  • Patent number: 6402076
Abstract: A system and method is provided for developing speed and rotation count profiles for controlling the spindle drive on a towel winder system for winding rolls of paper, such as tissue or towel. The system and method monitors accumulated paper sheet length metered onto the winding spindle to control desired sheet count and finished roll dimension data. The system and method utilizes the accumulated paper sheet length and the desired finished roll data to calculate an instantaneous diameter. The instantaneous diameter calculation includes determining an effective thickness of the roll based on two forms of calculating finished roll cross-sectional area. The system and method also includes monitoring the actual line surface speed. The instantaneous diameter and the actual line surface speed are used to generate a speed reference signal and an inertia compensation signal. An outer compensation loop can be employed to trim the speed reference signal so that the revolution count can be controlled.

  • Patent number: 6388563
Abstract: A modular emergency stop device including a switch unit and a control unit. The switch unit includes a switch which converts from a normal state to an emergency state when an emergency stop is necessary and a housing for the switch. The control unit includes a controller which controls a power source for a machine and a housing for the controller. The switch unit's housing and the control unit's housing are adapted to be selectively coupled together and uncoupled from each other. The switch is operably coupled to the controller when the housings are coupled together whereby the controller may appropriately control the machine's power source when the switch is converted to the emergency state. To replace the switch, the switch's housing is uncoupled from the controller's housing to remove the switch unit and a new switch unit is coupled to the controller's housing.

  • Patent number: 6366483
Abstract: A PWM rectifier wherein the switching bridge has m input filter capacitors, each connected at a terminal thereof, to the line side of the bridge. These terminals are used to connect an m-phase a.c. power supply (m>=1) having a per phase system inductance to the bridge. A current smoothing inductor is connected to the load side of the bridge and enables a load to be connected thereto. A switching pattern generator controls the switches in the switching bridge based on a reference output current. A first control loop is provided for determining an active portion of the reference output current based on a desired power level of the load and an m-phase voltage at the capacitor terminals. A second control loop is provided for determining a reactive portion of the reference output current based on the m-phase voltage at the capacitor terminals. The reactive portion of the current is selected so as to obtain a desired per phase power factor, such as unity, on the power supply.

  • Patent number: 6342805
Abstract: A system and method for selecting an output of an associated circuit includes a pair of inputs for receiving different relative voltage levels. A first switch is operatively coupled to a first of the inputs and a second switch operatively coupled to a second of the inputs. Each of the first and second switches operates mutually exclusively according to the voltage potential between the pair of inputs. A third switch is operatively coupled between a first output of the associated circuit and the first switch. When the third switch is activated in response to activation of the first switch, it couples the first output to an output node. The system further includes a fourth switch operatively coupled between a second output of the associated circuit and the second switch. When the fourth switch is activated in response to activation of the second switch, it couples the second output to the output node.

  • Patent number: 6326758
Abstract: An integrated control and diagnostics system for a controlled system (e.g., a motor) includes a diagnostics module and a controller coupled to the motor. To optimize operation, the diagnostics information signal is used to modify the control provided by the controller as required. Moreover, the output of the control module is coupled to the diagnostics module so that the health assessment made by the diagnostics module can be based at least in part on the output of the controller. The invention uses a model-based diagnostics approach that allows integration of control algorithms with diagnostics algorithms to intelligently trade off optimizing performance to avert or accommodate failures, and to meet performance requirements in a wide range of applications.

  • Patent number: 6323658
Abstract: A broadband test procedure detects the onset of stator winding insulation damage, identifies the failure mechanism, determines the winding's susceptibility to further damage, and predicts stator winding failure. This is accomplished by realizing that changes in the stator winding insulation and/or geometry are reflected as changes in the capacitance between the individual windings and, hence, as changes in the stator winding's broadband impedance response. In the currently preferred approach, the impedance response includes the frequency, magnitude, width, and phase of the resonant impedance.

  • Patent number: 6289735
Abstract: A diagnostic system includes a vibration sensor mounted on a machine to measure vibrations. Vibration signals from the sensor are processed and analyzed by the system. From a known critical frequency of a vibration-generating component, the system measures the amplitude of the vibration signal at more than one harmonic frequency of the known critical frequency and compares the amplitudes to amplitudes at adjacent harmonic frequencies. When a relatively large amplitude is found at a harmonic frequency, that is a harmonic frequency near a resonant frequency of the physical path between the vibration sensor and the vibration-generating component, the system analyzes the shape and magnitude of the vibration signal around that harmonic frequency to evaluate the condition of the machine.

  • Patent number: 6274952
Abstract: A linear motor path forms a closed figure. Contactless power control and position feedback permit a linear motor stage to traverse the closed figure without interference from trailing wires. One embodiment of the closed figure includes a racetrack pattern with straight runs joined by curved ends. Axes of armature windings are skewed to lie across the path in the curved ends to maintain force on the linear motor stage. Other embodiments of the invention includes multilevel paths wherein one portion of the path crosses over another portion of the path. Disclosure is made of a linear motor stage supported below the path by magnetic attraction between permanent magnets on the stage and magnetic material in the path.

  • Patent number: 6269010
Abstract: The drive for an a.c. induction motor features a rectifier for converting alternating current into direct current and a current source inverter for converting direct current into alternating current supplied to a motor. A d.c. link choke interconnects the rectifier and the inverter. The inverter includes a first control loop which provides a desired or command d.c. link choke current to a second control loop responsible for the rectifier. For the purposes of the second control loop the actual d.c. link choke current and an input voltage of the inverter are detected. The difference or error between the desired and actual d.c. choke currents are minimized by a compensator. The output of the compensator is added to the detected inverter input voltage, and the sum is fed to a switching pattern generator which controls the switches in the rectifier. In this manner the feedback of the inverter input voltage is decoupled from the compensator responsible for the d.c. link choke current.
