Abstract: An electrode joint for connecting two electrode sections together including a threaded nipple screwed into a threaded socket within the end of one electrode section is provided with a reservoir containing a cementitious bonding material comprising pitch particles and a foaming agent selected from the group consisting of sulfur, nitrated decant oil, 2,4-dinitroanoline and mixtures thereof.
Abstract: High density composites consisting of graphite and metal borides by pressing blended powders of pitch-free coke and boride powder. The pressing may be hot pressing at temperatures of about 2200.degree. C. and pressure of about 1500 psi or cold pressing at about room temperature followed by high temperature sintering. Some of the boron from the boride diffuses substitutionally into the structure at the processing temperatures promoting graphitization; whereby densification and bonding the resulting degree of graphitization of the shapes is comparable to that of conventional graphite articles processed at temperatures in excess of 2800.degree. C. The mechanical strength of these composites is equivalent to and often exceeds the strength of conventional graphites and the oxidation resistance in dry air is much superior at temperatures as high as 800.degree. C. Overall processing time is reduced from months to days thus improving the economics of the process.

Abstract: A tar-containing aqueous liquid wood smoke is extracted with selected organic liquid solvents to form a tar-enriched liquid fraction and a tar-depleted aqueous liquid smoke fraction, the latter being used for food casing treatment to facilitate smoke coloring and flavoring of encased foodstuff during processing.
Abstract: Tar-depleted liquid smoke solutions are made by generating a smoke vapor, selectively solvent extracting the tars from the smoke vapor, and absorbing the color, flavor and odor constituents of the smoke vapors into an aqueous medium. The aqueous tar-depleted liquid smoke has a high coloring ability, a high concentration of carbonyls, and a low phenol content and is used to treat a tubular casing.
Abstract: A cooling system cleaning composition comprising an aqueous solution of a tetra-alkali metal salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, a soluble salt of citric acid, and a soluble salt of nitric acid. The preferred composition also contains an aluminum corrosion inhibitor and has a pH between about 10 and about 14.
Abstract: A tar-depleted, concentrated liquid smoke is made that has superior flavoring and coloring abilities, low phenolic content, and a low acid content. It may also be partially neutralized to form a low viscosity, partially neutralized, tar-depleted, concentrated, liquid smoke composition. Both the partially neutralized and unneutralized compositions are suitable for use in commercial process equipment to make smoke impregnated cellulosic food casings.
Abstract: A tamper-indicating closure comprising a disc-shaped top with an upper skirt extending downwardly from the top; an annular upper bead around the inner surface of the upper skirt; a lower skirt proximate to and in center alignment with the upper skirt, the upper skirt being disposed between the top and the lower skirt; an annular retention bead around the inner surface of the lower skirt; a breakable bridge means between the skirts as the sole connection between the skirts; and a tool aperture between the skirts adapted to accept a tool means for breaking the bridge means so as to part the skirts.
Abstract: A tar-depleted aqueous liquid smoke composition with smoke coloring and smoke flavoring capability and a tubular food casing with the composition applied on a surface thereof. The food casing is stuffed with foodstuff and processed to convert the foodstuff into a food product and form a smoke color on the food product surface.
Abstract: A method for forming a suspension of a fibrillated fiber in an alcoholic medium which comprises (i) providing a mixture comprising alcohol, water, and dispersing agent, wherein the concentration of the water is at least about 15 wt. %; (ii) dispersing a fibrillated fiber in the mixture of (i) to provide a fibrillated fiber predispersion; and (iii) diluting the predispersion of (ii) with alcohol to provide a final dispersion of fibrillated fiber in an alcoholic medium.
Abstract: The melt index is reduced and the rheology is modified in ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers used in the manufacture of films, by the addition of a crosslinking agent to the copolymer. This allows the use of more readily available raw materials and improves the stability of the bubble during stretching of tubular films.

Abstract: Masterbatch concentrates are prepared by the use of a granular resin, permitting higher concentration of liquid additives in the concentrate.
Abstract: Disclosed is a closure having an aperture at one end and projections on its edges that is improved by the use of slits, either extending from the aperture or extending from the abutment edges of the projections, which provide a locking action that prevents release of the closure when under elongation load through curling and deformation of the strip.
Abstract: Disclosed is a composition for stopping leaks which comprises the combination of a fibrillated fiber and a particulate material, such as a seed meal, in a suspension in a liquid medium. A preferred fibrillated fiber comprises the polymer, poly(imino-1,4-phenyleneiminoterephthaloyl).
Abstract: This invention is directed to hemi-formals having the following formulas: ##STR1## wherein b is 1 to about 5, c is 1 to about 3, d is 0 to about 2, the sum of c and d does not exceed 3 and is equal to or greater than 1 and n has a value equal to or greater than 1. These materials can be used to manufacture phenolic resins and are adaptable to liquid injection molding processes.
Abstract: There are described liquid compositions of a hemiformal of phenol and/or a hemiformal of a methylolated phenol with a miscible polymers such as phenol-formaldehyde resoles, phenol-formaldehyde, novolacs, aromatic polyesters, unsaturated polyesters, poly(aryl-ethers), aromatic polycarbonates urea-formaldehyde resins, or melamine-formaldehyde resins. The compositions are useful for forming thermoset plastic materials.
