Abstract: A process is disclosed for the preparation of 1,4-dioxy-2-butenes by reacting 3,4-epoxy-1-butene with an oxygen nucleophile in the presence of a Pd(O) complex catalyst.
Abstract: Disclosed are novel catalysts useful for the hydrogenation of carbonyl-containing compounds at mild conditions of temperature and pressure to produce alcohols or amines is disclosed. The catalysts comprise palladium and zinc on a catalyst support material and are obtained by the steps of:(a) providing a catalyst support material on which is deposited zero-valent palladium in a uniformly and highly dispersed form;(b) contacting the palladium-bearing support material of (a) with zinc or a reducible compound thereof; and, preferably,(c) heating the palladium- and zinc-bearing support of (b) at a temperature of about 200.degree. to 400.degree. C. in the presence of an oxygen-containing gas.
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for removing chlorine-containing impurities from quinone compounds such as p-bezonquinone. The process involves extracting a quinone compound containing 1000 ppm or more chlorine with heptane, cyclohexane or a mixture thereof and separating the quinone compound from the extraction mixture. The process provides a means for obtaining quinone compounds containing 50 ppm or less chlorine.
Abstract: Disclosed is a continuous process for the manufacture of 2-ethyl-2-(hydroxymethyl)hexanal wherein 2-ethylhexanal, formaldehyde and a tertiary amine are continuously fed to a reaction zone and crude product comprising an aqueous phase and an organic phase containing 2-ethyl-2-(hydroxymethyl)hexanal and 2-ethylhexanal is continuously removed from the reaction zone. Also disclosed are processes for (1) the azeotropic distillation of the organic phase of the crude product whereby unreacted 2-ethylhexanal is recovered and (2) the catalytic hydrogenation of the refined, organic phase of the crude product to produce 2-butyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol.

Abstract: A novel method quantitatively analyzes certain organophosphorus compounds present in mixtures of the organophosphorus compounds, a Group VIII metal and an inert solvent using gas chromatography techniques. The method involves the conversion of a catalytically-active form of the Group VIII metal to a cyano complex prior to gas chromatography analysis. Compositions are also described which are useful in the gas chromatography analysis.
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for the recovery of acetyl values from an ethylidene diacetate stream obtained from an acetic anhydride production system. The process comprises hydrolyzing ethylidene diacetate in a liquid phase, hydrolysis zone containing a non-volatile, acidic catalyst and maintained under boiling conditions to obtain a mixture of acetaldehyde, acetic acid and water and then oxidizing the mixture in a liquid phase, oxidation zone containing a cobalt oxidation catalyst to obtain a mixture of acetic acid and water. The process optionally includes a means for reducing substantially the concentration of iodine in the EDA used in the process.

Abstract: Disclosed is a novel process for the manufacture of 2,2,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutanediol commencing with the pyrolysis of isobutyric anhydride to produce dimethylketene. Dimethylketene is absorbed into certain carboxylate ester solvents which function as the process solvents for subsequent dimerization of the dimethylketene to 2,2,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutanedione followed by the catalytic hydrogenation of the dione to the diol product.

Abstract: Disclosed is an extraction process for the recovery of high-boiling aldehydes produced by the rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of olefins in the presence of a hydroformylation solvent. The extraction process involves intimately contacting a hydroformylation product solution comprising (i) a high-boiling aldehyde, (ii) hydroformylation catalyst components comprising rhodium and an organophosphine compound, and (iii) a hydroformylation solvent with an extraction solution comprising a primary alkanol and water to form a 2-phase mixture. The phases are separated to obtain a hydroformylation solvent phase containing catalyst components and an alkanol/water phase containing the high-boiling aldehyde.
