  • Patent number: 5245352
Abstract: A non-linear solid state conductor placed across a resonant aperture formed in a surface reflective of electromagnetic energy becomes conductive under the influence of a microwave field above a threshhold energy level of intensity to render the resonant aperture fully reflecting for the bandwidth of frequencies associated with the geometry of the resonant aperture.

  • Patent number: 5112006
Abstract: A self defense missile, for bombers in particular, wherein the slower flying bomber is being overtaken by a faster flying hostile aircraft in the rear quadrant. The self defense missile is an unpowered missile having wings to provide lift, a guidance system to control the direction of flight of the missile, and a homing detection in the tail of the missile to cause the missile to fly into the path of the hostile aircraft. In operation, the self defense missile is launched parallel to the direction of flight of the bomber. As the missile slows down, the wings give it lift to keep it at the appropriate altitude. The homing detector in the tail guides on the approaching hostile aircraft and the guidance system keeps the self defense missile on a collision course.

  • Patent number: 4445086
Abstract: A tester for conductors in a multiconductor cable which afford identification of the respective ends of each pair and tests each pair for shorts and opens. A transmitter unit for connection to one terminus of the cable and a receiver unit for connection to the opposite terminus of the cable. The transmitter has a plurality of integrated circuits forming a sequencer to apply in sequence a test signal to one end of each of the conductors. The transmitter has a power supply and there is a connection over a conductive path independent of the cable to connect the power supply to the receiver whereby the receiver is extremely compact. The receiver contains a plurality of light emitting diodes that constitute signal detectors, there being one detector for each conductor. The transmitter is supplied with controls for controlling the mode of operation of the equipment and for affording variation in the number of conductors that can be tested.

  • Patent number: 4305177
Abstract: A hinge assembly between a lifting foil (12) and an associated flap (14) wherein the flap (14) includes a series of sections (20, 22). In one embodiment, each section (20,22) may be rotatably mounted by a single hinge (24) to the foil (12) and interconnected by a coupling device (34) to an adjacent flap section. Additionally, a shear key coupling device (40) may be arranged between each pair of sections (20, 22) substantially extending to the trailing edge of each section (20, 22).

  • Patent number: 4229109
Abstract: A closed loop system which includes (1) a drum mixer, (2) a heat source separate from the drum mixer for producing a heated gas, (3) intake and exhaust ducts which channel, respectively, the gas produced by the heat source to the intake end of the drum mixer, and the gas at the discharge end of the drum mixer back to one intake of the heat source, and (4) a fan for maintaining the flow of gas in the system. The gas produced by the heat source is between 700.degree. F. and 2000.degree. F. when it enters the drum mixer at its intake end from the intake duct. Graded aggregates and a bituminous binder are fed into the drum mixer at its intake end. The graded aggregates are mixed with the bituminous binder, in the presence of the heated gas, by rotational action of the drum mixer. The resulting bituminous paving mixture is discharged at the discharge end of the drum mixer, along with exhaust gas, a portion of which is channeled back to one intake of the heat source by the exhaust duct.

  • Patent number: 4202172
Abstract: Protectors for certain elements such as fuel injectors and flameholders used in conjunction with the ramjet phase of an integral rocket ramjet. In the preferred embodiment slip-on caps of a high temperature material such as graphite are used to protect the fuel injectors and flameholders. The caps are installed and the solid boost propellant packaged about them. Following boost burnout the initial fuel pressurization for transition to ramjet operation would remove the caps allowing operation in a ramjet mode.

  • Patent number: 4050397
Abstract: A predetermined-sized and shaped foil-fence structure which is substantially perpendicularly mounted at the foil-tip of a hydrofoil craft and projects downward, upward or partly downward and upward from the foil-tip. The fence surfaces are generally disposed parallel to the longitudinal axis of the craft.

  • Patent number: 4039171
Abstract: An improved rotating drum dryer and/or mixer for drying or mixing materials on a continuous basis is disclosed. The dryer and/or mixer includes a rotatable drum having an inlet end for receiving materials and a forced air burner for directing a stream of heated gases axially through the drum. A heat dispersing means such as an array of spaced deflecting bars is disposed downstream from the source of heated gases. The dispersing means provides the interior of the drum with a more uniform radial temperature distribution and minimizes the central high temperature zone normally associated with such drum dryers and/or mixers. Minimization of the central high temperature zone results in lowered production of smoke and other noxious emissions by an operating dryer or mixer.

  • Patent number: 4030687
Abstract: An exhaust nozzle used in conjunction with an upper surface blown aircraft for directing the exhaust gases from the aircraft engine over the wing and flap surfaces of the aircraft. The nozzle can occupy two positions. The first position, for use in cruise mode, directs the exhaust gases rearwardly in a normal manner. In the second position, used for takeoff and landing, the nozzle outlet area is slightly increased and the nozzle tilted to direct the exhaust gases rearwardly and downwardly across the wing and flap surfaces thereby increasing lift due to the Coanda effect.
