  • Patent number: 5295534
Abstract: A well pressure monitoring system in which a hydrocarbon fluid is being produced through a Christmas tree or similar flow controller apparatus. Well pressure is transmitted through a tap-off communicated to a pressure sensor. The pressure is thereafter transmitted to a base or control station. To avoid a major uncontrolled flow of the hydrocarbon from the well in the event of inadvertent breakage or accident to the monitoring system, an excess flow control valve is positioned between the well flow and the pressure sensor. The excess flow valve functions to cut off fluid flow, but is provided with a vent passage in the valve actuator through which a minimal amount of the hydrocarbon can escape. When the damage to the monitoring system has been overcome, the vent passage will allow a downstream pressure build-up in the closed system, thus permitting a biasing spring to automatically reset the valve to open and operable position, thereby stabilizing the pressure acting on the actuator.

  • Patent number: 5295350
Abstract: Mechanical and electrical power are produced along with synthesis or fuel gas by the partial oxidation process with integrated combustion and steam turbines. By-product vaporized liquefied natural gas for feed to a pipeline for gas consumers is obtained by heat exchange with heat containing streams from the partial oxidation gasification and gas cleaning and purification zone; and optionally from heat containing streams from combustion and/or steam turbine zones which are integrated with said partial oxidation process. Heat from the combustion turbine exhaust gas is used as follows: (1) superheat steam for use in a steam turbine; (2) preheat water saturated clean sulfur-free synthesis or fuel gas with or without supplemental methane enrichment; (3) preheat oxygen gas for said partial oxidation zone; and (4) vaporize LNG. Pre, inter, and after stages of an air compressor are cooled by indirect heat exchange with LNG which is thereby warmed or vaporized.

  • Patent number: 5292442
Abstract: A process for disposing of sanitary sewage sludge by producing a pumpable slurry of sewage sludge with or without solid carbonaceous fuel and burning said slurry as fuel in a partial oxidation gas generator, furnace, or boiler. The aqueous slurry of sewage sludge is concentrated by removing water by means of a conventional belt filter press, centrifuge, or hydroclone. The dewatered slurry of sewage sludge is heated by direct contact with steam while air and organic vapors are simultaneously removed, to reduce the pressure in the system; hydrothermally treated in two steps with indirect and direct heat exchange with steam; dewatered by flash evaporation and centrifuging; and burned with or without admixture with solid carbonaceous fuel in a partial oxidation gasifier, furnace, boiler, or incinerator to produce synthesis gas or a hot raw effluent gas stream. In a preferred embodiment, the effluent gas stream is cleaned and purified and non-contaminating ash and slag are separated.

  • Patent number: 5286375
Abstract: Pumping apparatus pumps an oil water mixture from a body of water containing oil. A first sample stream is taken from the oil water mixture. The oil/water mixture is then stratified to provide an oil rich stream and a water rich stream. The oil rich stream is also sampled to provide a second sample stream. A water cut monitor receives both sample streams and determines the water cuts of both sample streams and provides corresponding water cut signals. A control subsystem controls the volumetric flows of the oil rich stream and the water rich stream in accordance with the water cut signals.

  • Patent number: 5286383
Abstract: A separator or emulsion breaker for separating the emulsion into a hydrocarbon component which is lighter than an aqueous component and having capability for handling excessive amounts of water, the separator, includes a tank having an emulsion permeable partition forming or flow stabilizer within the tank dividing the latter into an entry chamber and a separating compartment. The emulsion permeable stabilizer receives a turbulent stream of incoming emulsion and discharges the same as a relatively quiescent flow in an upward direction to facilitate separation of the hydrocarbon component from the aqueous component. The solids contained in the emulsion flow downwardly into the sand trap. As the lighter component is raised by the rising water surface, it can be removed through a multi-port discharge opening.

  • Patent number: 5277814
Abstract: A method for aerobically treating water-containing organic wastes is provided. This process may be conducted in a closed reactor with suitable controls to prevent any adverse environmental impact, and involves mixing the wastes with an inert and non-friable bulking agent comprising a substantial component having a density less than water in the presence of an active biomass. An oxygen-containing gas is passed through the reaction mixture to assist in the removal of excess (free) water from the wastes to form a wetted high solids content reaction mixture containing the waste solids mixed in a bed of bulking agent. Effective aerobic reaction conditions are employed to convert the wastes to a treated waste.
