  • Patent number: 8332289
Abstract: A system and method for associating payments with spending vehicles so that an individual who is entitled to receive periodic or special payments, such as tax refunds or social security checks, receives in place of the payment a spending vehicle, such as a debit card, pre-paid credit, or other card having funds stored thereon. An individual who wishes to receive a spending vehicle rather than the regular payment selects the spending vehicle he or she would like to receive. The individual then assigns his or her right to receive the payment to a third party. The third party then arranges to give a spending vehicle to the individual and to transfer the individual's payment to a sponsor of the spending vehicle. The third party may take a portion of the payment as compensation for the service.

  • Patent number: 8329261
Abstract: A protective coating applied to the underwater portion of a marine vessel operable to inhibit the growth of marine foulants. The coating comprises a polymer, a marine biocide, a preservative, and optionally an antimicrobial agent. In certain embodiments, the marine biocide, preservative, and optional antimicrobial agent are chemically bonded with the polymer thereby significantly reducing the ability of the biocide, preservative, and antimicrobial agent to leach from the coating into the surrounding environment.

  • Patent number: 8328769
Abstract: A pressure actuated flow control valve for an infusion catheter permits gravity flow of a liquid through the catheter and into a patient while resisting back flow of blood from the patient and into the catheter. The valve has a hemispherical body with an outstanding circumferential flange and a normally closed, diametric slit. The slit is longer on the convex outer surface than on the concave inner surface. Dome thickness diminishes in the area adjacent the slit, reducing total apical deflection upon collapse of the slit toward the concave surface. An inner orthogonal rib biases the slit closed. Upon application of a predetermined pressure, the slit opens toward the concave surface to permit forward fluid flow. At lower pressures, the slit closes to check fluid flow. Greater reverse pressure is required to collapse the slit toward the concave surface to permit reverse fluid flow.

  • Patent number: 8328562
Abstract: A motor programming tool is disclosed for associating with a connection block of a motor and sending signals to a programmable controller of the motor, where the connection block includes a plurality of terminals coupled to the controller. The programming tool includes a tool body with an interface generally corresponding with the connection block of the motor, wiring operable to carry the signals, and a plurality of terminal connecting assemblies to associate with the motor terminals. In one embodiment, each connecting assembly includes a mounting element connected to end of the wiring and a plunger element shiftable relative to the mounting element while maintaining electrical connection therewith. Each plunger is biased toward an extended condition and is yieldably retracted inwardly relative thereto when the tool body is associated with the connection block. Embodiments of the programming tool also include circuitry connected to the wiring and including a time-delay relay element.

  • Patent number: 8329495
Abstract: A method of forming a PV module includes forming conductors on a top surface of a PV coated substrate; forming insulators on the top surface of the PV coated substrate; and cutting the PV coated substrate to form a plurality of individual PV cells. The PV coated substrate is cut so that each of the PV cells has some of the conductors and an insulator on its top surface. Multiple PV cells are then joined to form a PV module by attaching an edge of a first one of the PV cells under an edge of a second one of the PV cells so that at least a portion of the conductors on the first PV cell electrically contacts a bottom surface of the second PV cell.

  • Patent number: 8323151
Abstract: Systems and methods of driving and controlling pneumatic and hydraulic devices and, more particularly, to a system and method of driving a hydraulic pump via one output shaft of a motor, and driving a pneumatic compressor via another output shaft of the motor via a clutch. When a user control is engaged, a control system causes the motor to operate at a higher speed, driving the hydraulic pump faster to produce additional hydraulic pressure. When a low air pressure condition is sensed in the pneumatic system, the control system causes the motor to operate at the higher speed and engages the clutch, allowing the pneumatic compressor to supply additional air pressure.

  • Patent number: 8323456
Abstract: A process and system for removing bound water from bio-oil by azeotropic distillation. The process includes combining a bound-water-containing bio-oil with an azeotrope agent and subjecting the resulting treated bio-oil to azeotropic distillation under reduced pressure. The azeotropic distillation removes a substantial portion of the bound water from the bio-oil, thus producing a water-depleted bio-oil that is less corrosive, more stable, and more readily miscible with hydrocarbons.

The communications system may comprise one or more Ethernet links having software and hardware controls for timing, buffering, and messaging, and a dedicated Ethernet line. The Ethernet links may be configured to communicably link sections of a central communication system of the aircraft, each section being part of a separate aircraft component. The Ethernet links may also communicably link the sections with various databases over the Ethernet line. The databases may comprise loadable software, archived testing data, configuration data, and/or diagnostic data. Any of the central communication system sections and the databases may be located at geographically distant locations from each other, such as at separate production sites. The communications system may allow the aircraft components to test each other, or essentially for the aircraft to test itself prior to its components being physically joined together.

  • Patent number: 8322272
Abstract: An improved screw feeder assembly is provided for interconnection between the outlet of a preconditioner and the inlet of an extruder barrel. The assembly includes an upright housing with a pair of elongated shafts equipped with auger flighting within the housing and driven by means of motor. Preferably, the housing is mechanically coupled to the outlet and inlet with the shafts extending through the preconditioner vessel and downwardly to a point within the inlet and closely adjacent the screw(s) within the extruder barrel; the flighting is provided along the length of the housing, from a point closely adjacent the outlet and into the extruder inlet. This provides a positive conveyance of preconditioned material from the outlet to the inlet. Use of the assembly allows maintenance of superatmospheric pressures and temperatures above 212° F. within the preconditioner, which permits more efficient processing.

  • Patent number: 8322061
Abstract: A distribution marketing piece is designed to be adhered to and carried by a substrate and includes a top ply selectively adhered to a liner ply. A transverse line of separation divides the top ply into first and second sections, each section having side strips and the first section having *a central portion and the second section having a center section. Removal of the liner before application of the top ply to the substrate results in removal of the side strips along the second section which are carried with the liner ply; a portion of the liner ply remains adhered **to the first and second sections to connecting them. By folding the liner ply and the connected part of the first and second sections, the first section adheres to the substrate surrounding the center section and the central portion to define a pocket free of adhesive connection to the substrate.

  • Patent number: 8317460
Abstract: A boundary layer wind turbine having one or more flaps coupled to the underneath of a turbine disk is provided. The turbine uses an assembly of closely stacked disks that are rotated by the wind blowing across the face of the disks to rotate a turbine shaft that is attached to an electrical generator to generate electricity. The wind moves the turbines as it flows across the surface of the closely spaced disks. The disks include one or more flaps attached to the bottom side of the disks. The wind blows against the flap, which in turn exerts a force on the disk, causing the turbine to rotate. The flaps may be located near the outer circumference of the disks. The one or more flaps on the disks retract automatically as the rotational velocity of the turbine increases.

  • Patent number: 8314698
Abstract: An anti-tamper assembly is provided in order to sense the attempted removal of a body attached to a surface by a fastener. The assembly includes an anti-tamper access-blocking element positioned in an anti-tamper position proximal to the fastener, along with an anti-tamper switch operably coupled with the element in order to bias the switch to one switch condition. In the event that the element is moved from its anti-tamper position, the switch moves to another switch condition, which generates an alarm signal. The assembly may be used to protect an alarm section forming a part of an alarm assembly. The section includes a sensor or switch operable to detect relative movement between first and second members such as a door and doorframe. A mechanically actuatable switch having an actuating arm may be used where the arm engages access-blocking element.
