  • Patent number: 4918987
Abstract: A laser accelerometer comprises a frame having three orthogonal input axes and multiple proof masses, each proof mass having a predetermined blanking surface. A flexible beam supports each proof mass. The flexible beam permits movement of the proof mass on the input axis. A laser light source provides a light ray. The laser source is characterized to have a transverse field characteristic having a central null intensity region. A mirror transmits a ray of light to a detector. The detector is positioned to be centered to the light ray and responds to the transmitted light ray intensity to provide an intensity signal. The intensity signal is characterized to have a magnitude related to the intensity of the transmitted light ray. The proof mass blanking surface is centrally positioned within and normal to the light ray null intensity region to provide increased blanking of the light ray in response to transverse movement of the mass on the input axis.

  • Patent number: 4904971
Abstract: A superconducting electromagnet comprising an outer core having an aperture; an inner core having a periphery characterized for complementary insertion into the outer core aperture leaving a uniform gap therebetween and a frame means for coupling the outer and inner cores into a fixed position relation. A magnetizing means, such as a coil on the inner core develops an initial flux field. The flux field passes through the inner core, the first gap, the outer core, across the second gap to the inner core in response to excitation of the magnetizing means. The outer and inner cores are coated on all surfaces except opposing inner and outer core gap surfaces with superconductive material. The superconductive material is applied to the outer and inner cores at regions selected to pass induced magnetizing current. The induced magnetizing current circulating via closed current paths within the superconductive material to support the flux free of energy loss on termination of excitation of the magnetizing means.

The cross sectional area of the tabs may be substantially less than the cross sectional area of helix turns thereby further eliminating interference with smaller core exit slots. A plurality of such windings are stacked, one on top of the other, or interleaved or placed on torroidal core with flexible orientation of the tabs being available to facilitate access to each of multiple terminals and to isolate or group electrical functions.

  • Patent number: 4830495
Abstract: A passive ring resonator gyroscope comprising a single piece body having an integral first and second resonator cavity. The first resonator cavity contains a single frequency laser means to provide a sharply tuned single frequency light source to the second resonator cavity. The single frequency light source is sharply tuned and is split to form first and second sources. The second resonator cavity is a passive high Q cavity having a closed second optical path. The two light sources are fed to the second resonator and propagate as CW and CCW beams within the second resonator. A first servo channel tunes the frequency of the CW beam to a resonance peak. A second servo channel tunes the CCW beam to its resonance peak. By converting both servo error outputs into frequency, the relative frequency difference between the CW and CCW beams are recorded as the frequency shift in response to the body rate rotation about the sensitive axis.

  • Patent number: 4812722
Abstract: A multi-mode force control apparatus and circuit for applying a predetermined time dependent force to a workpiece having a variable compliance. The workpiece is supported by an anvil and an actuator is used for applying force to the workpiece. The multi-mode force control apparatus has a position mode sequence that provides a composite position command signal characterizing the predetermined time dependent position of the hammer. A position servo amplifier provides an input control signal to move the hammer from a retracted position to a predetermined first position close to the workpiece. The hammer is then moved slowly into contact with the workpiece. A force reference command signal representing the predetermined time dependent force is increased to a predetermined value. A force signal from a force transducer then rises to a value of voltage representing an ultimate actual force value. A force hold mode timing sequence provides a force hold mode time interval.

  • Patent number: 4809209
Abstract: A signal processor suitable for use as a discrete-time or sampled-data analog filter can be implemented by using only a few of the coefficient multipliers of a typical analog finite-impulse-response (FIR) filter, and expressing each coefficient multiplier as a multibit digital word. Each bit of the multibit word is formulated as a tap weight coupled to a delay element of an input-delay line. Factor elements are coupled to the outputs of the bit-tap-weights to multiply the outputs of those bit-tap-weights by factors representative of the significance of the bit represented by that weight. Bit-tap weight outputs from tabs that were lens delayed on the input line are delayed upon output so the outputs of all the bit-tap weights associated with a single multibit word are combined together to form a single output. The output signal is interpolated in an interpolator to recover the information lost by omitting some of the coefficient multipliers.

  • Patent number: 4803883
Abstract: An accelerometer comprising a frame having an input axis (y) and a cross axis (x) orthogonal to and co-planar with the input axis. The accelerometer has a flexible beam coupled to a proofmass. The beam is supported at a pivot location. A rotator coupled to the frame provides a restoring force having a first or second polarity to the beam. The restoring force is applied in a direction parallel to the input axis (y) to restore the proofmass to a reference position in response to an absence of acceleration along the input axis. A position signal sensor provides an error signal proportional to the displacement of the proofmass from the reference position. A servo responds to the error signal by applying a drive signal to the rotator which applies a restoring force to the flexible beam to restore the proofmass to its reference position.
