  • Patent number: 4240209
Abstract: A grain dryer employs an auger assembly featuring a hollow auger shaft through which hot water is circulated to heat the auger flighting and thus the grain. The water emerging from the auger shaft is then used to heat atmospheric air supplied by a blower, which air is then injected into the grain through a set of ports along the auger housing. The injected air entrains moisture expelled from the grain by the hot auger and exits from the auger housing through another set of ports along the latter.

  • Patent number: 4237652
Abstract: A method of breeding yellow dent hybrid seed corn by causing pollination of the silks of an ear other than the top ear of the corn plant with the resulting fertilization of the lower ear. The method is accomplished by causing the ear shoot at the top of the plant to abort before the silks emerge from that shoot, and then allowing a lower ear to produce silks and receive pollen from the male seed parent. Fertilization of the second or lower ear is then accomplished resulting in a corn plant that provides seed (F.sub.1) which will in turn produce a higher yield in the farmer's field. (F is the designation of generations of plants, F.sub.1 being the first filial generation.

  • Patent number: 4223674
Abstract: An implant gun for depositing pellets or the like subcutaneously. The gun includes a hollow needle through which a number of pellets are dispensed from a cartridge that is positioned either inside the needle or in an ante-chamber. The action of the gun is such that the pellets are gently deposited in the tissue as the needle is withdrawn from the cavity formed in the tissue at the time the needle was inserted. This technique practically eliminates any breaking of the fragile pellets and reduces the trauma of their insertion into the tissue. The implant gun also includes a unique ram activating mechanism that frees one of the hands of the operator so that the implanting procedure can be conducted without assistance. The implant gun is also easily adapted for use in implanting single items other than pellets, such as identification tags for animals.

  • Patent number: 4194453
Abstract: A safe deposit box nest includes an outer housing into which are assembled a number of sheet metal partitions and shelves to form compartments. In order to eliminate the need for individually fitting each compartment door, each such door is hinged to and strikes against posts formed by extruded members such as aluminum attached to the front of the partitions. To the same end the forward edges of the shelves are disposed between the posts and doors and are folded rearwardly upon themselves and compressd to form shelf edge portions of uniform thickness. Finally, the nest is constructed in a manner which reduces welding to a minimum and helps insure accurate and uniform compartment openings to which the doors are applied.

  • Patent number: 4177628
Abstract: An attachment for a conventional level-land grain combine which allows the combine to be operated and the grain to be harvested on the slopes of hillsides without excessive buildup of the grain on the low side of the machine. The attachment includes movable doors which vary the size of the opening between the gathering and cutting unit and the feeding and separating unit. By partially closing off the opening on the low side of the machine, more of the grain is fed to the high side thus providing for more even distribution of the grain into the threshing and separating units. Movement of the doors is remotely controlled by the operator according to the slope of the hillside on which the machine is operating.
