Patent number: 6597539Abstract: A suspension assembly for supporting a read/write head/slider assembly adjacent to a rotating storage disk with dynamically adjustable flying height for use within a hard disk drive is provided. The suspension assembly includes a generally elongated loadbeam that has a baseplate defined at a first end thereof and a gimbaled flexure portion defined at a second end thereof. The flexure portion includes a pair of flexure legs and a flexure tongue. The pair of flexure legs extend from the flexure tongue and each leg attaches to an opposite side of the loadbeam. The flexure tongue generally provides a mounting surface for the read/write head/slider assembly. Strips of thermal-expansion material are attached to the flexure portion. These strips are connected to a power source via a power conductor. When the strips are energized, they expand and deform a portion of the flexure portion.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1999Date of Patent: July 22, 2003Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventors: Steven Stupp, Richard Blanco, Timothy A. Patent number: 6538853Abstract: An improved E-block for positioning one or more transducer assemblies proximate one or more rotating storage disks of a disk drive is provided herein. The E-block includes an actuator hub and one or more actuator arms which cantilever away from the actuator hub for holding the transducer assemblies proximate the rotating storage disks. As provided herein, at least one of the actuator arms is a depopulated actuator arm which retains less than two transducer assemblies. Each depopulated actuator arm includes at least one, weighted segment integrally formed into the depopulated actuator arm. Further, each depopulated actuator arm has an arm thickness which is less than an arm thickness for a double head actuator arm. The weighted segment and the reduced arm thickness allow the depopulated actuator arm(s) to vibrate similar to a populated actuator arm(s). This allows the disk drive to be designed and tuned to improve fragility and resonance characteristics of the E-block.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 1999Date of Patent: March 25, 2003Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventors: Stephen P. Patent number: 6487047Abstract: A tall-electrode trace interconnect array includes a dielectric support substrate for supporting least two tall-electrode trace conductors. A dielectric support structure on the support substrate supports outside longitudinal walls of the two tall-electrode trace conductors. The dielectric support structure is formed to be absent from a longitudinal space between the two tall-electrode trace conductors thereby defining an ambient air dielectric to reduce and control inter-electrode capacitance and increase resonant frequency and effective electrical bandwidth of the trace interconnect array. A method for forming the array is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1999Date of Patent: November 26, 2002Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventor: Arun Balakrishnan

Patent number: 6476998Abstract: A method for improving servo seek settling performance by selectively activating a gain enhancement control signal during settling. As an actuator approaches a target location, absolute position and velocity of the read/write transducer head are monitored. If the absolute position changes absolute values (positive to negative or vice-versa) or the velocity approaches zero, the gain enhancement control signal is activated and combined with a nominal actuator control signal to further urge the actuator towards the target location. The gain enhancement control signal decays exponentially so as not to excite mechanical resonance of the actuator arms.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1998Date of Patent: November 5, 2002Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventor: Man F. Cheung

Patent number: 6424485Abstract: A method for improving disk drive performance by adaptively calculating skew values for each drive. During a production phase of the disk drive manufacturing process, skew values are calculated using measured seek times, then implemented to each drive. The calculation scheme permits slipped revolutions to occur during a percentage of the time so that skew values are not so high as to hinder high performance.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1999Date of Patent: July 23, 2002Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventors: Yoko Enokida, Richard D. Pitzer, Karman Tam

Patent number: 6417997Abstract: Mechanically formed standoffs in a disk drive integrated circuit interconnect reduces the cost of manufacturing and improves the reliability of the electrical interconnections thereof. Connection pads defined along the interconnect are bonded with bonding pads of a signal producing source and a signal processing source. The standoffs provide mechanical stops during the bonding process, enabling sufficient bonding material to form between bonding areas. The standoffs are mechanically formed with a punch and die assembly either directly through a bonding pad predefined along traces on the interconnect or adjacent the bonding pad. The standoffs formed through the bonding pads are covered with solder or other electrically conductive bonding material.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2001Date of Patent: July 9, 2002Inventor: Stephen P. Williams

Patent number: 6381102Abstract: A latch for retaining a transducer in a landing zone of a disk drive is provided herein. The latch includes a retainer movable between an engaged position and a disengaged position. The retainer retains a head stack assembly near an outer diameter stop in the engaged position. Alternately, in the disengaged position, the retainer allows the head stack assembly to move away from the outer diameter stop. The latch prevents the head stack assembly from bouncing off of the outer diameter stop during an unloading sequence.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1999Date of Patent: April 30, 2002Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventors: Brian Strom, Zia Zahiri

Patent number: 6297928Abstract: A mounting assembly for securing a disk drive to a frame of a computer is provided herein. The mounting assembly includes three rigid mounts and a single flexible mount. Each rigid mount rigidly secures the drive housing to the frame and prevents degradation of performance of the disk drive. The flexible mount diminishes the level of vibration transferred from the frame to drive housing. Further, the flexible mount facilitates flexing of the drive housing intermediate the flexible mount and the rigid mounts. This reduces the effects of a shock pulse to the disk drive and inhibits head slap between a transducer head and a storage disk.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1998Date of Patent: October 2, 2001Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventors: Peter Hahn, Arthur Lin, Shin John Choi, Rodney Ngai

Patent number: 6142544Abstract: A ball retrieval and storage device for retrieving balls of at least two different sizes comprising a wheeled container with rotatably attached handles attached thereto. The container is rollingly supported by two wheels on an axle, and includes a removable rack which when in place covers the container to ensure the contents remain within the container. When the removable rack is placed beneath the container, the entire device is elevated to prevent needless bending and stooping by the user. The device further comprises a retrieval opening which includes a fixed member and a movable member to provide a variable spacing between them depending on the size ball to be retrieved. The device is placed near a ball to be retrieved, tilted backward onto its wheels, rolled forward such that the ball is beneath the opening, then returned to its upright position in order to capture a ball.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1999Date of Patent: November 7, 2000Inventors: Joseph Benzoni, William Bishop
