  • Patent number: 5079920
Abstract: A hydraulic shape memory material force converter is provided comprising a shape memory material. The force converter utilizes hydraulic units and a hydraulic fluid. The hydraulic unit is changed from a first position to a second position when the shape memory material, connected at one end to one end of the hydraulic unit and its other to a fixed point or a second end of the hydraulic unit, changes from a martensitic to an austenitic state upon heating. The hydraulic fluid responds to the movement of the hydraulic unit by moving from the hydraulic unit to a receiving device, which receiving device performs work due to the motion of the hydraulic fluid. Upon cooling the shape memory material to change it from the austenitic state back to the martensitic state, the hydraulic unit returns to its original position, with a biasing means being provided to return the hydraulic unit to its rest position.

  • Patent number: 5062788
Abstract: A high efficiency linear gas burner assembly having a mixture manifold assembly for delivering a combustible gas and air mixture to a burner. The mixture manifold assembly supports an elongate, channel-shaped, secondary air plenum which receives therein a burner housing. The burner housing supports two, spaced, parallel plates, each having apertures therethrough. The gas/air mixture is delivered through the mixture manifold assembly and secondary air plenum to the burner housing where the mixture passes first through the apertures of the lower plate, then between the plates, then through the apertures of the upper plate or burner surface. The size and number of apertures in the upper plate and the space between the plates ensures that the flame remains stable during a wide range of turndown, and that the flame does not retrogress through the burner apertures. Secondary air ports are provided along the interior of the secondary air plenum to provide additional air for combustion.

  • Patent number: 5060596
Abstract: A method for filling a container which is used for the transportation of live poultry from a breeding farm to a slaughterhouse is described, as well as a container to be used with said method. The container is divided into compartments, one on top of the other. Prior to the filling of a compartment with poultry, the bottom face of the compartment lying above it, together with the side face thereof, is moved away fully or partially. Said side face is lying at the filling side of the container. The container is constructed in such a way that the poultry can meet no obstacles at the filling side above the compartment to be filled. Moving away said bottom and side faces may be performed by sliding them away sideways or by flapping them up.

  • Patent number: 5058518
Abstract: A tufting machine with front and back laterally shiftable needle bars carry needles for producing loops in a backing material the accent yarns being fed to the needles by yarn feed controls and the border yarns by standard feed. The operation of the yarn feed controls is electrically operated by a computer which operates according to a pattern in memory, the lateral shifting of the needle bars being synchronized with the operations of the yarn feed controls. By producing high and low loops with the accent yarns, the low loops are hidden by the overlay of level tufts so that spaced, isolated pin dots are visible. The memory for the pattern is on a floppy disc created using a mouse and a second computer which displays both the amount of lateral shift for both needle bars and the high and low loops of the accent yarns. A print out of the displays are used for both threadup and the production of cams for controlling lateral shifting.

  • Patent number: 5059405
Abstract: A process and apparatus for removing the impurities from a gas stream produced from a landfill such that essentially pure carbon dioxide and methane is recovered. After the landfill gas is mechanically dewatered, the gas is filtered of particulate solids and aerosols and purified by removing sulfur compounds using zinc oxide columns, removing halogens using activated alumina columns, removing hydrocarbons using activated charcoal columns, and oxidizing remaining impurities using potassium permanganate impregnated activated alumina columns. Lastly the gas is incinerated in a boiler/incinerator combustion furnace to produce an exit stream containing essentially pure carbon dioxide and air, which is further treated in a conventional carbon dioxide treatment process.

  • Patent number: RE33822
Abstract: Two gang disc harrow units are pivotally joined near corresponding ends by a vertical axis hinge coupling. Near their opposite corresponding ends, the harrow units are connected by a collapsible toggle linkage which operates in a horizontal plane under influence of a power cylinder, whereby the harrow units can be positioned at a prescribed angle for working the soil and in parallel relationship for transport. Two transport wheels are pivotally attached to the rear harrow unit on transverse pivot axes which are parallel to the rear unit. Power cylinders interconnecting these wheels with the rear harrow unit are operable to lower and raise the wheels for lifting and lowering the rear unit. The front harrow unit has a pivotal connection with a drawbar which in turn is coupled through a draft tongue with the hitch of a towing or transport vehicle. Another power cylinder connected between the pivoted drawbar and front harrow unit is operable to lift and lower the front unit.
