Abstract: A process for making wet strengthened paper comprises (1) treating an aqueous suspension of papermaking fibers with a composition comprising (a) a cationic polymer that cures at a neutral pH and is capable by itself of conferring wet strength to paper, the resin having a multiplicity of 3-hydroxyazetidinium ion groups along the polymer chain, and (b) a water-soluble carboxyalkylated polyamine polymer or a carboxylic acid salt thereof.
Abstract: A process is disclosed for the synthesis of alkyl ketene dimers by the dehydrohalogenation of a C.sub.8 -C.sub.22 saturated or unsaturated linear fatty acid halide, comprising reacting the fatty acid chloride with a cyclic tertiary amine in a solvent that is selected from the group consisting of cycloalkanes and alkanes at a temperature of up to 75.degree., mechanically separating tertiary amine hydrochloride salts from alkyl ketene dimer dissolved in the solvent, and recovering the alkyl ketene dimer from the solvent.
Abstract: A paper-making furnish, comprising poly(paravinyl phenol), also known as poly(hydroxy styrene), in admixture with polyethylene oxide, and a process for retaining fine particles in paper-making comprising adding poly(paravinyl phenol) and polyethylene oxide to a paper-making furnish, are disclosed.
Abstract: A process for increasing the resistance of the cut edges of liquid packaging board to penetration by hot hydrogen peroxide, comprising adding to an aqueous pulp slurry at a neutral to alkaline pH, either separately or in preblended form an aqueous emulsion of a cellulose-reactive size, a non-cellulose-reactive size selected from the group consisting of waxes, bis-stearamides, and fatty acid derivatives, and a thermosetting resin that is capable of covalent bonding to cellulose fiber and self-cross-linking.
Abstract: An improvement is disclosed in a method for sizing a paper product of sheeted cellulosic fibers by incorporating into the fibers a ketene dimer size, the improvement involving treating the fibers with an aquasol of positively charged colloidal silica, positively charged colloidal alumina, or positively charged colloidal zirconia containing the ketene dimer size.
Abstract: This invention generally provides a class of novel cationic resin comprised of a cross-linked polyamine having pendant tertiary and/or quaternary amine groups linked to amine groups in said polyamine by a hydrocarbon chain including a hydroxyl group in the .beta.-position with respect to the polyamine chain. In general, these resins can comprise the reaction product of a polyamine having secondary amine groups, a crosslinking agent, and a cationizing agent having an epoxide group and a tertiary or quaternary amine (quaternary ammonium) group. These cationic resins have been found to be useful for a variety of operations in the manufacture of paper and paperboard, especially as drainage aids and stabilizers for dispersed rosin sizing agents.

Abstract: A polyelectrolyte complex comprising at least one water-soluble, linear, high molecular weight, low charge density cationic polymer having a reduced specific viscosity greater than 2 deciliters/gram (at 0.05 weight % in a 2M NaCl solution at 30.degree. C.) and a charge density of 0.2 to 4 milliequivalents/gram (meq/g), and at least one water-soluble, anionic polymer having a charge density less than 5 meq/g, an aqueous system comprising the polyelectrolyte complex, a composition comprising the polymers which form the polyelectrolyte complex, and paper comprising the polyelectrolyte complex. It is also directed to a process comprising (1) forming an aqueous suspension of cellulosic fibers; (2) adding a strengthening additive so that the aforementioned polyelectrolyte complex is incorporated into the aqueous suspension of cellulosic fibers; and (3) sheeting and drying the fibers to form the desired cellulosic web.
Abstract: Compositions of ketene dimer and nonreactive hydrophobe compound and method for internally sizing paper therewith are provided, wherein the melting point of said hydrophobe compound is higher than the melting point of the ketene dimer.
Abstract: Increased resistance of the cut edges of liquid packaging board to penetration by hot hydrogen peroxide is obtained by adding an aqueous emulsion of ketene dimer, cationic rosin size and insolubilizing agent either separately or in preblended form to the aqueous pulp slurry at a neutral to alkaline pH.
Abstract: Stabilized aqueous emulsions of ketene dimer and nonreactive hydrophobe and method for sizing unbleached fibers and undigested wood chips for use in building products are provided.
Abstract: Stable high solids dispersions of ketene dimer are provided by using water soluble carboxylic acid, e.g. acetic acid with cationic starch, sodium lignin sulfonate and aluminum sulfate.
Abstract: Poly(dicyclopentadiene) having improved odor is obtained by incorporating in at least one of the parts of the two part metathesis polymerization catalyst system from about 2 to about 500 ppm (based on the weight of dicyclopentadiene) of liquid deodorant such as cyclacet, cyclaprop, .beta.-damascenone, .beta.-damascone, rose oxide, terpene C, citronellyl methyl ether, citronellyl ethyl ether, geranyl methyl ether, geranyl ethyl ether, 2,6-dimethyloctyl methyl ether, 2,6-dimethyloctyl ethyl ether, .alpha.-terpenyl methyl ether, .alpha.-terpenyl ethyl ether, methyl salicylate, methyl octin carbonate, and 1,3,5-undecatriene.
