toward a beamspot on the path. Light reflected from the beamspot is received by two light sensors. An edge of an object moving along the defined path substantially blocks the light from being received by one light sensor. Circuitry is provided for distinguishing the difference in reflected light received at each light sensor and determining whether the leading edge or trailing edge of the object is blocking the reflected light. Length of detections (leading and trailing edges) and time interval between the detections of the leading and trailing edge are processed to provide information about the object such as height of the leading and trailing edges of the object and length of the object. Further processing of leading and trailing edge detections can detect overlapped objects having relatively uniform surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5655667
Abstract: A method and apparatus for separating, feeding and sorting stacked products utilizes a computer controlled conveyor transport path. The transport path includes infeed, separating and output sections. The infeed section includes an infeed conveyor and feed roller to regulate downstream movement into the separating section. The separating section includes a plurality of individually and selectively controlled friction feeder rolls arranged on a laterally tilted incline plane. The method and apparatus includes sensors along the separating section for determining position and relative movement of products. Through computer control, individual feeder rolls or sets of feeder rolls on the inclined plane are selectively energized to separate underlying products from stacked overlying or overlapping products. The foregoing process is repeated until all products in a stack have been separated into individual units.

  • Patent number: 5642264
Abstract: A chassis having a unique configuration is provided along with card guide assemblies having predefined configuration types for selective installation in the chassis. The guide assemblies, when installed within the chassis, enable circuit cards having varying standard dimensions to be mounted and secured within the chassis regardless of slot location. A first type of card guide assembly is mounted at the end of a plurality of slot locations a predetermined first standard distance apart to enable cards having a first length and one of a number of depths to be installed. A second type card guide assembly is mounted between the opposed first card guide assemblies at any slot location a second predetermined standard distance from one of the first guide assemblies to form a slot partition and enable the installation of cards having a second length shorter than the first length and one of the number of depths.

  • Patent number: 5640695
Abstract: The present invention discloses an apparatus for minimizing the effects of destructive interference caused by multipath fading. An amplitude sensing module receives IF signals from a plurality of receivers and generates high speed voltage signals proportional to the logarithm of the amplitude of each of the IF signals. An analog logic module compares the high speed signals to each other to determine the high speed voltage signal having the greater level and actuates a switch to select the audio output from the receiver having the high speed signal with the higher voltage level. The switched audio output of the analog logic module is filtered by an output filter module to remove switching transients generated within the analog logic module. The filter module is programmable to accommodate various IF bandwidths and response characteristics.

  • Patent number: RE35643
Abstract: An electrical power source, either AC or DC, lead acid battery rejuvenator and charger circuit switchable between rejuvenator and charger modes of operation. For the rejuvenator mode of operation a rejuvenator pulse signal generating circuit supplies voltage in the form of fast rise voltage pulses peaking at a voltage necessary to cause battery plate saturation that is 1:1 to 1:3 times the theoretical battery cell voltage. This is accomplished by use of very short duration pulses in the order of 5 micro seconds or less time width wise with extremely fast rise time in the order of 5 mega volts per second rise time with these pulses occurring in approximately the 2,000 to 10,000 times per second frequency range.
